Indeed. I get goose bumps watching this. And to think, we're getting this much out of it over 30 years later. It must've been a life-changing experience back in the early 80s both hearing this for the first time as well as seeing it live. It's like the future manifesting itself right before your very own eyes.

Herbie Hancock is one of the most varied artist I've ever seen... He rocked it in the 80's with electronic dance music and now he's over 80 still producing jazz/funk albums.
Great performance, what a show. Most of todays artists couldn't perfom in these ways today. That's why the 80s kicked ass. Still got those drumpads and a module with a Simmons bank. Hurt like hell in the knuckles, but the feeling of playing a part of those days heals everything and this purely friggin' awesome!

You know,, it's been over 40 years since I saw the original music video for this song, and to this day, that video still makes my skin crawl. I love this song. Creepiest video ever and this live performance even managed to have some of the elements...ah the animated mannequins and the keytar; tell me that this isn't the 1980's at its best. Had to know how to scratch or end up earning scratch.
You know the CRAZIEST thing is how anyone could rate this a thumbs down...This is a priceless video on so many levels that whoever did has no right viewing it and has no comprehension !!!!
First cassette I ever purchased, I’m now 42, everything I listen to ranges from hard industrial and electronic to grindcore gutter hip hop, it’s this dudes fault if something funky or w a synth comes on I’m entranced. Sir, you forged a soul in me
Oh my goodness, I was in my teens when this came out, this is REAL talent, REAL music, LIVE scratching, REAL drumming (two sets). What have we become?? These days, computer music, autotune, miming, pre-recorded playbacks and layering, so many live musicians today perform like watching a a TED talk about how to make music without needing any talent. I grant you there are plenty of genuine musicians around today, but this just reminded me how good music was then - innovative, musicians then (especially black ones) HAD to be outstanding to get watched/bought. The video for Rockit was incredible - as a teen, it actually terrified me, gave me nightmares. On finding this again now I'm in my 50s, I had to force myself to watch the animatronics - it still affects me. There's so little real creativity in music now.
This is the video and song that made me wanted to play keyboards! Herbie Hancock is my major influence. I had this on Videodisc (remember those things) back in 1984. Thank you for posting this!
This live version was even know fantastic like the video version. Herbie Hancock is a great artist who's playing different musicstyles like jazz, funk , electric boogie and hiphop.Maybe someone other styles.
Yea that's how I felt when it turned 2010, 2000s was my time. I'm probably 20 years younger then you though. I will admit and agree though, this is way better than today's hip hop

I watched this live Years eve 83 and it was awesome, I still have the mono recording on cassette but don't have anything to play it on anymore. Damn, I'm getting old !!!
No computer, only vinyl for scratches. The father of EDM music. This track is ahead of it's time.
Very far ahead ....it was like Magic when i Heard this i was 9 learning the piano

Herbie Hancock is Great!!!! Hearing this song on commercials lately bringing it BACK!!! The original video was awsome!!!
If you are watching this you have just been educated on the birth of hip hop
Edward Phelps to bad it's not spoken of when there are history documentaries about hip hop
Hip Hop, Electronica... to me it's all jazz.
The birth of hip-hop was in 1979 The Sugarhill Gang... rap also started in discos
The birth of hiphop was closer to 1973. This guy however inspired a generation of scratch DJs
