ROBERT LONGO - The New Beyond

Robert Longo is a contemporary American artist born in New York City in 1953. Although trained as a sculptor, Longo is known for his immense, hyper-realistic charcoal drawings. He presents The New Beyond at Thaddaeus Ropac Paris ‪@galerieropac‬ from October 17 to December 23, 2023.
The New Beyond takes over from the 2014 drawing series, Gang of Cosmos, which was based on American abstract expressionism. Taking its title from a 1952 essay by Michel Tapié, the exhibition is a tribute to the European pioneers of post-war art such as Karel Appel, Jean Dubuffet or Piero Manzoni. These artists all revolutionized art by making a clean sweep of the past following the Second World War.
Robert Longo has conceived this exhibition as a historical construction, bringing together paintings that have never met before but which synthesize European post-modern art and the influence it may have had thereafter.
The artist is not content to simply reproduce these paintings, but performs a real dissection. Each brushstroke is studied and amplified by a game of trompe l'oeil in order to be faithful to the original texture. The same goes for the colors of the original paintings to which Robert Longo refers directly in order to exercise all the subtlety of charcoal and all the skill of his art.
Finally, the artist also plays with the dimensions of the original paintings, which are often modest in size. He "Americanizes" these works by making gigantic drawings. "The Manzoni reminded me of Robert Rauschenberg's Combine with a bed," the artist recalls, "but in fact, Manzoni's work is only 30 cm wide. So I made my Manzoni drawing the size of a bed. It feels like you could climb into it."
Ultimately, Longo's new series of drawings encourages us to examine the work of artists whose work helped heal the wounds of war and imagine a different future. Their example, which laid the foundation upon which artists are still building today, could inspire a whole new generation.
