WHY The BIG 4 Could Be the BIG 6 Or 7

- The Big 4 of American Thrash has been an endearing metal institution for 30 plus years. Many have debated if the 4 bands are the proper choices, but what if it were expanded? CKN takes a look and states that the Big 4 could actually be expanded into a Big 6, or even a Big 7!

Your discussion and power and passion for this will be sorely missed on UA-cam. UA-cam and heavy metal in general will lose a legend when you go. :(
That's where Hughesy plays comes in!
he's essentially peerless, to an almost surprising degree. kept it raw, no lame sponsors or overly sanitized approach. just genuine music nerd passion.
I would of added death angel and made it the hateful 8.
This
Horsemen4deth Death Angel just gor their first Grammy nomination... Humanicide.
I agree with you, man. Death Angel is so overlooked and underrated. I thought their most recent album was great.
Horsemen4deth *have
I just saw Death Angel. Totally agree.
Metallica
Anthrax
Megadeth
Slayer
Overkill
Testament
Exodus
Death Angel
jeremy miller remove anthrax and megadeth
@@fredriksvard2603 why?
Ramy 1 irrelevant generic bands riding the coattails of the others, there are just two distinct ones
Fredrik Svärd Anthrax and Megadeth, especially Megadeth, are amazing, and at least are both way better than Metallica.
Artanian Jumping Man no
Sepultura?
Amercan thrash. Which sucks compared to south America and Euro thrash
Add Voivod and Coroner
Big 4 is basically about commercial success.
My big 4
Slayer
Anthrax
Overkill
Exodus
I agree with Testament and Exodus, but when you have more than 4, it is no longer big. It feels like a participation trophy at that point.
My big7 would be Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Overkill, Testament, Nuclear Assault and Sepultura
Man Septultra is so underrated in merca among the normies. They only know Metallica and think they are still good.
Exodus has to be on the list
We in the Heavy Metal Comunity are spoiled with the talent.
It is Anthrax's lyrics and clean vocals which make them sound different - if you ignore the vocals and listen to the music, it is actually pretty similar to the other three. And I would leave it as the big four - I understand Testament and Exodus were great bands too but the big 4 really stand alone IMO.
I am so glad to see a new video from you
Forbidden and Suicidal Tendencies i'd personnel throw into the pot, both have unique takes on the genre like the big 4.
Throw Kreator in and then you got my Big 8.
they are already part of the teutonic big 4
I would make it big 8 so I can get death angel in there
I never understood or I guess “ got “ Anthrax . I’ve listen to their catalog and have seen them live numerous times supporting bands and I think they’re terrible . To each is own I guess . That’s what makes metal great 🤘🏻.
USA 10: Meta, Mega, Anth, Slay, Over, Exo, Test, Death A., Flot & Jet and Forbidden.
I’d add Death Angel to your list to make a big 8. IMO they are making the best thrash out of all the bands these days
The strange thing about the Big 4 covering so much of the market share back in the day is that now with Spotify I can go back and explore and enjoy some of the second-tier thrash bands such as Kreator, Death Angel, Metal Church. Flotsam/Jetsam and Overkill ... Also in my heart it had always been a Big 5 to me - the Big 4 and Sepultura (Max era)
I'd call sepulatera death thrash almost. They kind of have every metal style in one.
Gotta have Overkill.
I would say a good example of a band that was broken up as a result of the grunge movement was sanctuary
The Big 4 and opening acts like Exodus Testament Overkill Death Angel Possessed Vio-lence and Forbidden will be a kick ass tour for sure. I doubt that it could happen one day.
When it comes to pure thrash death angel is actually my favorite and anthrax is my second favorite thrash band
I'll be honest, I clicked on this thinking this was about the Big Four accounting firms. UA-cam suggestions...
Many of these thrash bands had alot of relations with each other member-wise as well (with Testament being the only exception I believe).
Metallica - Megadeth (Dave Mustaine being a former member)
Megadeth - Slayer (Kerry King temporarily playing with Megadeth)
Exodus - Metallica (Kirk Hammett being a founding member of Exodus)
Overkill - Anthrax (Dan Spitz being a former member of Overkill)
Steve Souza of Exodus was a member of Testament (then known as Legacy) prior to Chuck Billy.
@@joemom2671 ah right. Totally forgot about that.
here's my opinion on this :
a) First, the debate is what makes it interesting, I think it's cool that as a concept, the Big 4 of Thrash exists, even though as some commenters have said, the Big 4 themselves would probably say there was no such thing back in the day.
b) The Big 4, I feel, is purely sales based, and it just so happens that the American Thrash bands were undoubtedly the most successful in terms of sales.
Though it makes the label sound very superficial, any other criteria would be too subjective and there would never be an established Big anything if we took any other criteria.
c) Establishing the aforementioned point, yes, the Big 4 completely justify their status on the list.
Anthrax alone, which is very much the smallest of the 4, outsold their nearest competitor by millions.
d) I actually think they represent the different aspects of Thrash pretty well - Metallica being the frontrunners that encapsulated everything in equal doses, Megadeth showing the technical aspects of Thrash and unconventional writing structures, Slayer pushing the extremes in terms of speed and aggression and Anthrax showing that you could bring a different, even fun, aspect to the genre too.
e) As to the usual suspects for would-be replacements, first let's disqualify Death Angel, Testament and Annihilator because, with all due respect to their musical abilities, they joined the game too late to be included on that list. I know Testament were touring since the early 80s, but by the time they actually released The Legacy, each of the Big 4 were either working on or touring for their respective 3rd releases, and most importantly, they had already carved out their respective niche in the industry.
Then we have the band that most thrash aficionados in the 80s would argue had the most legit argument to be included in the 80s (to the point that Mustaine himself once referred to the group as the Big 5 to include the band), Exodus.
Well, the sad truth is, Exodus just couldn't keep it consistent.
Exodus' debut album is a surefire thrash classic, and their influence was rivalled only by Metallica and Slayer in the early 80s, however Pleasures of the Flesh was polarizing to say the least, and while Fabulous Disaster looked to get them get back on track, their next 3 albums seemed to get worse and worse.
Now that leaves us with the final band, and the one which has proven to be the most prolific Thrash metal band ever, and quite possibly the most consistent, Overkill.
But again with all due respect, and they do have mine in shades, they never really made a significant enough impact to dethrone any of the 4, and I would actually argue they've gotten their best streak of albums in the 21st century rather than the heyday of Thrash
f) Finally, just to bring focus on the merits of the Big 4 themselves, just look at these albums
Metallica - Kill Em All+Ride the Lightning+Master of Puppets+And Justice
Megadeth - Killing is my Business+Peace Sells+So Far So Good+Rust in Peace
Slayer - Show no Mercy+hell Awaits+Reign in Blood+South of heaven+Seasons in the Abyss
Anthrax - Fistful of Metal+Spreading the Disease+Among the Living+State of Euphoria+Persistance of Time
Wow.
Just look at those albums, those are the albums each band released from their inception to 1990.
If we consider Kill Em All as the album that started it all, that was released in 1983. In the 8 years from 83 to 90, you can understand how each band basically established themselves as powerhouses in the metal community with these records.
Great video! I'm going to miss these.
Agree with all you said. Honorable mentions should maybe include Watchtower, Death Angel, Vio-lence, Kreator and Living Death.
I would add 2 more... Death Angel, and Exciter
Hey dude I don't know if I'm the only one but I need your review of Cattle Decapitation's new album Death Atlas please man.
I don't think there any argument the BIG 8 includes, Testament Overkill, Exodus and Death Angel.
In terms of style, while I do believe Anthrax is the most underrated of the four, I feel like there were more artistically sound, innovative and powerful thrash metal bands.
Although, Motorhead could arguably be there, considering speed metal directly impacted thrash metal.
The Big 4 is basically the most successful 4
i always lump overkill with the big 4 but i am a New Jersey homer so i have to represent any bands in my state lol
Include Death Angel and Overkill.
Refine to currently active. Slayer has just retired, therefore they are “Legacy” now. So I would replace them amongst the others still active you mentioned.
I agree
Never been a fan of Anthrax and always thought Exodus should've been the 4th band. But..."Bonded by Blood" took WAY to long to get released after it was recorded, it was passed around the underground for months, and when it was finally released, they were only able to get onto the back of the boat behind "THE BIG FOUR". In short, Exodus blew it!
Testament's first two albums match up favorably against any of the other Big Four's (or ANY thrash metal band's) first two albums.
Metallica, Slayer, Overkill, Exodus would me my big 4
Metallica, megadeth, anthrax, slayer, testament, exodus, overkill, kreator, annihilator. Simple as that
big agree.
NO BODY i just had a good idea of who the big 7 would be.
...or a big 8 Canada a chance, with Annihilator
Big 8 with death angel
Damn I got 3/4 right
I thought you were leaving youtube? Not saying I want you to leave, just confused lol
Anthrax and Megadeth may have had music videos early on, but Slayer and Metallica didn't join the video party until 1988 and 1990.
Overkill, Testament and Exodus over Kreator, Death Angel and Flotsam and Jetsam
I wouldn’t mind replacing anthrax in the big 4 with overkill. Much better and heavier band imo.
Overkill
What about the Big 4 of Heavy?
Black Sabbath
Judas Priest
Iron Maiden
Motorhead (? - cuz "they play 'fast rock n' roll"...)
Big 4 of classic heavy metal
Judas Priest
Iron Maiden
Accept
Dio
Testament!!!. . .Exodus. . . . Hey. My God! I got both guesses (wild guesses) right, right in order. Exodus, especially, was a huge, wild, stabbing, grasping guess. Metal didn’t become king around this time. . . This Was a time. . .during this time/era Metal became extreme, insane, stupid, more. . . insular. . . and from that spot. .simply went completely insane! You mention record companies. I suspect record companies, especially smaller ones, helped fuel this. ‘Bring the Noise’, with UTFO? I’m very glad you remember this song. I know virtually nothing about overkill other reading their name a lot. I’m sure it was at the least a fairly good pick. Thrash. Judas Priest really Played around with thrash with ‘Solar Angels’ and ‘Desert Plains’? Listen to ‘Exciter’ by Judas Priest. Not worth listening to, but if you listen to other bands cover this song you can often hear something new. I think this was a preview of ‘bands (record company song writers)’ writing songs where they play the same note over and over, likely done as a song writing shortcut? Judas Priest ‘Ram it Down’ album has a lot of repetitive notes that are done in a way that is swirling and more compatible with pop music? I’m not saying Thrash music consists of music that is just a song writing shortcut, not at all, but I suspect the same note over and over was intended at least in part as a song writing shortcut. I don’t know.
Correction homie they they were chosen as the big 4 because they all started or came out around the same time except for Megadeth because Mustaine was a part of Metallica then he starts Megadeth. So they they based their choice on that these 4 bands actually came out almost exactly at the same time not so much sales because they were just starting out
Then it should have been Exodus or Overkill in stead of Megadeth by that train of thought.
@@jeremymiller4231
Valid point since Kirk came from Exodus
And Megadeth didn't exist until that happened, and I dig Anthrax but Overkill
Is a better fit
I would just add death angel
What about suicidal tendencies?
I think after 5 it’s just throwing in any “successful” band from that time
Big 4 imo. Metallica, sepulatera, testement, dark angel.
Well there’s like two American big fours. Metallica Megadeth slayer anthrax, and then there is testament exodus overkill death angel
Metallica
Slayer
Sepultura
Pantera
Anthrax is just as good as any
It's a SHAME Kreator is not in the big 4!!!!!!!!!
That’s because they’re a German band
@@alex_garza9061 still epic
Overkill disqualified themselves by shitting out the same album every 2 years nowadays
Instead of the big 4 of THRASH metal, I say just make it metal in general, bump it up to big 7, and those 7 would be:
- The original big 4 (You can debatably swap Anthrax out for another band, but I say screw it, let them stay)
- Black Sabbath
- Iron Maiden
- Pantera
O̶c̶e̶a̶n̶ ̶Se̶v̶e̶n̶, Magnificent Seven. Problem solved!
To me it was really the big 3, Metallica, Megadeth and Slayer. Any attempt to add a fourth seems forced just to make an even number. Totally agree that big 6 or 7 would be more appropriate. If Anthrax are included then so should Testiment, Exodus, Overkill, Nuclear assault, Suicidal Tendencies.
I always found it strange that the big 4 was american only and thought that Kreator should be the 4th instead of Anthrax.
I wouldn't worry about the east coast, west coast thing; the Teutonic four might not be from the same side of Germany so why should the american four. If it were up to me Coroner would be apart of the Teutonic four and they're Swiss.
I don't like Slayer at all, so for me, the Big 4 are with Testament.
EVERY member of “The Big Four” would tell you there was no big four to begin with in the 80s
Big 4 should be Metallica, Slayer, Sadus & Blood Feast. If you include other countries I'd add Destruction & Kreator. Anthrax blows.
I was never a fan of Iron Maiden but wouldn't leaving them out be a glaring omission?
I think Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, Megadeth, Testament, Exodus, Annihilator, and Overkill are the most important thrash bands. Death Angel I don't think were as important.
Nah, I would place Death Angel ahead of Annihilator.
Dark Angel > Death Angel
Add Exumer and Sodom...
Overkill >>>>>>>>>>> Anthrax
Imo Anthrax never belonged in the Big 4. I would have put Exodus or Overkill in the Big 4 over Anthrax any day. As for who else (other than Exodus and Overkill) deserves that title, I'll go with Testament, Kreator, Flotsam And Jetsam, Sepultura, Death, Metal Church, Voivod, Destruction, Death Angel or Vio-Lence (even though they had a short run).
Anthrax needs to leave
I disagree, it should really be the Big 3 and kick out Anthrax.
