What are some “rules” that you break? We say go grocery shopping when you’re hungry 🤣

Eat when you’re hungry! Society controlled what I allowed myself to eat for a long time. Not a similar struggle to Mary’s, but definitely a lifelong struggle

I kinda agree to that rule, go at least when you are a little hungry. Or I go in and it's like, do I really want that? Nah, I think I'll pass on that and I walk out of the store with almost anything. It's frustrating!

    • @outoftheklosset

I don't think it's in my control lol 😂 but I get seasonal affective depression in THE SUMMER! And living in So Cal?? It's not exactly easy to avoid the sun. So that's fun. 😝 When I used to work before I got sick I would NEVER wear makeup because I didn't want to contribute to the double standard of women needing to wear makeup to look "professional." NOPE! So I'd have my professional clothes and hair but I was never going to apply makeup "to be taken seriously." Another "rule" I break is always being the designated driver and not requiring others to be one for me. Ehlers Danlos makes alcohol really not do anything past the first 5-15 minutes lol 😂 so I just kept reducing the number of times I drank to three a year but this year I decided to just stop because it's not fun and it's not worth the risk of my doctors worrying about interaction with meds. So now I'm just the girl with the soda 🤣. Tip: most bartenders will give free soda to designated drivers! I used to bartend when I was in school & I never charged for sodas. 😎 FREE STUFF! 🤗😂

Acorn squash is my favorite! It’s really hard to cut, so be careful. I cut them in half, cut a smidge off the bottom of each half so they sit flat. Scoop out seeds. Put some butter and brown sugar in the cavity and bake until tender. So yummy! 😊

I must add a small anecdote to your story of the day. Relating to some boaters knowing how to ride waves and others not so much - my father was driving our family boat back in the day. I was sitting in the bow of the boat and we were following a tug boat maybe a hundredish?? yards behind it. Apparently we were going just a hair faster than we should have been. Because quite suddenly both of my parents could see nothing more than the head on my shoulders. In the space of about a second, we took on a few hundred gallons of water. And we were all swimming quite literally IN the boat. The bulk of the water went out the back side. And the bilge pump was going constantly for roughly the next three days. I remember LOVING it. They didnt seem to think it was all that. I now appreciate their perspective, yet I wouldn't trade that memory for anything.

Think it's definitely time to put a little fridge upstairs in your medical closet! I have one in my room that I got when I had bariatric surgery. I live in a townhouse. Mary, to treat episodes of low blood sugar, consider using glucose tablets. They act quickly due to rapid-acting carbs, are inexpensive and available over-the-counter and made specifically for this. With some experimentation, you'll learn how many to take based on your Dexcom reading. Relying on applesauce, Dr. Pepper and similar foods take too long for the body to absorb, particularly when you hit lows in the 40's and a fast recovery is essential. Talk to your endo team about this, please. High amplitude swings in blood sugars can more easily be remedied by ingesting known quanties of carbs.

Today, I went with my husband to his CF Team Clinic appointment and today was such a good day! I had such a good conversation with his CF doctor and we discussed Trikafta and I also spoke about you. His doctor was at the CF conference last week and heard about all the information regarding the study and the medication. I am soooooo happy and excited to say that his doctor has written a prescription for Trikafta for my husband. I was in tears when he said that he could take the medication and that he would write a prescription for him. I feel like “we” have a new lease on life. This doesn’t just effect my husband, but as you know, first hand, it will effect me as well. Mary & Peter...all I can say is THANK YOU! Thank you continually putting your lives out in front of all of us and truly making a difference in the lives of the CF community and beyond! Love you all!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

About the tomatoes Mary - it can depend on the type of tomato (cherry tomatoes are verrry likely to cause a reaction), but more so of the time of year. Even if you don't have a noticable hayfever or pollen allergies, it is way more likely that the tomatoes will break your mouth during the spring. Keep an eye on it and you'll be able to avoid it! :)

Sandra Bentley that is very interesting. Does he still avoid all sugar? My sister takes insulin injections once per day. Unfortunately she is quiet overweight and still sneaks treats. Her blood sugar can range from the 70s to the 300s. I think she either skips meals or overeats. It is a real struggle. Thx for the suggestion 😊

    • @sandrabentley1420
      @sandrabentley1420 4 роки тому

@@bionicprincess8008 yes, not just sugar, but keeps his carbs to under 20 grams a day. He only eats one meal a day. He has lost 30 lbs. If he snacks, It's like cheese or celery. Snacking is big problem for people with sugar issues, it keeps them in a constant yo yo of sugar ups and downs. The ups and downs are what causes the damage to the organs, kidneys, eyes, liver, pancreas etc. But eating all day long, may keep insulin levels stable but it is just increasing insulin, which, as a diabetic she does not want. Only way is to completely cut out carbs and allow her insulin levels to go down and get the insulin out of her fat, which is another place it hides. Dr. Berry, here on You Tube has helped my husband a lot.

You gotta get all the essentials when shopping, then go home and look at recipes, make them as gourmet as possible. I got a cold over the weekend and made chicken noodle soup and added 1 can of cream of chicken soup, sage and poultry seasoning and used dumpling noodles by No Yolks, it was out of this world. Simple stuff like pork chops with plenty of fat on them, seasoned and saute, served with chicken stock flavored white rice and some corn. My appetite has been wonky lately too, nothing really sounds good until I make something and sit down to eat and then it's amazing, weird, maybe it's the cold, lol.

I sure know the crazy things low blood sugars can create, my husband has been a diabetic since he was 19 and all of our 53 years of marriage. I could tell you some funny stories. He’s a retired accountant and thank goodness he had secretaries that took care of him and his blood sugars, ranges down to 20 and up to 900 when they found diabetes. He came home from Vietnam with it not diagnosed. He was a hospital Corman so he worked at Great Lakes Hospital and fell into a coma on his shift. He was in the hospital for 9 1/2 months but anyway what I’m trying to tell you is when you eat something coming out of there low blood sugar‘s it’s better to eat a turkey sandwich or peanut butter sandwich instead of your apple juice and apple sauce because they have sugar and you’ll get a spike of a high right after you eat or drink them you go crashing down. You need a combination of protein and carbs and that will help your blood sugar is a whole lot and also eat a half a turkey sandwich or something like that every two hours this is 53 years of experience have a great day!

I'd ask him and he's say, "I'm fine" then he'd realize, nope he wasn't. We always had something for him in case his blood sugar dropped. I feel you, girls. For me, it's like this all the time I close my eyes. And it also feels like I'm falling back until my head is hanging towards the ground. Some days are not as bad, but some days it's so bad, that I don't want to go to sleep. Because on those days it mostly makes me nauseous too.

When you bought the acorn squash I haven't had that in a long time. I may have to go get some. When I make it, I cut it in half, put some of the Jimmy Dean maple sausage, brown sugar and butter on the inside of it. Then I cover and bake it until it's soft which is about an hour. I know it sounds weird, but give it a try. Don't put a ton of sausage. Maybe about the size of a decently sized meatball. Oh my goodness, I know what's on my shopping list now lol. I forgot to say, real butter and not margarine is best to use since it will be overly greasy because of the sausage.

That's how I always knew my mom's blood sugar was low. She would say weird things, get giggly, and take longer to process stuff. Most of the time when I'd say "Hey mom, do you need to check your blood sugar?" she would say yes and go do it. There was a time that she was waaaaaaaaaaay giggly and said she didn't need to check her blood sugar and then I found her passed out at the top of the stairs on the varnish brush she was using to refinish the stairs. It was stuck to her hair which was funny once I got my dad (I was 9) and he got her blood sugar up. There was another time that she wouldn't check it and threw her meter at me, almost hitting me in the head. I tried to convince her that eating chocolate would make her feel better, but she wouldn't do it. Eventually she walked up to me with a Hershey kiss in her hand and said "This will make me feel better?" and once I reassured her that it would, she ate it. Eventually she got it back together enough to check her blood sugar. I think I was 14 or so that time and my dad wasn't home. So yay Mary for being able to ask for help!

Mary, I know you don't have diabetes, but as a T1D mom I found myself yelling at you. MARY, NOT ENOUGH CARBS! We treat lows with a minimum of 15 carbs wait 15 minutes and treat again if needed. Also I am not sure if this happens to you but once your stable eat protien, to balance out the crash that often comes from juice. I hope you feel better, my son is always exhausted if he crashes or sky rockets.

Can you eat a very sugary candy bar? I worked with a guy that was a bad diabetic and he had spells at work and they would give him OJ with sugar in it or a candy bar. That helped him. Does it help to try and eat snacks every so many hours to keep your sugars up or glucose tablets. My son's coworker wears a Dexcom.

First, I never go shopping. I go for blessings, what is manager marked down, what is in season and only buy that unless I am really strapped for onions/potatoes, flour. Right now squash is in season, acorn squash cut in half and cavity filled with pork sausage baked at 350 for about 50 min with cornbread baked at same time is supper tonight. Spaghetti squash cut along the equator and with a bit of garlic and basil in cavity while instant pot cooked is great with all sauces. Chicken thighs are cheap this week and hopefully marked down when I get there so can do soup,BBQ chicken sandwiches or bake some. The thing is by looking at it as blessing rather than what I want we try more, spend less and remember food is not a right in most of the world.
Secondly, how in the name of all that is holy do you get that many doctors to communicate??? I only have 3 specialties and their lack of communication nearly killed me in May. I am told I need to be my own best advocate. scary.
