Alex English: Why doesn’t the GREATEST SCORER of the 1980s get the RESPECT HE DESERVES?? | FPP

  • The 1980s were dominated by Magic Johnson’s Los Angeles Lakers and Larry Bird’s Boston Celtics, they featured one of the greatest scorers of all time throughout the decade in Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, but there was another overlooked player who throughout the decade would score the more points than anyone else; and that player is Alex English. He flew under the radar playing for the South Carolina Gamecocks, as although he was more than capable, he never put up monster numbers. He would fall to the second round of the 1976 NBA Draft where he was selected by Milwaukee. He would spend two seasons coming off the bench for the Bucks, before spending a season and a half with the Indiana Pacers, as he got his first chance at being a starter. But in 1980, he was traded to the Denver Nuggets and over the next decade, he would be one of the league’s most lethal scorers, constantly finishing at the top of the scoring leaderboards, and pouring in points at a ridiculously efficient rate. He came to Denver as David Thompson’s career was beginning to unravel, He would team with Kiki Vandeweghe and Dan Issel during the first half of his time there, then pair with Fat Lever during his later years. Denver was never able to challenge for a championship, But English would turn them into a perennial playoff team and even a Western Conference Finals berth in 1985. He would end his career with the Dallas Mavericks, but he will always be remembered as a Denver Nugget, and one of the greatest scorers to ever touch a basketball, even if he was snubbed from both the NBA’s 50th anniversary team in 1996 and their 75th anniversary team in 2021.

It sucks how few modern hoops fans know about great players in the 80's and 90's. Whether it be younger fans, (Gen Z and younger Millennials), or mainstream sport media - they all pretend as if all players worth knowing were on the Lakers, Celts, and Bad Boys Pistons for the 80's, and Bulls and Rockets in the 90's, (if your lucky the Blazers, Spurs, Knicks, and/or Jazz). The three you listed are definitely perfect examples of the great players who have been memory-holed. If i could add a few more to your trio - Xavier McDaniel, Walter Davis, Larry Nance, Ricky Pierce, Terry Cummings, Kiki Vanderwegh, Fat Lever, and Orlando Woolridge.

I mean Jamal was a great player too, but wasn't nearly as versatile offensively, wasn't quite as athletic, and above all - wasn't nearly as good defensively. If they hald kept Eddie for the next couple years Baron Davis blew up into a star, so with those two in the backcourt, alongside Anthony Mason, Derrick Coleman, and the ridiculously underrated Elden Campbell, plus a solid Wesley, Eddie Robinson, and an old but still good Stacy Augmon off the bench - that team coulda actually won it all.

Alex English, Adrian Dantley and Bernard King were masters of the fundamentals. That means they didn't need highlight plays to put 28 points every night. They were also very efficient scorers. In particular Adrian Dantley is one of the best player, if not the best player, in the efficiency category, so he needed less field goals attempts to score high points than virtually anybody.
Alex English was one of the few players that increased his performance during the playoffs. That means he had a champion mentality, just like Michael Jordan and not many others. His injury during the famous series against the Lakers was an unfair twist of fate.

I was at that Denver/Detroit game when they set the all time highest scoring game record. It was a snowy day in Denver. My friend and I decided, kinda last second, to go to the game. I think our tickets cost $12.50 each and were decent seats. It was amazing, both teams up and down the court. Kelly Tripuka hit some big shots for the Pistons. Watching who was about to foul out became huge as the OTs piled up. It was definitely a bummer that the Nuggets lost, but we knew we had just witnessed something special.
One thing I will always remember about watching Alex English, the video screens in McNicols Sports Arena would play this animation of the Pink Panther turning into English when he made one his classic jump shots...it was perfect, because Alex was sooo smooth. He was such a classy guy, humble and respectful. I was always bummed Denver stars, like English and Broncos linebacker Randy Gradishar, didn't get more attention. Btw, grats to Gradishar for making it into the NFL HOF this year!

He didn't seem to advance any specific aspect of the game (Bird long range shooting, Magic fast break and no look passes, MJs revolutionary new skills and athleticism), and his deadly high arc mid range game just didn't capture the imagination in the way that Bird, Magic and Jordan did. Dude was an effortless, efficient professional scorer that could levitate and use geometry to get his shot up. Just a relentless professional scorer. Seemed just nonchalant, as if not moving. But lethally quick.
As a prideful Tarzan of the painted area and beyond, he would have me asking Matt Barnes to turn the power off

I know there was no shot clock at that time, but some of those team stats you showed when Alex was in college are SHOCKING to me.
If you added up all of the assists I saw, it looked like as a team, South Carolina only averaged ten assists or so. Was that standard issue of that era?

There were a ton of great forwards in the 80s: Alex English, Bernard King, Larry Nance, and Dominque to name a few. Put those guys on the Lakers or Celtics rosters and they win for sure. Just so happened the 80s were mostly dominated by these franchises.

I don't think Denver was the top offense or the bottom defense. I think they just lead the league in pace. Basketball is possession based. You have to use offensive rating or points per 100 possessions. You'll find that the Lakers were the top offense of the decade and Denver's defense was never the NBA's worst.

I think Alex's reputation suffered a bit because he played in Denver. The joke back in the 80s was that they were the Enver Nuggets cause there was no "D" in Denver. They routinely scored crazy amounts of points but they always seemed to give up more to the other team.

I think he is underappreciated bc (1) he had a reputation as a poor defensive players, and (2) his stats were inflated to some degree by the high pace at which the 1980's Nuggets played. One of my favorites, however.
