Arm Across Guillotine - The Seated Kata Gatame Study

- Breakdown & Analysis on The Arm Across Guillotine, also known as The Seated Kata-Gatame, and used recently by Jack "The Joker" Hermanson to score multiple submission victories in Mixed Martial Arts.
Setup from the front headlock, the choke works with other submissions like the Anaconda, Darce and Arm-In Guillotine. While it will have you sitting back like a traditional guillotine choke for the finish, the finishing mechanics are more similar to a head and arm choke or Kata-Gatame, which is why it got the name Seated Kata-Gatame.
I study the other setups of the choke and the other transitions to the defence, including a sweep to the back and moving directly into an anaconda choke. But most interesting may be the finish from the mount, which I called the Assassin choke, taken from a wrestling move called the Assasin, also known as the Kata-Sankaku in Judo.

These recent breakdowns are awesome bro. Looking forward to seeing more
Thanks mate! Yep had a mindset change and just want to keep going week after week.
@@SonnyBrown we appreciate you doing that bro 🙌
@@SuperBlake89 Cheers! Ill keep it up!
I've been using this a lot recently when people are hard to turn for the anaconda. I'll step around the outside as though to take the back, if they extend their arm to stop me from moving around I can hit the arm in guillotine, if they don't block the go behind I'll sit into the seated kata-gatame if that fails I take the back.
It's such a strong position that I almost never go for a more standard turtle back take if I get the front headlock.
Exactly! Its become my favourite setup recently. So many good options to chain it with.
I love this
Amazing video exacly what I was looking for!
Like I always say your videos really dramatically leveled up my MMA game weather in jiu jitsu tournaments or in my MMA fights the result was the same. Thanks
excellent channel. much appreciated.
This is excellent
Your channel is a secret pearl, amazing job!
this is what im working on currently in no gi bjj, from reverse x guard i force them to post their hands then quickly drop their far knee to the floor using my legs, that brings their head within range of me and i can wrap up the seated kata gatame, so far its promising so long as i get the timing correct and i am aided by the benefit of long arms.
You never fail to impress - all the cool techniques I discover you make a video of - and with real great detail - Thanks & Well Done :)
Excellent work Sonny!
Excellent analysis Mr Sonny Brown
You're the best bro keep up the good work best breakdown on youtube
Thank you! I appreciate the support!
These get better and better!
Thank you, been working on how to improve without making them too long.
I combine this with the shultz front headlock and darce. Cant hit one go for the other!
You know I fuck wit dis 🔥🔥🔥
Oh for sure!
love this sub
This was awesome
Thank you!
Muy buenos videos de tecnicas maestro
Thanks for posting!Knew about this choke but didn’t realize it was close to the folk style move. Can’t wait to try it out.
Thank you! Glad I could provide I bit more information on the choke! 🙏
Or its called the walsh choke !!!! Love this choke Lu Mcewan used this in 2018 in her mma fight on the bucketlist New Zealand
Never heard it called the walsh choke before! Any history behind that name?
The front headlock with an arm in I've seen work as a turn in Judo by marti malloy doing it in turtle, I like doing the turn against a flat opponent in Judo. I was inspired by geo martinez doing it against hasim rida
True I didn't think of that one, I think he starts with the arm I for the turn and then switches to a high wrist when they stand? I'll have to go back and watch it.
Hey Sonny, I love your videos. I appreciate and owe you a ton for helping coach the students at my gym.
Who were the fighters in the Bellator match at 1:51? I love that sequence.
very good video and great breakdown, could you talk about matt hugues's schultz choke or this technique in general please?
I remember seeing hermanson hitting this and just trying it every day obsessively
sean brady taught me this one
I thought it was a reg guillotine😭. My favorite choke 😍
Ethan ‘Sheiky’ Thomas special!
When you understand the principles of jijitsu, you can create submissions everywhere. "This is like that."
I hear that! Glad you enjoyed it 🙏
Love this for people with strong bases were an anaconda may be risky
Perfect for them!

Why no more videoes?
What's the best finish for this? Crunching in at the angle or extending your spine at the angle? Craig Jones says to crunch in, but Danaher says to extend out, so I'm lost lol
Looks like Nicky Ryan believes in extension rather than crunching for the finish too, which makes it even more confusing since Nicky and Craig are teammates
What is the escape technique for this?
Look at how jacare escaped this exact choke by hermanson in their fight, probably a UA-cam video out there
Man .. I pray catch can wrestling never dies being mixed with BJJ
similar to the Schultz choke i think
Im going to do a separate video on the Schultz choke, but that works as a great setup for this one.
:)
Anyways to avoid getting bit in the ribs in a street fight
