Sri Lankan Prince who built a Church in Portugal!

  • Over 400 years ago, a Sri Lankan prince was exiled, stripped of his royal birthright, and taken across the seas-not to reclaim his throne, but to become a Catholic priest in Portugal. Was this a strategic move by the Portuguese to erase his claim to the Kandyan throne, or was he truly devoted to his faith? This fascinating story takes us from the royal courts of Sri Lanka to the heart of Lisbon, where the prince left behind an unexpected legacy-a church he built that still stands today.
Was Dom João, the so-called Black Prince of Kandy, a prisoner in disguise or a priest by choice? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!

Dr Careem, you are truly the best historian in Sri Lanka. Such wonderful stories, narrated with such passion and national pride. A sad fate for Prince Dom Phillip, whose future was cleverly designed by the Portuguese, who looted riches and our princes. Thanks, Dr Careem, keep up your good work.

Yes, this is a story that many people do not know
In the book by Queiroz, there is an illustration of Prince Joao and his grand mother Queen Dona Maria fleeing with a set of Portuguese Soldiers to Kotte. King Vimaladharmasuriya the 1st did not kill them but abdicated them from the Kingdom.
Queen Margarida or Santana Devi who was married to Dom Juan Dhramapala was a half sister of Dona Maria, Joao's grand mother. They lived in Kotte temporarily but King Dharamapala was planning to grant the entire Kotte Kingdom to Portuguese and having Princes with a claim to the throne in the palace was not a good idea.
This was the reason why Dom Joao and Prince Nikapitiye were sent to India.
Dom Joao's father was Dom Phillipoe Jamasinghe Bandara and mother Dona Catherina (not Queen Kusumasana Devi, but her cousin who was from Seven Korale)
A detailed account about the story of these Royals is given in my book "Five Sri Lankan Royal Families"

But most people in our country are obsessed with the narrow minded myth that Sri Lanka is a sinhala Buddhist county ❤❤❤💙💙💙💚💚💚⭐️⭐️⭐️⛵️⛵️⛵️🌈🌈🌈 Modern day scholars of the 21st century generation has a great responsibility when it comes to reversing these attitudes and rebuild a more secular Sri Lanka🇱🇰🇱🇰🇱🇰🍃🍃🍃🌳🌳🌳🌾🌾🌾🌏🌏🌏

How can you deny Sri Lanka’s Buddhist heritage? You obviously don’t know or don’t care about the troubles that the Sinhalese had undergone to preserve the Buddha dhamma in the island. I think foreigners know and appreciate more about our Buddhist legacy than people in this country! Sri Lanka being a mixture of cultures does not mean you can negate the existence of Buddhism even prior to Arahant Mahinda in Sri Lanka. And how do you account for sixteen million out of twenty two million being Buddhist in Sri Lanka? Even in Europe and America, they identify themselves as Christians despite being multi ethnic and multi cultural. Isn’t that why those countries, especially in Europe, have taken a stance against Islamist propaganda? However, when it comes to Sri Lanka and Buddhism, in spite of the larger than life monuments and numerous inscriptions and other forms of literature, it becomes a ‘myth’ that the younger generation should not acknowledge. What a sad state of affairs!

@@sujeevadealwis5513 the issue with the people calling this island Buddhist country wouldn't even accept that many other cultures too contributed to sri lankan culture lol.
      Specially the south indian culture.
The reason you wear the sarong is due to the influence of Indonesian and java culture. The lamprais you eat is cuz of the dutch.
The way the traditional houses in sri lanka is built similar to the kerala.
This level of deep insecurity that Buddhist culture will lose to others is what's wrong with this country no one is trying to invade here so stop with the fake drama. If you look around you how many Buddhist people follow the 5 core principles of Buddhism no ones does. So the issue is with your own people not the people of the other religion

@ If you take all these into account, then there’s no culture that is unique. Even Indonesia was Buddhist before the Islamic invasion and also was influenced by the Indian culture. 😁 It was wiped out because of radicalism in Islam. Buddhists tolerate other cultures and that’s why they prevailed here. South Indian is one culture? Go do your research!
