  • 2 million government workers received notice this week by the Office of Personnel Management that they would be required to to return to the office for work or forfeit their jobs. But the legality of this mandate is already being challenged and there is a lot of uncertainty surrounding this. However, what people need to realize is that most of these people may end up losing their job anyways due to the Trump administration cutting government spending and this may end up being one of the large layoff notice in history

Yea not, what everyone is leaving out is the deal was 8 months of paid vacation. They don't have to go to work. Which is really saving lots of money (irony). The plan is to pay thousands of federal workers to not work for 8 months, while they get second jobs or they were transitional employees to begin with, or they were close enough to retirement. And yes, they can take the 8 months vacation and retire at the end of it. A lot of temp and terms (nomadic fed employees) only work for stints in the government, they will all gladly take 8 months of paid leave. This is a dumb policy.

Not only that, but when it started getting nutty, we escaped the blue city (that had annexed our little town) and moved to a red county. Now we have no HOA, our own well, our own septic system, we got rid of trash pickup and started recycling and composting. With all that and the fact that our insurance and taxes are lower here as well, we're saving thousands annually.
We built a chicken coop and have fresh eggs daily and roosters in the freezer.
We also installed a woodstove and started doing forestry management by clearing dead and diseased trees. All those trees are stacked in neat piles ready to keep us warm. We haven't turned on our central heat in almost 4 years.
We also made this 30 year old house tight with insulation, radiant barrier, weather stripping and new windows.
It hasn't been easy. It's been a long hard haul but it was worth it.

It isn’t a “layoff notice.” It’s a voluntary deferred resignation without having to return to the office before the resignation date of 9/30/2025. Basically, federal employees are getting the opportunity to get about 8 months severance pay instead of returning to the office. If they don’t take the offer, then they still have their jobs and will simply have to go back to work like they did pre-pandemic.
The last time there was a threat of a reduction in force (layoffs) in the federal workforce, OPM simply offered voluntary early retirement incentives that flushed out most of the older workers. They could do the same thing today very effectively.

In a bigger town or city, having a sidewalk inspector sounds like a pretty important job. Assuming they are actually doing the job...
Like any other infrastructure, sidewalks can have problems and don't last necessarily last forever. Having someone who is mapping out all the problems, potential problems, mantainence needs, taking and investigating citizen complaints, prioritizing what gets addressed first.
I'm not saying the government (or private companies) don't have bs worthless positions, just that sidewalk inspector is a bad example. Stuff like that sounds ridiculous on its face, but thinking about it for a few minutes - some positions that sound silly are pretty important for maintaining a modern society.

Yeah, if that's really happening, it's a problem. As a federal worker, I'm working 10-16 hours of overtime per week and getting no comp. time and no overtime. I've been doing it for years and getting burned out with the hours and stress. I always marvel when I hear federal workers have it so easy b/c it's not me.

I live in upstate NY. Paying 30 years of property tax adds up to 100% of the property value. Stop and really take a moment to think about how corrupt this is.

If your ok with "unprecedented" then you shouldn't mind the rich being taxed a fair tax rate, that would get rid of that 36 trillion dollar deficit; that would be UNPRECEDENTED!
