Billy Boy Arnold and his family were very close friends with my mom's family. Jerome Arnold had played Bass guitar in Wolf's band. And Billy Boy Arnold was my first harmonica teacher. Billy Boy was a wonderful inspiration to me, and for me, as a boy. He was patient and kind. He taught me to walk, with him, and blow and suck , while walking. We would go to Maxwell St. And he introduced me to very many of the older statesmen of the Chicago Blues. Who would play there outdoors. And run wire, to hook up electricity. Some people thought that I was Billy Boys son. He told me that when he was a young boy like me, that he idolized John Lee Williamson. Sonny Boy Williamson 1.And went to his house to ask Sonny Boy for instruction in harmonics. When he went and knocked upon the door. A beautiful lady answered the door. That was Lacey Belle. Mrs. Sonny Boy. Who welcomed the young Billy Boy Arnold into their home. Meeting his idol Sonny Boy was akin, to meeting the pope. Billy Boy whipped out his harp. And played for him. Sonny Boy smiled and said I don't know who you are son. But it's clear you been listening to my records for quite a bit of time. Billy Boy made arrangements for a lesson. Sonny Boy borrowed a harp from Billy Boy . And had it on him when he was Stabbed to death for accidently stepping on another man's foot in The Plantation Club. Sonny Boy meant no harm. He gave every one his money. So often he had no money. From his club gigs. When he returned home. You see Sonny Boy had a heart that was tender to all. He would give you the shirt off of his back. If you asked him for it. Billy Boy was crying, as he related the story unto me. And I was crying too. Billy Boy told me, how Sonny Boy staggered home for blocks. His life's blood flowing from his body. With every beat of his great, lion like heart. Arriving at home Sonny Boy rang the bell. Lacey Belle, pulled the lever, to open the door. Sonny Boy , staggered in and said Baby They got me. !!!!!. Collapsed and died. Later Lacey Belle Williamson, made arrangements and shipped Sonny Boys body down south to be buried there.......
I love the little musician things in this, like the drummer forgetting to play the verse pattern for a couple of bars on the last verse and the signal for the end from Billy Boy. Great tune too, I LOVE The Aces!
