Bringing back the memories. I didnt realise how lucky I was. Built a Sand Scorcher and Ford Ranger. Both in the loft. Wanted a Super Champ. How ungrateful 😂 Parents bought me the body which we modified to go over the console box. How quickly we all moved onto the Hornet and everyone thought these VW based dune buggy cars were old hat. They look as glorious now as they did when I was 12. Great channel. Keep it up.
SWB 912 It’s really bizarre that your comment came through when it did my friend! I was actually just thinking the very same thing. I classed these as old bits of junk when I had my Thundershot 😂👊🏻 Thanks for watching
Had one in 79. Love it. The guys at the track started running the hornet but they were so light i was able to out handle them for a bit. Awesome machine for sure.
I was the opposite. Saw the Rough Rider new when I was ten and thought it was awesome. In 1985 when I was old enough to buy my first real rc car I was sadly disappointed with all the plastic junk that had become standard
The Frog, and Hornet and the Grasshopper were all released when I was a kid - I used to look in the window of the model shop in Bolton, Lancs, watching the promotional video on a loop. Nothing else gave that feeling of excitement that that era of cars gave me as a 10-15 year old. The glossy brochure, the big boxes on the shelves of the shop! I hope kids these days experience that excitement in the same way. Years later I bought the mini version of the hornet and my kids love it!
God I had them all! Built a plywood box to carry it and it’s tools out for some mud pluggin’ up the bings!I had an incomplete rough rider, but back then it was a nightmare to get parts so I threw it out…. Sad😢
My brother and I went together and bought the Rough Rider back in 79. We had so much fun building it. I did the mechanical stuff and my brother did the the painting. Very fond memories.
Oh god, I'm so excited to see this! Almost as excited as the first time, back in the day, when my dad got one and we built it. I can't believe how many of those parts and shapes are just burnt into my memory... I'm going to love this build! Awesome stuff.

Thank you as allways for your great videos🙏 Last weekend I has finished my own Buggy Champ! I has painted him in Tamiya's "racing green" with yellow/silver lights, yellow drivers helmed and what can I say...this is an absolutly beauty car🙏😊. This is my third kit ( I have one TT02B and a TT02 onroad) and the testdrive last sunday was an epiphany! I think you can feel the weight an heavyness of this car during you drive it. I am absolutly in love with my Buggy Champ and I'm very excited to see your work at this beauty 🙂
What a model! All these metal parts are incredible! Thanks Glenn for making me discover this magnificent buggy. I will follow the assembly and the first run carefully! Thanks again and take care.
The Rough Rider is such an iconic model. I had the original kit in the early 80's and still have it tucked away in the original Beatties bag. So many memories invested in that car that I couldn't imagine ever selling it. Wonderful to drive too. Look forward to the build video Glenn. And as always, thank you for taking the time to make these videos.
Great video! I have a Ford Ranger from the early 80s , it was my first introduction to Tamiya rc and it is still my favorite. Now after seeing this, my next project has got to be a Rough Rider. Looking forward to future videos.
Really well done Glen getting this one!!!. I know there are the little detail changes. However this has opened up my memories of back in the day. I know I go on but at our age this is where it all started. Just love the old boxing style!!!! Brilliant👍👍👍👍.
Never built or ran a SRB of any description. Little while ago bought a rere Sand Scorcher pulled it a part to restore. And that's as far as I got, personal and work commitments keep getting in the way of me starting the restoration. So long answer short Sand Scorcher is my favourite. Thanks for another great video Glenn 👍
Just finished mine and couldn't resist some hop ups. Alu chassis, Alu front and rear bars.... Weighs even more now! Love it! Went with the blue also and with MCI original decals.
So many metal parts! My first kit was the Falcon in '86 or '87? Was all plastic, but loved that car, lasted a long time for me.. Thanks for this video!
My first hobby grade RC car! I saw it in a magazine at the elementary school library, I think it was 1982 or 1983! I was 12 or 13 and didn’t know this level of rc car existed. Low and behold, it showed up in that year’s Sears Christmas catalog! It was the only thing I wanted so being an only child, I got it. I spent the rest of Christmas putting it together. Its one of my most favorite kits from Tamiya. I like the sound it makes when it runs. Its a different sound than plastic rc cars. I wish I never build it, so I could build it for first time again. So Glenn, enjoy your build.
This brings back such great memories! Thank you. I know you will do it justice on the build, I can't wait. The original speed control was a servo driven thing that didn't work very well, and yes it weighed a ton...lol
This was my first Tamiya Rc car in 1984 , I used to get a bus up to the local Taylor & mcKanna toy shop just to watch the Tamiya videos, I remember wanting it for so long, then eventually my dad brought me one for my birthday complete with Acoms radio gear, for a £150, I also loved the superchamp but that was about another £50. it was great for a year then my mate got a grasshopper which was so much lighter & quicker despite only having a 360 motor, we joined a racing club, the rough rider couldn't compete with the kyosho tomahawks & hirobo Zerda, so i sold it & brought a Tamiya Fox.then a Boomerang. Despite it being heavy & slow, there was something about all that cast metal that made it more real. i'm now 48 but i think i need to go & buy this again.

You just can’t beat Tamiya packaging to make you smile it’s an instant lift and brings back so many happy memories of childhood in the 70”s 80”s building them with my Dad. Back in the day as a 14 year old my first Tamiya rc kit was a Lamborghini Cheetah which looked great and ran ok but didn’t have the best suspension in the world the plastic torsion bars were always snapping. Anyway in my later years I’ve built a re release XR311 and a Sandscorcher. Still got a couple of Cheetahs including my original Christmas 79 present still works with the original rc set up plus upgrades to the suspension using the XR3 11 set up metal torsion bars. Wished Tamiya would re release the cheetah but not much chance now considering how long it’s cousin the XR3 11 has been out again.
Nice video. Brings back memories. One thing the original didn't have are the ball-bearings. It came with brass bearings that after a while would wear out and make the front wheels wobble. Despite that, was a such a nice buggy.
As for which was my favourite... I loved the paint and those rear tyres on the Sand Scorcher, and loved the body, wheels and tyres on the Ranger, and liked the Rough Rider the least! My mate had the Ranger in blue and white and it was amazing. Thing is, now nostalgia's got me I really dig the Rough Rider, and even though I think it looks better in the colours you're doing, I'd still have to do red if it were me, just because mine was red all those years ago! Doesn't make much sense, but there you go...
Yes Glen could'nt agree more about the Ford Ranger :-( seriously sometimes we can never understand there logic, but look Favorite would have to be the Sand scorcher for sure for me,then this beast as i just got one too but look Ford Ranger Would also be so Nice to have in the collection, cheers glen for another great Video :-)
Shit hot content as usual. I've started getting into RC again as I've bought the Schumacher CAT XLS Masami and a Yokomo Drift chassis. However, all these Tamiya models are good to see as I used to own several of them years ago!
@@TAMIYALegends My pleassure buddy, it's so refreshing to see someone who takes genuine pride and joy in this hobby. Once I've completed my current builds, I might even get into Tamiya buggies such as the Egress and Avante...such legendary machines. Keep up the good work pal. I'm also twisting my girlfriend's arm into RC builds, we both watch your videos.
This is what new buggies are missing, style, sexy looks. I just wish Tamiya re-re's didn't use the same hard plastic chassis. Imagine the grasshopper tub pliable, especially the shock towers.
Beautiful kit, but my all time fave is the Scorcher. Had the original as a kid and have a re re that needs building. These cars will always be my fave partly nostalgia mostly they are stunning in every sense. Had many Tamiya’s as a kid, but the Sand Scorcher and original Rover will always be my number one!
As I recall, the 1979 original had an absolutely 100% waterproof mechanism box (Tamiya provided 'silicon sealant' with the kit to achieve this. Also applied to the Sand Scorcher & Ford Ranger) and the results were incredible. I could literally drive my Sand Scorcher through shallow streams and puddles which fully submerged the vehicle back in another lifetime in 1983. No moisture penetrated or damaged the servos and receiver. The switch had a rubber cover also to consolidate the protection. Sadly with this version, it's not possible with the ESC wiring that needs to run through the bottom of the box to the motor casing. Perhaps with modern waterproof servos and receivers avaiable today this is academic anyway, but it was a highly impressive capability for a 'toy' ('Toys they're not:)) all those years ago! Can't wait to see her finished.
Richard Gere Excellent information Richard, now you’ve said this it make sense that all the promo videos we’re flying through water. Thanks for watching buddy 👊🏻
I recently built my own buggy champ. Be make sure to use plenty of threadlock on the front trailing arms. I used the kit supplied threadlock sparingly and I should have used much more.
When these were released back in 1979 they were prohibitively expensive. Every kid wanted one but I'd say only 1 in 100 actually had their parents come through for them. It's not until the Hornet and Grasshopper were released that kids really had a shot at owning these types of cars. From then on it became very popular.
Rob Quinton Oh Rob I must be mistaken buddy, I thought all the original SRB’s had the khaki colour bumper 🤷🏼♂️. Apologies if I got that wrong 😬 Thanks for watching 👊🏻
thanks for your views and education on this great hobby- got a Buggy Champ Silver edition- Would you have an opinion on keeping the Silver shell in this particular kit original- or would you paint this shell as if it was just another shell?
I had the massive decision to make in 1982 which SRB to have for Christmas and chose the F150 Ford Ranger XLT, but nearly went for the Rough Rider. The Ford Ranger is my favourite also and just about to buy the rerelease "Buggy Champ" 🤔😊 .I wonder why they don't rere the F150?
My dad's neighbour had one when I was about ten and he let me drive it. My vague memory was that it was quite bouncy and I rolled it almost immediately and felt terrible lol
Ford Ranger! If you paint the wheels try and go for a chrome look paint finish ? I bought one of these in bits circa 1992 and can’t for the life of me remember what happened with it..... time to roll my sleeves up and get rummaging in my parents loft I think 🤔
Edward White Excellent 🤩. I’m so jealous of people who have Tamiya goodness in the loft, just waiting to be rediscovered 😍 Thanks for watching Edward 👊🏻
I bought this kit as a re-introduction to RC cars since my teens. Be interested to see how you mount your front wheel servo as mine moves around and turning radius is really poor. Please keep us updated. Thanks, Peter,
Peter Green That’s a great point Pete, a lot of guys mount the servo right at the front in the small section, apparently it’s vastly improves the steering 🤷🏼♂️ Thanks for watching buddy 👊🏻
Had one of these when they originally came out, bought another one about 2 years ago,(silver edition) built it,used it once to set up steering, been in a cupboard ever since, such a shame ,never going to use it,due to bad health 😩
Hi. I don't know if my previous comment got put in the spam bin because I added a link to another video. Basically I was pointing to a Sand Scorcher video by Matteo called Sand Scorcher in Extreme Off Road Action and at the very end he has a Rough Rider that rolls over and smashes the roof and lights up. It demonstrates the problem of a car that is as heavy as a brick with a flimsy plastic roof. Does look smashing but the Sand Scorcher is better at withstanding a crash. Not much mind !
Pete Wylie RC Videos Hey Pete, No sorry your original message didn’t come through 😬 Yes I’ve watched his awesome video, as you say there not bashers 😂 Thanks for watching 👊🏻
Sand Scorcher wins hands down for me! But I do love the Rough Rider, a friend at school had one when they first come out, a year or so later I got a frog for Christmas (1981 maybe?) I have and original SS body now still looking for an original chassis. I love all your builds and loved the tyres on the Falcon but please don’t put yellow on the RR tyres, need to be white so as not to clash with body ( unless of course you want to paint it yellow and white 😁) merry Christmas! - Pete.
I find it APPALLING that some now defunct Racing Team wants Licensing!!! 😡😠😖 STILL a nice Bugga! Even the classic blister packaging inside. 😎😊 Another one I could never afford, but wish I could have... Happy Christmas🎄🎅 Carmine ✈🚂🚙
I like them all but if I really had to pickit would be the other buggy that they made similar to the one you have but with the monoshock with the oil reservoir for it. And you should start a petition for Tamiya to bring back every car they ever made.
Those fronts look like they’d go well for scale look on a Fenix Classique F1 kit... if they’re the right diameter. Handling would be worse for it, I’m sure.
This was my least favourite model to look at of the SRB chassis, preferred the f150 ranger . I never owned an SRB ,my first TAMIYA was the a Mitsubishi Pajaro in 1984, After that one I had most of the top models I went racing with them . My God those were the days .😊
lyndon webber I actually bought it in a job lot, got the Wild One and Sand Scorcher with it. So I actually got it much cheaper than to buy it individually 😎. But there selling on eBay up around £300+ 😬 Thanks for watching Lyndon
I think for me it has to be the super champ/fighting buggy is the favourite👍 if your going to run it a ball diff is essential the tamiya ball diff is as rare as hens teeth but I do believe tamiya is bringing out a 2nd version diff because the original one apparently had a habit of disassembling its self?🤷♂️
Bringing back the memories. I didnt realise how lucky I was. Built a Sand Scorcher and Ford Ranger. Both in the loft. Wanted a Super Champ.

Excellent 🤩
Thanks for watching buddy 👊🏻
My first RC car was a Rough Rider back in the early 80’s....definitely need to get a re-release !
This was my first rc. Loved the waterproofing.

Thanks for watching 👊🏻

Excellent information Richard, now you’ve said this it make sense that all the promo videos we’re flying through water.
Thanks for watching buddy 👊🏻
Great vid. Mines the super champ👍

Thanks for watching my friend 👊🏻
Thanks Glenn👏
Hi Glenn, the cam locks are similar to dzsus fittings used in motor racing and lots of other things to hold panels on etc. Steve MCR UK.
Stephen Stott
Steve your a fountain of knowledge on the details, I really appreciated your support and feedback my friend 🤩👊🏻
I recently built my own buggy champ. Be make sure to use plenty of threadlock on the front trailing arms. I used the kit supplied threadlock sparingly and I should have used much more.
colter james Calvetti
Lol 😂 I know exactly what you mean buddy, I’ve never used as much on one car.
Thanks for watching 😊👊🏻
When these were released back in 1979 they were prohibitively expensive. Every kid wanted one but I'd say only 1 in 100 actually had their parents come through for them. It's not until the Hornet and Grasshopper were released that kids really had a shot at owning these types of cars. From then on it became very popular.

my original tamiya rough rider has the black bumper like the picture on the manual, did it come in the other color too?
Rob Quinton
Oh Rob I must be mistaken buddy, I thought all the original SRB’s had the khaki colour bumper 🤷🏼♂️. Apologies if I got that wrong 😬
Thanks for watching 👊🏻
@@TAMIYALegends there was only 2 that came in that color the super champ and ford ranger..
Rob Quinton
Just google’d it Rob, your spot on buddy. Well I’ve learned something new today 🤓
thanks for your views and education on this great hobby- got a Buggy Champ Silver edition- Would you have an opinion on keeping the Silver shell in this particular kit original- or would you paint this shell as if it was just another shell?
I had the massive decision to make in 1982 which SRB to have for Christmas and chose the F150 Ford Ranger XLT, but nearly went for the Rough Rider. The Ford Ranger is my favourite also and just about to buy the rerelease "Buggy Champ" 🤔😊 .I wonder why they don't rere the F150?
The Man With No Name
Yes it’s the Ranger hands down for me buddy 🤩
Thanks for watching 👊🏻
My dad's neighbour had one when I was about ten and he let me drive it. My vague memory was that it was quite bouncy and I rolled it almost immediately and felt terrible lol
I had one but cant remember from way back then which one it was. Looked similar to maybe the Hornet
gavjack2004
Cool 😎
Thanks for watching buddy 👊🏻
Ford Ranger! If you paint the wheels try and go for a chrome look paint finish ? I bought one of these in bits circa 1992 and can’t for the life of me remember what happened with it..... time to roll my sleeves up and get rummaging in my parents loft I think 🤔
Edward White
Excellent 🤩. I’m so jealous of people who have Tamiya goodness in the loft, just waiting to be rediscovered 😍
Thanks for watching Edward 👊🏻
I bought this kit as a re-introduction to RC cars since my teens. Be interested to see how you mount your front wheel servo as mine moves around and turning radius is really poor. Please keep us updated. Thanks, Peter,
Peter Green
That’s a great point Pete, a lot of guys mount the servo right at the front in the small section, apparently it’s vastly improves the steering 🤷🏼♂️
Thanks for watching buddy 👊🏻
Gauranga Glen Ji! ❤
Had one of these when they originally came out, bought another one about 2 years ago,(silver edition) built it,used it once to set up steering, been in a cupboard ever since, such a shame ,never going to use it,due to bad health 😩
Shiddy123
Oh that’s a shame buddy 😞
I hope things pick up for you 👊🏻
Thanks for watching
Oh, think that was the torsion bar you were looking at...
RC Crawlers Mid-Wales
Yes it was buddy, I get many brain farts while I’m on camera 😂👊🏻
Cool, I had the Sandscorcher orig.. I can't remember if it had a diff.. It must of done right?
Pete Wylie RC Videos
Hey Pete,
No sorry your original message didn’t come through 😬
Yes I’ve watched his awesome video, as you say there not bashers 😂
Thanks for watching 👊🏻
Sand Scorcher wins hands down for me! But I do love the Rough Rider, a friend at school had one when they first come out, a year or so later I got a frog for Christmas (1981 maybe?) I have and original SS body now still looking for an original chassis. I love all your builds and loved the tyres on the Falcon but please don’t put yellow on the RR tyres, need to be white so as not to clash with body ( unless of course you want to paint it yellow and white 😁) merry Christmas! - Pete.
Thanks Pete😊
Hope you have a great Christmas too my friend 🥳👊🏻
I love this chassis. It's so old but so fun to drive. (I have the SS re-re)
Are you going to cut this box and hang it on the wall behind you ?
aviano72
I am my friend, I now have this, Sand Scorcher, Wild One and Egress to cut up 😬😬😬
Thanks for watching buddy 👊🏻
So what are the differences between the beetle and this?
what type of battery do you use for the buggy champ? the foam space is very small.
any chance you think we will see a re-release of the original Toyota Hi-Lux 4x4
Not sure how you can say there isn't much to build, surely it is the same or more than most other kits??
i want to get some alloy wheel rims for mine, Anyone got any links to them?
jsa2001
I don’t have the links, but there’s a few on eBay at various prices.
Thanks for watching buddy 👊🏻
I find it APPALLING that some now defunct Racing Team wants Licensing!!! 😡😠😖
STILL a nice Bugga! Even the classic blister packaging inside. 😎😊
Another one I could never afford, but wish I could have...
Happy Christmas🎄🎅

Excellent John 🤩

I like them all but if I really had to pickit would be the other buggy that they made similar to the one you have but with the monoshock with the oil reservoir for it. And you should start a petition for Tamiya to bring back every car they ever made.
Brad Kalman
Oh yes the Super Champ 🤩🤩🤩
Could you get the original stickers for it ?
David Turner
Yeah but the originals cost too much, although re production would do the job from MCI I guess 🤔
Thanks for watching David 👊🏻
doesn't srb stand for sealed racing buggy??????
chloe devereaux
No definitely special 👊🏻
I did just double check on google 😂👊🏻
@@TAMIYALegends sounds kinda romantic tho........ :)
Is that the same chassis a the sand scorcher?
Ron Bernard
Yes it is Ron 🤩
Thanks for watching buddy 👊🏻
I want 1
I really wish that they kept the reservoir rear shock set up
El Diablo
I might be wrong but I don’t think it was ever on this car, it was on the Super Champ 😊👊🏻
Thanks for watching
Those fronts look like they’d go well for scale look on a Fenix Classique F1 kit... if they’re the right diameter. Handling would be worse for it, I’m sure.
Adam Douglas
Hmmm 🤔 interesting Adam, I’ll have to google that one 😂
Thanks for watching buddy 👊🏻
Has to be the ranger, my best mate had one.i had the brat , but always wanted a ranger.

Yes it’s definitely on my list for 2020 🤞🏻

My favourite was the baja beetle
This was my least favourite model to look at of the SRB chassis, preferred the f150 ranger .
I never owned an SRB ,my first TAMIYA was the a Mitsubishi Pajaro in 1984,
After that one I had most of the top models I went racing with them .
My God those were the days .😊

My God those were the days 😍
Love that my friend and I totally agree 👊🏻

ranger!!! or srb with brat hardbody?
Andy Smith
Hmmm 🤔 don’t think I’ve seen a SRB with a Brat shell, sounds pretty sweet though Andy 👊🏻
Thanks for watching buddy
What did u give for it ? If u don’t mind me asking
lyndon webber
I actually bought it in a job lot, got the Wild One and Sand Scorcher with it. So I actually got it much cheaper than to buy it individually 😎. But there selling on eBay up around £300+ 😬
Thanks for watching Lyndon
I think for me it has to be the super champ/fighting buggy is the favourite👍 if your going to run it a ball diff is essential the tamiya ball diff is as rare as hens teeth but I do believe tamiya is bringing out a 2nd version diff because the original one apparently had a habit of disassembling its self?🤷♂️
Phil Moffett
Thanks Phil, yes I’ve heard that too, let’s hope it’s priced well 🤞🏻
