I like your idea of doubling the use of your foam pad as a groundsheet rather than using something like polycro, which has no other purpose.....unless one likes sitting on rocks without padding. :-) What are the dimensions and weight of your 3mm pad? I'm like you, I went back and forth comparing the Altaplex and Pro 1. I really like the idea of having the extra floorspace for my pack in the Altaplex, but I really hate the half moon zipper and the door hooks on my old Duplex. I'll just have to get used to having my pack outside. If only there was a Pro 1.5. Who knows, I may decide to get the Pro 2 eventually. It's hard to give up all that extra space. I went the opposite way with my tent sack. I'm using an extra large 17 gram sack so I don't have to struggle with stuffing the tent every morning. I just lay the tent flat in the sack and then lay the sack flat on top of my pack liner. I'm hoping that will help with the longevity of the DCF. I never developed pin holes from repeated folding/rolling/stuffing like some people have with DCF, but my Duplex did get dull looking after a while, which made me worry about the longevity.

Hey! Thanks! Yes I recently found another UA-cam video from a guy who I think was maybe South African? But he was 6.3 and also settled on the durston as the better option. My 3 mm pad is about 50 by 150 cm. What I would love with the durston is if they just blocked out one door in tylie and continued the floor to that wall- kind of like the Altaplex, but then of course they would have to work out some way to put the second hiking pole in...🤔

@@Greghikes1 I talked to Dan about this. You could still leave the wider-shorter section of the vestibule for an outside door for the pole and small vestibule, and have the longer-narrower section of the vestibule become interior floor space, but the problem comes with engineering the floor to be the shape of a "4" instead of a simple parallelogram. I guess it's doable. We just have to get enough of us to bug Dan enough to do it. LOL

@@spuriouseffect yep, I also asked him about it, if there were a more zpacks style floor without the struts in the corners and preferably dcf it might be easier to achieve .. I'm sure more will develop in the coming years. 😊

Thanks for the review, and insight. I just purchased the X-Mid Pro 1 due thoughts of camp site selection having a smaller footprint. As you mention I coming from the Z packs Duplex which is roomy but has a larger footprint. And made for some areas of camping a bit difficult. Again thanks for the thoughts on the tent…l hope I enjoy it 🤙🏽 on a different note I’m also looking at the Hoka Mafata Speed 4, for my next ultra, currently have the tecton x but lugs are a bit small depending on the terrain of the race.

Oh nice! I love both those shoes, Mafate definitely grippier & more plush but more vague, I find the tecton X more technical and precise though but less grip. I use it when trail running/scrambling more on dry rock.
Good luck with your tent! 🤞
I'm toying with how I might extend the floor to fill one vestibule...🤔

@@Greghikes1 As you mention I enjoy having my pack with me in the tent, so putting it the vestibule will a bit different. I imagine I’ll zip one shut and place the pack in their. Some what like begging the tent I guess. I’ve heard such great reviews, on the tent and always purchase a 2 person tent I thought I would give it a try for a 1 person and might have luck with camp site selection. Sounds like I’ll also invest in the Mafata speed, as my next race is 66km with a lot of vert. The additional grip would be welcoming and as you mentioned the plush under foot is a bonus. Take care and have a great weekend as it approaches.

A thought about the custom sack is that it appears to be slightly smaller than the factory one. I have an Altaplex tent that I have used relatively few, about 20 times. I always took good care of it, except for when I was on a one-week bicycle trip and compressed it quite a bit in my bike bag for the week, more than the original tent bag would have allowed. Since then, it has developed several (around 10-15 in one group) micro holes. The tent wasn't subjected to any serious strain or stress, meaning that I didn't overstretch it, didn't face any major storms, and it was exposed to a very gentle use. The holes definitely didn't come from mechanical injuries. it comes some kind of material tiredness. On top of that, it is made from thicker dyneema the Spruce Green.

Hmm that's interesting, the sack it's in now is just one I had already, it fits quite easily, but maybe I'll go a larger one! Just in case. Cheers!
