2024 The Year of the RETAIL APOCALYPSE
Вставка
- Опубліковано 6 лют 2025
- The retail apocalypse is alive and well. In 2023 there were 4600 stores closed nationwide while only 5500 opened nationwide. Yes it is still a net positive but definitely not a good sign of whats to come in 2024 considering we are only a few days in, and already 580 retail store closure announcements.

@@debbiec6216 Sounds great Debbie. Basically if you don't have an income of at least around $3,000 a month you can't afford to pay $1,000 a month rent and have enough left for food and all your other expenses.

Michael, order some Cole Haan dress shoes, you won't be disappointed.
Hey Michael, Fellow Chicagoian here. You are 1000 percent correct. I am a otr truck driver and haul nothing but raw material chemicals. In other words, I haul what not most but all manufacturers use to make their products. From boxes to makeup to diapers and everything in between. The market I operate in has had the total bottom fall out of it. The loads available to haul has dropped my over half and no bulk transport companies are not hiring any drivers because the work just isn't there. I drive all over this country and have been in the business for 23 plus years and I have never seen it this bad. Manufacturers are not producing or making things which means they are not ordering the raw materials anymore. It has been like this since Sept of 2022. Anyone reading this take my word on this, ish is about to get really bad out here. Do not believe anything that cable news is reporting about our economy. Myself and my fellow drivers move everything in this economy and I am telling you all now, we are all headed for an epic crash even worst then the 1930's. So many people are about to get completely blindsided by this.
Thank you for sharing this info.
I appreciate this inside boots on the ground info. I still have a hard time believing the government will let the dollar fail or the market tank. It’s so interesting to see the market flourish while sectors like you’re in have struggled for so long.
I have bought two and three coffee makers, toasters, air fryers, blow dryers, generators...you get the picture.
How come nobody is talking about this? Are sales down for companies? My small business sales are down probaly 40-50% - People just arent spending. Did you see something similar prior to the 2008 recession?
I’m not playing devils advocate here but I’m a handy man in a coastal Florida town and it’s super busy here. I do a lot of different work and all of the trades are busy
I’m talking carpentry like making built ins and accent walls, tile and bathroom remodeling work, plumbing
I’m also a landscaper for hardscaping and outdoor kitchens
Welding up T-tops ect ect ect
These people pay good too without ? Most of em. Hard work pays off
You gotta work for yourself tho
But that kinda goes without saying if your a blue collar guy you should know that
Even our local Goodwill wants 19.00 for pants they got for free. Nuckin futs!!
The pants are free, they still have to pay for the rent and leases on buildings and wages all of which increased.
Michael you give more insight on the economy than those lying media broadcasters.
It’s a stark contrast. Everything he explains comes from his experiences and others experiences
I used to turn on evening news every evening. Now, I click on Michael instead. I haven't turned on a mainstream media newscast in years. I actually have more confidence in the information from this channel.
The media was meant to brainwash and deceive you, control markets and consumer behavior
Well... if they'd discard BLS data for the pablum it is, the "experts" might not be so damn wrong all the time. I recall that hit hard in the Obama years, as on a nearly month in/month out basis, over and over and over... reports of "surprise" were the norm PLUS the next months revisions were down more than up. America was flatlined: nothing grew, hiring was stagnant, but the discount window feeding investment banks kept wall street with enough positive news that any recession reporting got squelched.
The media are propaganda puppets and soon their dirty money will dry up once their fairy tales end.

That's exactly what I started doing with movies and shows. I went on Facebook Marketplace and would buy deals on movies (ex: 200 DVD's for $40). I would even get the VHS tapes. Alot of times those would be free. People would put a box on the porch and I would drive up and grab them. I was so tired of the subscriptions. Not to mention in my opinion the best movies came out in the 80's and 90's.
Best movies were made in 40s and 50s😊
80's and 90's the best ever. hey went to a pawn shop they had video games for $2 for the Wii playstation Xbox that people used to pay $50 bucks for. VHS pawn stores wont give you anything for them. Back in the 80's you would go to a store and get atari or nintendo game and its was awesome they would cost $20 ish
The best thing was when the bottom fell out of the DVD market around 2015. I could finally curate a nice collection for pennies on the dollar. No one can hide them behind a paywall, edit them for content or anything like that. Even rare DVDs aren't worth anything anymore. I remember seeing Criterion's out-of-print Nights of Cabiria for no less than $80 just a few years ago. Now you can get it for under $20.

The cashier did not know why it was so slow, but we do. The bottom is going to fall out of the economy soon, because people are BROKE.
People are starving. Like myself😢. Cuz, cost to breathing, existing , has killed many of us to nothing. It complicated.........😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
Why are people broke? Most of us work for others. We get paid a wage and we go home to do our own thing when our day is done. The problem is, inflation and wages have not kept pace with each other.
What's the solution? I think we are already starting to see it. As older, more enfranchised Americans pass on, companies have to change how they do business. If nobody can afford a home or a service, to stay relevant ,that industry must find a way to draw in new customers. Most established chains can't do that anymore with anyone under 45.
You watch, someone will invent a method or a system that gives Incentive to participate in the economy. It can't be all stuck and no carrot forever. How each of us benefit from what comes next will depend on our lack of attachment to the nostalgia we place on how things were decades ago. I am done with the 1990's. Are you?

A lot of people are starting to revert to buying physical media, right as Best Buy, Target, Walmart etc are phasing out physical media. Hopefully this will bring it back. I mean we've seen Records come back so hopefully physical media makes a big comeback. We have been purchasing physical media more and more recently especially since all these streaming services have been jacking up prices and removing content. In a perfect world these closures would result in the return of the mom and pop stores. Remember the days of the local hardware store? There was always that guy who knew where every item was located. Now you go into Home Depot and the employees know about as much about plumbing supplies as I do about putting a satellite in orbit.
Nice comment, I have a local hardware store that I go to and they know where everything is at, its awesome mom pop stores are the best. Go to big stores some know what they talking about not many, goodluck on your adventures.

Quite a few things at dollar stores are actually more expensive when you do some simple math and compare qty to qty or ounce per ounce.
Yup that’s how they make their money. There was an era like 2007 where you could get like a weeks groceries at 99cents only for $40. It was standard $4 weight for $1 Those days are long long gone. People are better off renting houses and not apartments because you have privacy !!! You do not have to listen to your neighbors above you flush their toilets at 2am
Oh, and lord knows what else!
You pay a BIG PRICE for that! In an apartment or condo complex, it kind of depends on what neighbors you have. When you live next to bad/noisy/crazy ones it can be a real NIGHTMARE!
I would be afraid to rent a house, never knowing when the owner might want to sell it. Yes, the privacy would be nice, and I'd like the idea of having a yard to have some potted plants in, if the owner didn't want me planting directly into the ground, but just wondering when it all might end would be nerve-wracking.
Yes, shoe stores are important.
Watching from Canada. One thing I've noticed, is that the stores never offer sale items anymore. In particular the grocery store will never off sale items. You would think they would want to draw in buyers or use loss leaders, but they don't. Kind of weird. Great coverage of USA economic crash.
The reason was the change in business model implemented at a systemic level. It’s called “just in time”. It includes the entire retail and wholesale global commodities chain of finance controlled businesses. This 21st Century finance controlled business model uses technology to do this, maximizing finance’s investment in the entire global system. It was this system that broke down during Covid, “just in time” is very vulnerable at a global scale level.
You know, the WEF had predicted that the world would experience a global pandemic by 2020, and they have also predicted that the world will experience a global scale infrastructure attack by 2025, (think electronic communications, especially in finance😉).
How did they get so good at predicting these new “global” events, that are fundamentally challenging and changing the world!? Like it’s by design!🤗
We are in a depression and not a recession
No no no
It's can get OH so much worse...
I think it’s a terrible economy that is equal in severity to the Great Depression, but very distinct from it. The economic pain is different. Todays depression is an insidious disaster of a lack of productive, well-paying jobs, cheap luxury items galore, and housing crises.
Calling this a Depression equivalent to what happened in 1929 is wrong. Not many people that actually experienced that reality are alive today. People aren't waiting in hours long lines for food like they had to back then. A Depression in my mind would affect even the wealthiest people to some degree and there would be malnourished and homeless to a much higher level than exists today in the U.S.

Pirating is picking up too because of all of these rise in costs and cuts in streaming subs.
The retail apoc has been going on since late 2008. Almost 16 yrs!! The bodycount so far: Waldenbooks, B. Dalton books, Circuit City, HH Gregg, The limited (online only), New York & Co (online only), Fredericks of Hollywood (online only), Wet Seal, etc etc
around Dallas, I've noticed in the city restaurants are either vacant or if open barely 1/4 full. In the suburbs always full and a 30+ minute wait.
St Petersburg, FL is awash in "stores"..Driving south on 4th st is miles of shops and cheap restaurants..So many, you can't focus on finding what your looking for..These are not "mom and pop" stores but big corporation greed flooding us with products...Its one reason why I'll never live in St Petersburg, FL
MB I had Bad feet for 50 years a carpenter. Tried BROOKs running Shoes I never Run $165..For 12 years ordered online Perfect then Brooks changed the Mold all went Back to The Store. Which is 10 mins away SOooo store buys Only now !!..Keep Walking Kid. ALOHA 😁😁😁😁😁
Happy New Year, Michael. Your consultations are appreciated because you share factual data that is usable. I'm tired of all the could-be-maybe-maybe-could-be commentary.
We are over-retailed!
Thank you for the information.
I cancelled UA-cam TV, HULU and Im going to cancel PEACOCK
I pay for UA-cam Premium
You just saved a ton of money.
I pay for the annual Peacock. It’s cheaper and I actually use it.

Estamos definitivamente fodidos❤
Ha ha, yes we are!
I'm on the West Coast, and Dollar Tree and Rite Aide look like they're about to go under. Rite Aide filed for bankruptcy in Oct '23, and lost their Nasdaq listing, they're trading as an OTC at .29.
Americans ramped up their online shopping this past holiday season, splurging on a record-setting $222 billion worth of electronics, toys and other items. The spending haul between November 1 and December 31 marks a 4.9% increase from the previous holiday shopping season.
Waiting for everyone to say it was "all bought with credit". Maybe so, but fact remains the money is still being spent.
Prices were also 5.3% cheaper than the year before.
But due to inflation, they bought LESS goods than last year. Yes?
@@jeffw1267 Prices were 5.3% cheaper than the year before
Due to inflation....spend more to get the same if you're lucky or often times less...

I'm just looking at that beautiful weather while it's doom and gloom over here in PA. The seasonal depression is strong in me.
I would love to see a list of the states where these closings are taking place. Chicagoland, New York City, Philly, and the entire screwed up state of California probably make up the bulk of the store closings, which has more to do with crime than economic conditions.
Agreed
Aka democrat states
Office Depot Key Largo... just to name one.
In my town in South Jersey 10 minutes over a bridge from Philly. The crime increase has been negligible. But if it isn't an event at the stadiums or basketball arena or to the airport. Philly is beyond dangerous and unpredictable. It's a shame a historical place where laws were written is now lawless 😪
@@OGJeff685 Oh yeah. Lot of looting going on down there--especially in the plumbing and bathroom fixtures department.
They should crack down on all the thefts that are being committed. Rite Aid recently closed for good in my neighborhood due to theft. People are walking out with stuff like they owned the place.
While definitely theft is a factor to rite aid shutting down...the biggest reason for the fail was executives and leadership at Rite Aid, it barley made it out of 2008 recession. It's a poorly run company...I used to work there years ago and saw first hand.
@edmundosantana1155 - Very sad that people's morals have sunk so low that they can walk into a store and steal with no remorse.
Totally agree. Very sad.
A business you probably won't see on the closure list are payday loan stores such as Dollar Loan Center aa well as auto title loan stores. I had a payday loan for many years and was finally able to pay it off in March of 2023. The amount I ended up paying after the initial loan amount was substantially higher. Stay away from payday and auto title loans because the interest they charge makes it very difficult to pay it off quickly. If you ever have to take out a payday loan then try to take out an amount that you can pay off on your next payday.
Good for you sharing this info with others. Have a good evening.
Those companies are the devil. Nothing but usury
Any adult should already know this, but sadly many probably do not.
Those places are scabs.
It shows how criminal the government is that they allowed a loan shark to take advantage of you! Good job getting rid of that mess. I hope you have a prosperous New Year.❤
Can relate about shoes. The SHOES ARE TOO DAMN NARROW!
micheal we are already here with the subscriptions for something to eat. Its called hello fresh, factor, cookunity and many others
I went to Costco today (Jan 4th) at 4:30pm. I’ve never seen this Costco location this empty since Covid days. It’s usually busy even on weekdays. Might be that people still have food left since their Christmas/New years shopping or maybe they are out of money after Christmas?
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
