In the mid-80s, when US-Soviet tensions were high (Able Archer) I told a buddy who lived near Mather AFB (SAC base) of he ever saw a bunch of B-52s lifting off, he'd have 15 minutes before the ICBMs hit.
Then they had a MITO exercise. 😅

I grewup near Plattsburgh, NY when Plattsburgh was a SAC base. And the Cold War put 52s on alert 24x7x365. Had friends on the base who flew tankers. Telling me how much they loved sweeping snow off the wings in Goose Bay, Labrador. ---- Different kind of cold war today. I don't like it.
fyi.. I was US Navy 1968-74, reactor operator ballistic missile nuclear submarine (USS Patrick Henry, SSBN-599). DEFCON3, Oct. 1973, Yom Kippur War, we were on deterrent patrol, submerged, western Pacific. 1MC announcement, "Man battle stations missile. This is NOT a drill." Captain explained the situation in the Middle East as much as he knew. All missiles were spun-up ready to launch. We could have launched within 5 minutes of authenticated message from POTUS. Sixteen missiles, multi-nuclear warheads each. All crew knew if we were ordered to launch there was nothing to go home to.

Must of been a lot bigger than. Airports around there now are tiny. One or two runways.

@@SB-qm5wg Not talking about an airport. There was a Plattsburgh Strategic-Air-Command (SAC) -- Air Force BASE. It was gigantic. It's now gone. Do you know what an Air Force Base looks like? Have you ever been on an Air Force Base? My guess, you haven't spent 1 hour in uniform.

@@paulbk7810 You're right. I haven't spend an hour in uniform but I have spent more than an hour in the tiny town of Plattsburgh NY. My buddy does work on the drones at Rome NY. He's never mentioned Plattsburgh. Not calling you out. Just asking. Thank you for your service.
