Another possible reference is with the name Dulcinea: Dulcinea del Toboso is a fictional character in the Spanish Novel "Don Quijote". She is described as this perfect woman who is beautiful, sweet and kind. However, although she is constantly mentioned by Don Quijote thorough the story, Dulcinea is never really seen at all and it gives the reader the impression that maybe she does not exist. During Act I of GtN, Dulcinea presents herself as this beautiful and sweet lady. However, it's not until Act III that the reader finds out that the real Dulcinea doesn't exist.
To add to your findings, in latin "dulcis" means "sweet" and the suffix "nea" is usually found at the end of a woman's name. So her name would translate as "the sweet woman"
Owwww I actually was surprised when I commented this to a non spanish speaker that never heard of El Quijote, it was kind of a dead give away for me (as someone that is studying hispanic literature) that she was probably not real or the real Dulcinea
Oh man...that also reframes a part of the unwanted guest bonus story...but since this is a top comment on a video about the first book in the series I won't say anything else lol
huh! i barely passed my spanish classes six years ago but i knew the word dulce meant sweet and i thought it was a fitting name for dulcinea, but having not read don quijote, i didnt know the true depth of meaning behind her name >:0
Wait, seriously? That's fantastic. At this point I would have believed they were a Dangeresque reference, she goes so damn deep in the paint with her internet media references
The first example you gave actually has an additional reference. While the back half does call back to the blade meme, the 2 swords in one hand, 1 in the mouth aludes to the manga One Piece, where one of the main characters fights like that.
Somehow I missed most of these so the first one I noticed was in harrow the ninth. None planets left grief. Facepalmed my hand straight through my skull.
A reference I caught was for Zelda. Gideon is calling Harrow all kinds of silly titles and one name is extremely close to Twilight Princess, a moodier Legend of Zelda game.
See, that’s where I go to Star Wars, first. Han Solo sarcastically calling Leia those reverential titles. First bit of tension breaking banter and smashing of social niceties. I love the similarity to Zelda, too.
@@GinaLuciaReads "My body is ready" was said by a Nintendo executive, Reggie Fils-Aime, when advertising Wii Fit, but the internet turned it into a sex joke.

Dulcinea has a line to Abigail: "I would love you to explain your work, just so long as you pretend that I am five, and go from there," which I think is a reference to the subreddit r/ExplainLikeImFive.
I'm quite sure there's a the secret history reference too. I believe Harrow says something like: A typical seventh house flaw, a deadly longing for the picturesque. Probably shortly after finding out about beguiling corpses or other stuff about Dulcinea. In the Secret History a very known quote is reminiscing about the protagonists "fatal flaw", which he concludes to be " a morbid longing for the picturesque at all costs"
You're totally right. I just read Gideon this weekend and became obsessed, so I immediately read Harrow and am currently reading Nona. That just blurred together in my mind, sorry
i didnt realize the “while you were doing x i studied the blade” had a source other than tumblr. i thought the original meme was “while you were busy being heterosexual” which i thought was fitting given the lesbian nature of the book
I thought it was Harrowhark, in Harrowhark the ninth, when Orthus keeps saying " its only for my mothers pride and my houses scarcety that I call myself a cavalier" and Harrow replies she has heard it al before so she expects him say something new and challenges him to just spit it out by saying " my body is ready" .
Yes! Somebody else said that too and I totally don't know enough One Piece to notice the reference! I picked Bleach as my Manga of choice back in the day 😋
