Grandmaster Flash upgraded to a computer, and he's been making loops and scratching BEFORE this! This was THE hit though. THE breakthrough that forced music snobs to admit that Rap and Hip-Hop were true music, not just a novelty. And yet people still exist who don't know of this track, people who dismiss the entire genre of Hip-Hop based on a short period of its 40 year history.
They just never learned how to truly Rock It

Oh my goodness, I was in my teens when this came out, this is REAL talent, REAL music, LIVE scratching, REAL drumming (two sets). What have we become?? These days, computer music, autotune, miming, pre-recorded playbacks and layering, so many live musicians today perform like watching a a TED talk about how to make music without needing any talent. I grant you there are plenty of genuine musicians around today, but this just reminded me how good music was then - innovative, musicians then (especially black ones) HAD to be outstanding to get watched/bought. The video for Rockit was incredible - as a teen, it actually terrified me, gave me nightmares. On finding this again now I'm in my 50s, I had to force myself to watch the animatronics - it still affects me. There's so little real creativity in music now.
