  • Went into the bush to customize Brother's Shovel !
The Cold Steel Spetsnaz Shovel is one of the best piece of gear, but is even better with a few mods.

This crafting is from Fred Perrin, knife maker.
    Scrape off the varnigh
Carve the handle into an oval shape
Thin out the protruding wood that digs into the soil
Ream off the shoulder upon which the handle sits on
Let it sit in boiled linseed oil
Round off the screws to prevent cuts on your hand
Sharpen the side with which you'll be chopping
You can also just enjoy the nature sounds, birds winds and trees cracking.

Ah, excellent! Perfect upgrades! And I think the hawk handle may also come with some kind of nasty sealer... probably poly... on it. So, like the shovel handle, you'll need to scrape it. I actually charred my entire handle, also, and coated it in my usual boiled linseed oil, tung oil, and bees' wax finish. 👍👍

That's what I had in mind as well, Ryan. I'll also take the epoxy coating off the head (apart from the eye) and mark some kinda measurement system on the handle. Now, for the sheath, I have 3 ideas, only one that would be pretty, the other two being quick and dirty fixes 🫡

I love my cold steel, too! Just a tip: replace the screws with screw-in eyelets. That way, you can take it apart without a screwdriver in a pinch.

      I love that idea !
With those screws we need a screwdriver or a convenient piece of metal. I can see the eyelet protruding being a hindrance for chopping (even though I never missed by that much) or digging, but I'll try anyway as it probably won't be that bad and I like the idea of swapping handles in the field... Genius idea from a Shovel Brother 🫡

They're handy around camp. Great tools, a bit heavy for packing long distances though.

    Why you burnt the handle?

This was my brother's shovel and he likes the looks of it, but no benefit as far as I know !

@@ARAW-__- I thought maybe it was to help cure the stain/sealant you applied. I plan to strip mine and use birch oil to teat and seal it.

      @ARAW-__-  2 місяці тому +3

I'm curious about birch oil. Only ever used boiled linseed oil and olive oil (which is a terrible mistake as it goes rancid)
Can't wait to see your videos on that awesome shovel, man !

    Only for appearance sake?
    Why?
To give gullible people the illusion you've used that shovel for years, and therefore so,sooo, experienced in the outdoors?

    • @ARAW-__-
      @ARAW-__-  Місяць тому +1

Second shovel is not for me. Notice I didn't do it on mine as I don't like the esthetics.
Do you know being a jerk to a stranger for no reason only reflects poorly on you ?
I slept hundreds of nights outside and got dozens of overnighters videos online... I don't need to pretend anything, but I think you do. Please, instead of being a pathetic hater, do something of your life.

@KevinSmith-yh6tl so you're the type of guy who takes pride acting mean and tough on the internet ?

I posted a comment to you.
You posted back telling me what you thought of me.
      Fine with me.
Now your replying to me to get a rise out of me.
      It won't work.
We both made our remarks to each other, stating our opinions, that's it.

@KevinSmith-yh6tl Nah man, you're trying to save face.
You wrongly accused me, without knowing anything about me or even taking a glance at my channel.
When called out, you invoque it's just an opinion ? That is spineless. I think you can do better, after all you didn't want someone (me) fooling gullible people. I respect that. Rest assurred I try my hardest to be a stand-up guy and won't fool anyone. You're welcome to take a look at other videos, then maybe, you'll form a little more accurate opinion 😉
Last piece of advice : try talking to strangers on the internet like you would face to face in the same situation.
