The Overland track Tasmania Feb 2023!
Very nice.
Great hack but the tip has to be clean otherwide it would reduce the longevity of the pole. Also wouldnt the excess stress in the winds break the pole?
@@hologos_ yeah hard to say, I would probably put some leukotape around the pole tip to pad where it contacts the carbon. Also I think if you have the guy lines firm enough the downforce should negate all but very high wind force. It's essentially replacing the piece of carbon tube extension you'd purchase from zpacks which would have the same stress issues anyway.
I am completely offended that you think I have a mental age of 16 years old <makes fart noise>

I am finally starting to watch these videos Greg! Great memories!
@@okidokiyogi1 yay! Yeah good type 2 fun memories hey 😄🥳
It was so great seeing your adventure! Thanks for sharing!
@@sarahester8524 thanks for watching! You're one of the few😅 Anita hasn't even watched them all yet! 🙄
Gorgeous mountain range, such a lovely video my friend!
I thought Myron was eating out of a bag of dog food there for a minute.
Good luck, have fun. Cheers from Yukon
Thanks! 😃
Looking forward to following along! This brings back many memories Greg. :)
Wow what an amazing adventure! I love following along on your journey! It is so beautiful there!!
Have a great time😊 Ive been thinking about going hiking so maybe one day!
It's such a wonderful surprise to get to see a video of your first day! Thank you for making this ❤
I’m so excited to follow along on your adventures!
Great video. I have the originally Duplex. What a great tent. New follower here. Crow✌️
I’m so excited for you! 🎉
👍👍
So for my understanding the only change of this tent is floor. Is it also less strong?
Overall width is narrow than a duplex too. Check out the zpacks site for comparison👍
How much does it weigh in American? LOL
😂 yeah I figure the 2% of the world that still uses imperial can Google it 😁
Hi Greg, I'm in the same boat as you. I used a Zpack Duplex in heavier Spruce Green in 2019 (110 days on PCT) and then the X-Mid Pro 2 (woven) in 2023. Love the DD access and fly screen design but I damaged the zips after 50 days on trail and had to get them repaired under warranty. I also found the XMid had way more condensation than the Duplex, I think because it feels like it has more material and I didn't like the Sil Nylon floor although that option has now been addressed in their latest version. I also found it took longer to dry than the Duplex. Like you, I am considering going back to the Duplex without zips, possibly the Classic with the heavier spruce green Dyneema walls, 1oz Dyneema floor, and 2mm guy lines because this is what worked well for me in the past. But I did get used to the less opaque 0.55oz Dyneema walls on the DD, and if the 1.3mm Zpack guy lines hold well enough, I'd be shedding an extra 200g in weight from roughly 633g to 423g if I go with the Lite. That's possibly worth it if I take care of the floor. I do have a one-person Zpack tent's Dyneema ground sheet that I could use to give the floor added protection which weighs hardly anything. Decisions, Decisions, Decisions! Thanks for the great video.
Aww thanks Katrina! Yeah I also noticed the extra condensation in the Durston. Even with the vents open I've never had so much condensation. As you saw I use a 3mm foam sheet as a sit pad etc & am hoping using that under the tent (as I got into the habit of doing with the X-Mid) will protect the duplex lite enough, plus I try to be careful with my pitches anyway. You could always get a regular duplex with the regular thickness floor but lighter fly, they're around 530g? I might even sell the duplex lite after the GDT this year if I'm not in love with it. Ahh fun first world problems hey! 😂 Good luck! Any big hikes coming up you're wanting it for?
@@Greghikes1 yes, first-world problems but whatever rocks your boat, and I love talking gear. I'm doing Larapinta this year and was going to take a Big Agnes Copper Spur UL 1 but I find it really difficult to unzip the fly and get out of the tent and I get saturated if the fly is wet. The Big Agnes free standing tent is very cosy inside and relatively easy to pitch but I miss the second vestibule, I like cooking in my vestibule and am not sure with the stretchiness of nylon if it will give me a safe enough area in which to cook and it's heavier with more parts than the Duplex. I really don't want to carry tent poles which I see as a weak point. I have simply been spoilt with the Duplex. If you break your trekking poles, which I use rather than carry, which could add more weight, I simply make do with a stick until I can get a replacement pole. Like Darwin On the Trail says, adding more poles like the new Offset model is just introducing more fail points. I plan to return to the US maybe next year so maybe you're right. Get the Classic version in the lighter fly material. I found the Classic's bathtub floor impenetrable, with care taken when pitching with all noticeable potential puncture sticks and rocks removed. I sold it for a reasonable price with no holes in the floor after 150 nights on trail but the 0.75oz roof material had fine pin holes in it along the ridge line mainly. I believe the ground for Larapinta is very hard so staking will be a challenge but because Zpack supplies good-length guy lines, unlike the DDs, I think I can manage the big rock, little rock method if necessary for a tight pitch. And I like the fact I don't have to spend 20 mins before camp trying to work out in my head the maths for how to orient the Durston tent for optimum flat sleep orientation versus optimal wind minimisation from vestibule entry points with its unique design. I'll wear the slightly more difficult entry point with the trekking pole in the middle of the doorway for a more stress-free pitch. Thanks for your feedback.
@@katrinahemingway721 oh are you based in Australia too? Where abouts? I looked heavily into Larapinta just as a fun training hike but the flights were a little too much at the time and I'll be away this winter which I understand is the time to do it! Yes I love talking gear as well 🤗 Are you wanting the regular duplex for the extra width for two people? One of the main benefits I saw with getting the lite duplex was the narrower width, So at a push I could use it as a two-person But mostly it will be a one person, And I felt better about the compromise in floor size for a one person backcountry tent, As I think it's only 4" wider than an altaplex.. The two Canadians I am hiking the GDT with were a bit concerned about its footprint size but as you correctly point out it's much more versatile to pitch a duplex or even a triplex (than a Durston) . I had some pretty creative pitches on the PCT with a three-person tent! 😂Esp in the 🌵🌵. When are you thinking of doing the laripinta? What month? & Over how many days? I was looking at doing it over eight days, that would mean not needing for drops as well. (It doesn't look too tricky terrain-wise, but that also could be my PCT brain saying anything below 50 is fine 😂
@@Greghikes1 Yes Australian from Sydney and doing Larapinta this winter over 16 days with a few very inexperienced hikers so using LTTS for 3-4 food drops. I'm not worried about the width so much. I found the Duplex Classic a palace for 1 and loved having all my gear inside. So I guess I want durability as well but I may forgo the heavier weight roof surface from .75oz to .55oz for weight saving as you suggest but I'm not sure that 0.75oz floor will work as well. With all the duty and postage and tax Zpack is now charging to ship these tents to Australia there's not much change from A$1500. Do I want to pay that much for a Zpack Duplex Lite when I don't know how durable the 0.75oz Dyneema floor will be and will the 1.3mm guy lines work as well as the Duplex Classics more durable 2mm guy lines? I will definitely have to sell my DD X-mid Pro 2 to justify or maybe I just live with the DD now the failed zips have been replaced.
Congratulations on being the first person on UA-cam to review this tent! So what's the deal with the floor? The sides don't look very high. Is it just the way you have it pitched or what?
Thanks! Yeah it is only meant for 2 x20 inch pads , if you check out the follow-up video with just one pad you will see the much higher floors
Yeah basically just the way it is pitched, correct.
I was going to say, in the picture on the website it looks pretty high. I just couldn't find any specs. Thanks for the review!
Yeah, I have a 20-inch square and a 25-inch tapered. it's good to know I could make it work if I had to.
I'm getting good information!!
In case you haven't seen the previous video is a longer first review of the same tent ☺️
great video bud!
thanks😀
Amazing thank you!
Nice review Thank you!
Thanks! 😁
Thank you for this video! I'm interested in this tent, but worried that without the head guy line (maybe even with it?) I'd be too tall and too close from the DCF. I'm 190cm tall. A 10cm longer, narrower version would have been ideal I guess.
Yeh I'm 188, I think you'd be ok as if solo you could run a little diagonal, that's my plan. Though you can get a fair bit more room with the head and foot guy outs
@@Greghikes1 Hello Greg, what are your thoughts a good month later? Does your sleeping bag / quilt touch the mesh (head/toe) if on a thick pad?
@@TrekOfficiel hi, as long as you guy out (with a stick!) additional points at the head & foot it's fine. I'll try to film a little on the next trip in May, but using it as a solo tent & sleeping right down the middle seems best. (I usually sleep diagonal in the triplex when solo as there's 2 guy points per end) I think it'd struggle for enough length with 2 tall people though, as there's only 1 guy point at each end.
@@Greghikes1 Thank you! They should have done a Duplexl Lite and not discontinue the offset which I find flawed in design
Thanks for the review, we do use two 20" pads, on repacks website it seems that it's a tight fit but your video show two 25". So would you say that this duplex lite can fit two 20 comfortably ? If I get the duplex lite I would use it mostly as a 2p tent...
Oh definitely, it's designed for 2x20 pads. If you do a low pitch you might have room for a water bottle next to each pad but not much more.
@@Greghikes1 Nice, thanks for your answer. I'm just a bit concerned about the durability of the floor. Also the x-mid pro 2 with DCF floor would be cheaper (like $100 cheaper) here so I'm really not sure if the duplex lite is worth it...
Would’ve liked to see it with one pad. 😢
@@hikebot haha I know! I totally forgot. I'll maybe do another video
@@hikebotupdate video with just one pad coming in a couple of hours 😁
Sorry about the dodgy sound quality & low light at the end!
Hi there, what packs are you both using? Impressive base weight, would love a list of your equipment, minus food.
lighterpack.com/r/g1cb09 Was Basically this setup but with a zpacks triplex tent.
That's very impressive thanks for sharing.
@@benchambers1974 pleasure! It's pretty much the same stuff I took for the 4000km PCT in 2022. Definitely ultralight gear is the way to go! 😁
Absolutely, though until the last 12mths I've found it very hard to get hands on ultralight gear. Thankfully I've moved to Brisbane now and the wildearth at the airport is stocking some of the American cottage brands. I'm in the market for a new pack. Unfortunately the only ultralight one I can physically look at is the hyperlite southwest 2400 (wildearth have it in their Brisbane store). Would love to be able to take a recon trip to the states to try out all the others z packs Gossamer gear ULA etc.
@@benchambers1974 yeah it is unfortunate but I had to buy mine all sight unseen 🤔

What an awesome tent spot! And those clouds and sunrise/sunset! wow😮 great work bud!
Thanks! 💕 nothing like your videos but yours are inspiring me to make better ones🤞😊
Having the dog in the video is great 🤙🏽 great looking fella. Another great water proof jacket is Rab Phantom, the only draw back for me its 3/4 zip. But very light and works well. Thanks for the great review and feedback much appreciated.
Thanks! He's my bestie! Yes I looked at the Rab and just could not cope with the idea of a half zip! 🐩 Worked a season as a ski lift operator and the uniform gore only had a half zip, never again!! 🤣
Why did your tent get so wet inside?
It's a bit of a mystery... I've spoken to Dan Durston about it, I'll talk about it in the gear review follow up video!
Great video, looking forward to your follow up video. I just purchased the Xmid 1 Pro and purchased it, understanding single wall tents and condensation issues. But not to the point that the quilt would get wet also. Interested to find out steps to help mitigate this or if its something that will continue, heard plenty of great reviews on this tent and the 2p as well. Take care have a great week.
Thanks for the review, and insight. I just purchased the X-Mid Pro 1 due thoughts of camp site selection having a smaller footprint. As you mention I coming from the Z packs Duplex which is roomy but has a larger footprint. And made for some areas of camping a bit difficult. Again thanks for the thoughts on the tent…l hope I enjoy it 🤙🏽 on a different note I’m also looking at the Hoka Mafata Speed 4, for my next ultra, currently have the tecton x but lugs are a bit small depending on the terrain of the race.
Oh nice! I love both those shoes, Mafate definitely grippier & more plush but more vague, I find the tecton X more technical and precise though but less grip. I use it when trail running/scrambling more on dry rock. Good luck with your tent! 🤞 I'm toying with how I might extend the floor to fill one vestibule...🤔
@@Greghikes1 As you mention I enjoy having my pack with me in the tent, so putting it the vestibule will a bit different. I imagine I’ll zip one shut and place the pack in their. Some what like begging the tent I guess. I’ve heard such great reviews, on the tent and always purchase a 2 person tent I thought I would give it a try for a 1 person and might have luck with camp site selection. Sounds like I’ll also invest in the Mafata speed, as my next race is 66km with a lot of vert. The additional grip would be welcoming and as you mentioned the plush under foot is a bonus. Take care and have a great weekend as it approaches.
A thought about the custom sack is that it appears to be slightly smaller than the factory one. I have an Altaplex tent that I have used relatively few, about 20 times. I always took good care of it, except for when I was on a one-week bicycle trip and compressed it quite a bit in my bike bag for the week, more than the original tent bag would have allowed. Since then, it has developed several (around 10-15 in one group) micro holes. The tent wasn't subjected to any serious strain or stress, meaning that I didn't overstretch it, didn't face any major storms, and it was exposed to a very gentle use. The holes definitely didn't come from mechanical injuries. it comes some kind of material tiredness. On top of that, it is made from thicker dyneema the Spruce Green.
Hmm that's interesting, the sack it's in now is just one I had already, it fits quite easily, but maybe I'll go a larger one! Just in case. Cheers!
I like your idea of doubling the use of your foam pad as a groundsheet rather than using something like polycro, which has no other purpose.....unless one likes sitting on rocks without padding. :-) What are the dimensions and weight of your 3mm pad? I'm like you, I went back and forth comparing the Altaplex and Pro 1. I really like the idea of having the extra floorspace for my pack in the Altaplex, but I really hate the half moon zipper and the door hooks on my old Duplex. I'll just have to get used to having my pack outside. If only there was a Pro 1.5. Who knows, I may decide to get the Pro 2 eventually. It's hard to give up all that extra space. I went the opposite way with my tent sack. I'm using an extra large 17 gram sack so I don't have to struggle with stuffing the tent every morning. I just lay the tent flat in the sack and then lay the sack flat on top of my pack liner. I'm hoping that will help with the longevity of the DCF. I never developed pin holes from repeated folding/rolling/stuffing like some people have with DCF, but my Duplex did get dull looking after a while, which made me worry about the longevity.
Hey! Thanks! Yes I recently found another UA-cam video from a guy who I think was maybe South African? But he was 6.3 and also settled on the durston as the better option. My 3 mm pad is about 50 by 150 cm. What I would love with the durston is if they just blocked out one door in tylie and continued the floor to that wall- kind of like the Altaplex, but then of course they would have to work out some way to put the second hiking pole in...🤔
@@Greghikes1 I talked to Dan about this. You could still leave the wider-shorter section of the vestibule for an outside door for the pole and small vestibule, and have the longer-narrower section of the vestibule become interior floor space, but the problem comes with engineering the floor to be the shape of a "4" instead of a simple parallelogram. I guess it's doable. We just have to get enough of us to bug Dan enough to do it. LOL
@@spuriouseffect yep, I also asked him about it, if there were a more zpacks style floor without the struts in the corners and preferably dcf it might be easier to achieve .. I'm sure more will develop in the coming years. 😊

Aw thanks! My advice would be- skip the desert!🤣
It sounds like you could use some Dirty Girl gaiters over the top of your shoes.
The mosquitoes apparently moved to Washington.
CA does the same thing - it just depends where the fire is. Cal Fire apparently didn’t think the fire was moving toward the PCT at the time. Damaged areas are also closed for a couple of years.
It was great meeting you today in Sisters --> Terrebonne. You mentioned an app you recommended. Could you remind me what the name was, and any other recommended apps? Hopefully you got a ride to your trail today. If not, let me know!
