I'm going on a book-buying ban.
I don’t know about you, but last year, I felt like I bought too many books and didn’t read enough of the ones I actually own.

Since I got into a place in my life where I could finally access and purchase books I never dreamed I could buy - let alone own - I've been on a book buying spree. Social media definitely plays a role in some of these purchases. I do want to have my own library and I'll continue buying books with that in mind but I also don't want to get carried away by consumerism and not enjoy the very books I took the time to research and buy for myself. It started reminding me of buying an outfit that I want in the moment but forget about as soon as I have it. Mine, won't be a book buying ban but more an exercise of discipline. I'll see how it goes.

I really like your suggestion of whatever encourages you to read more vs. being overwhelmed. I find that if I borrow just 1 or 2 books from the library at a time, I'm more motivated to read them through before I have to return them. Any more than that, I don't even crack open.

Goodreads refused to load for weeks at the year's end a couple of years ago, and I got so frustrated that I quit them and switched to Story Graph. I've never regretted it. But I do not care at all what other people think of books... I don't use Storygraph or Goodreads to find books. I do that in other ways. I use them to record my data just for my own sake and because as a scientist I like data. For that purpose, Storygraph buries Goodreads.

Another interesting, thoughtful and inspiring video. Thank you! I love that you are continuing to support smaller book sellers. I was very excited when I saw you add 1984 and Julia to your little pile at the end. I finally finished 1984 last year. I'm glad I did, but boy it was a struggle - so dark. But I now know Orwell was dying when he wrote it, and possibly grieving his wife, so likely not in the happiest headspace. I was so excited by the concept of Julia, but gave up about ⅓ through - it was too dark for me. (But it was around Christmas, and I wanted something light and fluffy - maybe I should give it another go?) I'll be really interested to hear your take. I'd recommend "Wifedom" by Anna Funder as the perfect compliment to 1984 and Julia. The "behind the scenes" story of Orwell's wife. I personally found it a slog, but I'm glad I read it, and other people in my book group loved it - especially fans of Hamnet. Good look with your no buy challenge - Wonderful idea!! 💪🤓

I haven't made a book buying ban per se, but I usually restrict myself when I feel I'm spending too much (in general). This year I want to give myself permission to go for a book if a want it, given I also plan to go and visit as much bookstores as I can, but without the intention to buy something at each of them, just yo allow myself to slow down and browse. Something that I find useful is to take a picture of the books that catch my eyes at the bookstore and add it to my tbr, Also, I usually give myself a budget per month, for example, 10 usd tops. While I'm not doing a ban, I did made a list of the books I have had in my shelves the longest, so I'm more aware of them (and maybe I'll end up unhauling some). You just made me think about 3 ocassions where I was told "pick a book, I'll buy it for you" and nothing was really calling me, but I didn't wanted to miss the opportunity... They all are still unread (well, one I have started it).

Love those Luna Chronicles editions. They are gorgeous! Last year I kept a spreadsheet on how much I saved using the Library and I saved a little over $800s. Then at the end of the year I’ll allow myself to purchase a few of my favs I know I really want to own. It’s really helped me save, and be proud of the ones I do own. Next time, StoryGraph allows you to scan barcodes of books. May save you sometime logging books. Or maybe not since… book buying ban and all. 😊.

2024 was definitely one of buying way too much. It was my first full year getting back into reading and being on bookstagram with access to companies I never had access to before, so I understand why I went wild. This year I’m being a lot more intentional and have unhauled books I’m realistically probably not going to enjoy as I’ve learnt a lot about my taste and am not as influenced by the hype anymore (something that’s easy to fall into the trap of when joining booksta). I’ve already read so many books that have been on my TBR for ages, so I’m quite proud! I’m not doing a full on book buying ban because those kinds of things don’t work for me (I end up breaking bans and then bingeing because “what’s the point now”), but I have made the decision to massively reduce my spending. So far, just having done that has made me far more mindful when I’m tempted and has caused me to make great decisions, so I’m happy with that. I also have a few anticipated new releases this year and I won’t stop myself from getting those! I loved this video and it was great to hear you unpack what a book buying ban looks like for you!

Oh I totally feel that, booksta is such a tempting place 😆. I kinda feel like it's a right of passage to almost binge-buy in your first year. Can't be helped. It's like being in a sweet shop as a five year old. Love that you're feeling more grounded and intentional now though!!

In a strange way Amazon helped me to stop buying from them all together. I even think they don’t know that they are helping their customers kick the Amazon habit. My adviice is throw away all your cookies every time you visited the Amazone website. They definately do not like that. They Will not only lock you out of your Amazon account for a day or a couple of days they will also lock you out of your goodreads account. I was annoyed by this at first till I realised I spent to much time at their site anyway. This made it so much easier to leave Amazon and goodreads as there are plenty of alternatives and it’s not like Amazon is the cheapest option anymore and they defenately hardly sell quality. All the times I ordered books that were badly designed print on demand copies…. This happened a bit too often to my liking.

I have been doing the 100 book challenge from Criminolly. My problem is that I get books from the library ( I❤ my library) and don’t prioritize my own bookshelves - the new and shiny (to me) catches my eye more than my own shelves. This year I’m trying to limit my borrowing and focus on what I have. If I keep going for the library books, that will mean I need to reevaluate my books. It will be time to be honest about whether I’m actually going to read them or not and get rid of the ones I won’t. Hard decisions ahead! Best of luck on your adventure!

Also, if you run out of books on your shelf, if you have a local library, make use of them! I'm a public librarian and I have very few books at home since I seldom re-read any of them. Instead I get all my reading done by checking out books from my library and through the apps the library uses. I love that it lets me be way more adventurous in my reading because I can guilt free just return it to the library if I don't enjoy it. If something IS a winner that I am going to re-read then I'll buy a copy.

Have you ever been on a book-buying ban?

    • @jonathan.palfrey
      @jonathan.palfrey 5 днів тому

No, but I don’t think I need to. I normally buy a book when I’ve run out of things I want to read; then I buy just one book and start reading soon afterwards. When I’ve finished it, I might think about buying another. I’ve read most of the books that I have; although there are some that I tried and abandoned. It would be odd behaviour to buy a book and put it aside without trying it-unless perhaps it’s a rare book and I get only one opportunity to buy it. But I don’t tend to buy that kind of book. Generally speaking, if I’m not going to read it immediately, why buy it? I can buy it whenever I feel like reading it. Especially as I buy only e-books these days and can buy them from home.

If you ask the question "why do you buy more books than you read?", you have also to ask the question "why do you keep books you have read already?", keeping one book at a time should be enough then. To me it all comes down to exploring. I am german and right now i read "De Burcht van Heer Valentin" by Robert Silverberg in dutch language. I am also intrigued to order the diary of a whimpy kid in scottish tongue and i enjoyed Henri Carrieres "Papillon" in french. I buy books second hand for 3-4$ if i can and i scan public bookshelfs. there i give books back when i think my shelves get crammed. the others are waiting to be read or given back. nothing is for certain.

Some of the greatest writers - and readers - loved heavy annotation. And it’s true, it makes finding your notes so much easier when you need them. Plus, as you said, it adds a whole new layer of fun to re-reading your books. But, as Julietta pointed out, the real goal is to help you read and write better - not just to create something Instagram-worthy. As a former bookseller, I’d suggest sticking to pencil or post-its instead of highlighters to avoid reducing the value of your books for future readers. The tabs are tempting, but they’re usually plastic - let’s keep it simple and sustainable. A trusty pencil and post-its are all you need!

I've been to two book events, and this would have been very helpful as I get REALLY awkward when I'm nervous. 1. Went with a friend to a long talk/show from an author who I hadn't read before (my friend was a fan). We were right at the back of the queue to get our books signed, and it was a huge event (in a theatre to give you an idea of scale). Because all I knew about the author had come from the talk he'd just given, after queueing for at least 30 minutes, I realised I had nothing to say to him and just stood in panicked silence while he signed my book. I love your point about having some questions and chat pre-prepared. 2. The bookshop where I was attending an event had two on that evening, but no signs up, so I accidentally gatecrashed the wrong party for a while. I'm still not sure how nobody else managed to make that mistake...

And at the end of the day it's not about the number of books you read that many seem to be obsessed about but mostly about going back and check all the books you read and enjoyed (or DNFd)that matters the most.

is it a good idea to put plastic cover on paperbacks? I'm extremely clumsy and sometimes reckless so I wanna wrap my books

While focusing on other senses such as sound (not just visual) is great, there are also many people who don't have inner mind sensory imagery associated with those senses. For example I have aphantasia but also anauralia/hipoauralia (lack or low sense of mental sound). For example, I almost never hear a song/sounds in my head, I've only had that happen to me 3 times in my life. One with high fever, another after listening to the same song on loop for hours while playing minecraft, and the other after watching a movie. And in all of these situations I was confused and looking around to understand where the sound was coming from. But from talking with other people I know for a lot of people it's common to listen to songs in their mind and that it can even be irritating and distractive. There's also the inability to recall or imagine the taste of foods you've experienced, which is referred to as ageusia-related aphantasia or taste imagery deficit. So, it affects gustatory imagery, the ability to mentally simulate or recall tastes. Multisensory aphantasia can also affect the olfactory sense.

I actually heard you should push all of your books to the back of the bookshelf, instead of lining them up in a pretty fashion at the front. Reason being, if they aren't all the same size in length, a longer book sandwiched between two shorter books (with any amount of pressure) will actually cause the outer pages near where it opens to bend one way. Of course it would be ideal to not have any pressure between our books on the shelf, beside what's needed to hold them neatly vertical, but sometimes you need to fit that one extra book for some reason or another. Thank you for the video, though!

Yeah I can see that. In that case I'd put the longer books together on one side of the shelf and pull the other books forward to match.

Not to sound elitist, but this is a no-brainer for an academic. Books are there for future reference at your fingertips. Not to be read always in their entirety.

I enjoy using both platforms as well! The breakdown in StoryGraph is so satisfying.

The only advantage of GR for me, is that just about every book imaginable is on there, and for most books there are more reviews and ratings. For actually tracking my own reading and reviews of most books I'm interested in, Storygraph is fine and that's what I actually use.

I’ve found that digital books exacerbates my buying of books I don’t read because they do not fill up my physical space. It was the visual clues of piles of unread books that would start me worrying about the issue. Now most of my new books are hidden away in a slim e-reader that travels with me. We live in an age of miracles where I can carry a huge library with me wherever I go. My explanation to myself for continuing to buy past the number I could ever read in a lifetime is that I would always have a selection of books I want to read available to me at any tine. Another rationalization I use is that I am supporting bookstores and authors so that the book industry continues. Books are so important a component of civilization that I fear that they will start to disappear if not supported.

I don’t like Goodreads because it’s outdated and owned by Amazon. Not ready to more , will await their progress, although not willing to pay.
