The Smiths perform "Handsome Devil" live at The Hacienda, Manchester on the 4th February 1983. Lyrics:
All the streets are crammed with things
Eager to be held
I know what hands are for
And I'd like to help myself
You ask me the time
But I sense something more
And I would like to give
What I think you're asking for
You handsome devil
Oh, you handsome devil
Let me get my hands
On your mammary glands
And let me get your head
On the conjugal bed
I say, I say, I say
I crack the whip
And you skip
But you deserve it
You deserve it, deserve it, deserve it
A boy in the bush
Is worth two in the hand
I think I can help you get through your exams
Oh, you handsome devil
Oh, let me get my hands
On your mammary glands
And let me get your head
On the conjugal bed
I say, I say, I say
I crack the whip
And you skip
But you deserve it
You deserve it, deserve it, deserve it
And when we're in your scholarly room
Who will swallow whom ?
When we're in your scholarly room
Who will swallow whom ?
You handsome devil
Oh, let me get my hands
On your mammary glands
And let me get your head
On the conjugal bed
I say, I say, I say
There's more to life than books, you know
But not much more
Oh, there's more to life than books, you know
But not much more, not much more
Oh, you handsome devil
Oh, you handsome devil
Ow
"I repeat. The only thing to be in 1983 is handsome, HANDSOME DEVIL!" Great sound!!
That Bass Though! Andy Rourke is so underrated.
Karl_Winters agreed
+Karl_Winters I agree
So is this song
Karl_Winters Rourke is badass here! He really helped make their sound, it wasn't just Moz and Marr though it is hard to stand out hanging with talent like that. What a band.
Marr and Rourke used to play guitar together when they were kids and Marr said he was REALLY talented. I read it from his recent autobiography and I don't remember exactly what he said but I've got the impression that Rourke was almost as good as Marr back then. So no wonder he's fucking great on bass too!
That bass tone, absolute perfection
RIP to the goat 🐐 Andy
@@bopshithe best British bassist of his time. Made John deacon almost look amateur.
Johnny Marr looks so badass and happy, truly a one of a kind guitarist!
Johnny smiling away because he's exactly where he wants to be.
Too bad he got complacent and took
for granted the amazingness he was a part of.
This is probably the coolest thing I've ever seen
fuckin right ^
agrreeeeeed
Couldn't have said it better Shana! : )
Ya wanna get married?
Rip Andy what a bass player😢
I don't know who did the mastering but it sounds good as heaven. And my god, what an incredible band and song. This is probably one of the best performances I've ever seen. And they're only 3. (as a guitarist myself I can tell Marr is god, by the way.)
When those drums kicked in, it sounded overdubbed 😍
@@fuckamericanidiot It got massaged quite a bit. It's the recording that ended up on the b-side to Hand in Glove. So much better than the BBC session.
I LIKE THAT THIS DOESNT SOUND LIKE IT WAS RECORDED IN A CBGBS BATHROOM
nojh, jnljkvg hgdk6uv funniest comment I've seen in a long time
Morrissey, Marr, Rourke, and Joyce made great music together for a short period of time. The Smiths will live on forever.
This is amazing! The rhythm section is VASTLY underrated but Morrissey and Marr are unstoppable too. What's not to love here? It's absolutely brilliant.
Never knew how great this song is, I’ve been listening to it non-stop lately and I adore it. I think this live version packs more of a punch than the studio version.
IMO this is better than the studio version. The lyrics of this song helped me come out in the 80's. For that I'll always be thankful.
John is nineteen here. Fuckin unbeliavable
I heard The Smiths instruments separated on a sound board once.
Very nice. Rourke and Joyce were tight!!!
With questions about where did The Fall or Joy Division come from, still fresh in our adolescent minds, The Smiths emerged almost fully fledged and perfected with this and "Hand in Glove" - and they were probably the biggest enigma of the early '80s. What was in the water in Manchester at this time?
Lying in bed ,it's 12pm, tears streaming down my face because I've had my heart broken again and morrisey is my only comfort.
never have i related to a comment more
Same I’m going through some crap myself rn... on my birthday; I guess you can say I’m having an unhappy birthday ;)
I hope your heart is getting treated well!
me
that's embarrassing I'm afraid
This is my favorite version of this song, I actually heard this before Hatful of Hollow and didn't realize it was a live version that is how good this version of this song is...
Amazing this is from their third show. (Rourke's second) Already a force.
Of course it is .it's the smiths. Finest band to ever exist.

Brilliant. Amazing riffs and funny lyrics. That's what I loved about the Smiths. This song is like a "Carry on" movie. Ooooh Matron!
This riff is some not of this earth!!
This is one of the most awesome smith’s videos I’ve seen! Love it!
johnny marr brilliant
35 years ago wow! Great song one of my favourites 👌🏻🤩
40 years ago wow! Great song one of my favorites 👌😍
There's more to life than books you know but not much more
you can tell morrissey was influenced by post punk due to his fashion and took it further creating what we know as indie rock..i love moz more than the smiths but this is a damn good song.
the indie rock sound invention is ENTIRELY johnny marr, he wrote the tunes' guitar parts before any other instrument and gave them to morrissey in cassettes to sit with and sing over them... not to discredit his great vocals though...
@@davidrosie4995 absolutely
Precious! I love this song! Thanks a lot!
This was the song that introduced me to The Smiths as a teen & now in my 30s I still love it. The guitar riff is sublime
*mind blown*
Damn that bass.

Andy rourkes bass playing is second to none

Look at how happy John looks - living his dream. But dreams don't always last, eh
This is the remaster from "The sound of the Smiths" I'm fairly sure, since it included a remaster of this song from this show, same date.

Yes! The technology was extremely limited unless you worked for the BBC or ITV...
Why the fuck does every human alive right now not like this band?

Morrissey gets so lost in the music. It's very romantic.
I miss Morrissey and Marr together.

That's the strangest comment I've ever read!
yo.....
Most bizarre lyrics I ever heard... After Rammstein
Naahh.. The lyrics tells about the attraction that a former teacher Steven had for him. Pretty simple lyrics.
Johny maar ,better than Sex
Great music with some guy waffling on....= The Smiths.
It's not scholarly room, it's scullery which was an old fashioned name for kitchen
The song's about a teacher-student relation though.
Titantr0n female teacher with a male student ?
@@frankpastrana602 Morrisey's crush on a male teacher.
