Speaker:
Wong Chen
Malaysian Opposition Member of Parliament
Topic: Missing Plane, Missing Billions: Malaysia in Crisis and the Politics of Hope
Of late, Malaysia had been in the news for all the wrong reasons. There had been the still unresolved mystery of Flight MH370 last year, the downing of Flight MH17, the jailing of Anwar Ibrahim, accusations of improprieties at the sovereign wealth fund, the much disputed handling of Rohingya migrants, growing signs of intolerance towards Christians and, most recently, naked tourists blamed for an earthquake. The speaker contended these seemingly unrelated events are symptoms of a failing government that has lost its way. He shared his experience as a member of Parliament with a front-row seat on Malaysia’s slide into economic disarray and more limited democracy. He shared his thoughts on what needs to be done for Malaysia to regain its mojo.
Wong Chen was the Malaysian Member of Parliament of Kelana Jaya. He was a self-described policy wonk who chaired and co-wrote the alternative Pakatan Rakyat Budget 2015. A former corporate lawyer, Mr. Wong was also the Chairman of the Investment and Trade Bureau of Anwar Ibrahim's party, The People's Justice Party.

Watch this again today when the Malaysian parliament meets for the first time today in 2021. Mr. Wong is really great.
Committed transparent honest Member of parliament, very direct and honest speech. Wish you and team succeed in running Malaysia. Most of us are in same roots in Malaysia unfortunately my father decided to migrate to Singapore. We still have many relatives in Malaysia. We want see Malaysia succeed as wealthy democratic country with your vision.
Excellent speech.Clear some of the things in my mind.
The caliber of Wong Chen of PKR is equivalent to MP Tony Pua of DAP. Both are very articulate and smart! Malaysia truly got talents!
Quantum Leap X
brilliant speech, Mr.Wong!
.l n
in all this grim wong chen managed to lift me up a little.
I am Malay muslim and i agree to the most his point of view. Malaysian need more people like him. :)
About the hudud, God only said once on His book, but he said so many times about fairness, transparent policy, about feeding the people, providing the citizen with their necessity. I think PAS should focus on fighting for these things first. Because first speech by prophet Muhammad pbuh when he was appointed as a leader in Medina, was 1) Spread the peace 2)feed the poor 3)pray while people asleep. He never mentioned hudud at all, because he knew he need to provide conducive environment, that people have no reason to commit crime. Hudud isn't main component in Islam, fairness is, kindness is, peace is, tolerant is. Wallua'lam
Well spoken. There needs to be a political change. There is hope if the opposition can get the Govt. to ensure free and clean elections and especially winning the rural votes especially in East Malaysia.
Yes , I agree with your opinion. Wong Chen you are great . You are telling the true to the world. We appreciate what you have done for us. Thank you.
Excellent take on the current political situation in Malaysia and it is because of such progressive-minded politicians like MP Wong Chen that there is hope for Malaysia!
Malaysians are accustomed to being embarrassed whenever a minister opens his or her mouth. Wong Chen, I'm sure, will not embarrass us when he gets to be a minister. I thought he carried himself very well and inspires hope that there are a great many capable leaders waiting in the wings to take over from the abysmally mediocre non-talents currently hogging the stage (who, alas, appear immune to shoes thrown at them in exasperation).

Lets hope and pray Malaysia makes it as a Worthy Nation, worthy of Trust to it's neighbors' and the World.
While he sounds way more convincing than most gov reps I'm afraid unless you have a Sabah and Sarawakian party in Pakatan Rakyat you will still find it hard to win in East Malaysia. So why not be a 5 party coalition? That's the only thing holding you back
When he said that the Indian community are being overlooked he has my vote.
I agreed with Wong Chen about schools. One school with Indians, Chinese , Malay . Is smart because Malaysian can naturally learn to speak three languages. Yes thee Malays have a good and soft heart. When you give they take but there is something in return and not only take. Is a good practice, that's the way Malaysian socialized. Is better to address Malaysian and not Chinese, Indian or Malay...
Arrest Najib and the rest of his gang to face criminal charges in court.
Justice must be served at all cost.
For all Malaysians and targetting below a certain range of income....good.The economic invite for Malaysians abroad will help the Nation. They must come hhome and Vote.
Brave man.
A careful MP, that was my first impression when we first met
He failed to mention about Impian Sarawak.. To answer the second lady's question...
Great stuff. He thinks like me. Although he does have to emphasize that the Chinese will only still stick to their own kind and little telltales such as how the continue their conversations in Chinese even if there are non-Chinese in their company or serve Chinese before other races in food stalls show their true nature. The Chinese have to recognise the serious faults in themselves before they are allowed to participate in the governing of the land. DAP or any party associated with the Chinese have to be rebranded and have more inclusive policies to attract other races into their halls. Right now the Rocket sign of the DAP party to me symbolises a Chinese Party and nothing else.
Many Speakers from the Floor are speaking and refreshing Speaker Wong Chen's mind on the problems Malaysians are facing thinking that Wong Chen is from Democratic Action Party.
YB Wong Chen is not truthful and sincere as he never try to correct the misconception that he is NOT a party leader of DAP! Many oversea Malaysians or ex-Malaysians have got the facts wrong, thinking that DAP created the problems or suggested the wrong solutions or programmes!
YB Wong Chen is a minnow, a rich professional with a lot of economic facts and figures to quote, is from Party Keadilan under Anuar Ibrahim
Enlightening thoughts...from this video...
"Freedom to speak but may not have Freedom after!"..
"Arrogant Incompetence ? Moral compass lost - A Goverment dis-oriented ? "
" Race issues have more traction in mindsets from the middle to lower income strata of Malaysian society."
And its being played to the hilt by the ruling coalition.
" Malaysia only exist in the abstract- An Idea- but not in reality."
Where Barisan Nasional side speaker?
DR.MAHATTERE MUHAMAD ,IS THE MAN WHO SHOULD BE IN CHARGE ..THAT IS IF THE WEST/USA/5 EYE NATIONS,ALLOWS HIM TO DO SO..
the hideous thing that we see in malaysia only can be mend if every malaysian felt the responsible over their action and not let the greed and corrupt take over their life and let others take the suffer and hit just because they want to remain their own lifestyle.
In response to your recent speech in HK. I would like you, Sir to ponder on these truths to engineer a better future moving forward. I trust an iconoclast of your stature can instill the change for a better Malaysia:
PLEASE THINK ON THESE:
1)Man has built in himself images as a fence of security-religious, political, personal. These manifest as symbols, ideas, beliefs. The burden of these images dominates man’s thinking, his relationships, and his daily life. These images are the causes of our problems for they divide man from man. His perception of life is shaped by the concepts already established in his mind. The content of his consciousness is his entire existence. The individuality is the name, the form and superficial culture he acquires from tradition and environment. The uniqueness of man does not lie in the superficial but in complete freedom from the content of his consciousness, which is common to all humanity. So he is not an individual.
2)Freedom is not a reaction; freedom is not choice. It is man’s pretence that because he has choice he is free. Freedom is pure observation without direction, without fear of punishment and reward. Freedom is without motive; freedom is not at the end of the evolution of man but lies in the first step of his existence. In observation one begins to discover the lack of freedom. Freedom is found in the choiceless awareness of our daily existence and activity.

Arun Paul

Malaysia had been governed by umno for 50 + years since independent from England, how can you surprise at all these scandals happened over the years????
Wong should have his lawyer awaits him at the KL airport along side with 10 bodyguards! Haha!
What ever he said are verdicts...... without checkings....whitout proves...
please put those corrupted political leaders in jail.. make Malaysia a better place to live again.
Wow... so many people listening to Wong's lies.
Notice the overwhelming Chinese pat on the backs below with one even saying he can't wait for this Chinaman and his team to rule Malaysia. Say no more.
All opposition parties in West Malaysia like PKR,PAS and DAP are parties of Warlord too. And if you think otherwise you are too naïve to be involved in politics. It's better for you to stop whining ! If you want to play the game of politics then accept whatever comes.Politics is a game Blood game and if you can't stand the sight of Blood then leave now. Sarawakian also don't accept coward politicians like you.

Take away 'Race' politics? You forget about the kampongs
This Wong Chen guy comes across as pandering when he emphasized (no less) that the Malays are oh-so-sweet and, just to accentuate the fact, that the Chinese are racist by nature - his anecdote: how Caucasians in HK are referred to as gweilos. What a stroke of "genius" (LOL) to insult three groups of people in one fell swoop. If I were a Malay, it would not escape me how patronising his characterisation is. If I were Chinese, I'd feel he was stoking episodes of Malay/Chinese strife in Malaysian history by continuing to perpetuate a stereotype. If I were a gweilo, I might be a little embarrased and feel compelled to educate the speaker that the centuries since the label was first used has all but rendered its modern usage more of a term of endearment.
His presentation offers no glimpse of the strategist or thinker that he pretends to be. Instead, it's sprinkled with soundbites and tired cliches. That's "low-hanging fruits" for you, Wong Chen (if you're reading this). Is it to compensate for a real lack of depth or substance that he reminded us, at every turn, of his past life as a corporate lawyer? (Psst Wong, in case it's lost on you, the best legal minds are often to be found out there in the trenches of courtrooms, not boardrooms.)
Wong Chen is no blast of fresh air in Malaysian politics. He's just more of the same. As he himself pointed out, perhaps most of the brightest Malaysian minds are already overseas.
Wong puitinam puitikui

Tipu lagi huh
Liar
This moron has had a script written for him. It is not difficult to point out the source of "his address". He appears to attribute the disaster that have befallen the country to its government. He fails to address the real culprit the Malaysian Chinese triads who still control much of the crime although they now use unemployed Indians, Malays and Indonesians to carry out their work for them.
He fails to say that Anwar was the man who told me and a number of other writers (VS Naipaul) over 30 years back that he would like to turn Malaysia into an Islamic republic like Iran.
He fails to say that Anwar was convicted of sodomy and not rape. Even if that were the case he attacks the judiciary's independence without setting out a basis for that attack. Anwar himself praised the judges when they threw out the sodomy case in the first instance.
By what measure and independent assessment does he conclude the Edge is a reputable paper? There are blogs who have greater credibility and access to information than the Edge. So where does he get his information from?
He uses anecdotal information cut and paste reports as his "audited reports" because he is a "corporate lawyer". But I thought they introduced him as a member of parliament?
$17-25 billion is a lot of difference. He expects clarity and precision from others when his estimates differ by $ 8billion. Sarawak Report is neither tenacious nor is it accurate. Malaysian opposition relying her data to question government in parliament is his idea of accurate information.
His incredulous "revelation" that MP backbenchers swing from one side to another like a pendulum is indicative of his ignorance and that of his party's that in a democracy does not have members capable of thinking outside party lines or changing their views. It is indicative of the totalitarian mindset of the Chinese amongst the rest of the Malaysian population who when convenient call themselves Malaysians otherwise fin it racist for anyone to condemn them.
I am Jewish and I have lived and taught in Malaysia and worked there before. I am not happy with the way some quarters attack Jews and adopt stereotypes of people. But to attack the government for the mistakes and short comings of its people from all sides is not fair or honest.
Intolerance and behaving in an erratic manner is not the government's doing. It is mainly the conduct of the born again Christians and other opposition members like the Anwar Ibrahim party.
