A friend was one of the last people to suffer the penalty of the birch for fighting. The penalty was stopped in 1973 but it took many years to be taken off the books.
They also forbid smoking for prisoners in their prison which is one of many reasons reason people don't like going there.
Our child minder was from the Isle of Man, she couldn't wait to leave as she claimed they were the nosiest people she'd ever met always wanting to know your business.
There is also an interest article in wiki about the WW2 internment camps for enemy aliens on the island.
It's a lovely place for a long weekend if you enjoy a pint or two or three or a week f you like a relaxing time sightseeing, but a week is long enough.

Ha! The shot of Spanish Head is actually of the Inn at Spanish Head on the Oregon Coast!!! That said, this is otherwise a good overview of the island. I've lived in England for over 50 years but the Isle Of Man is still home and I get homesick regularly. I think the video could have given more information on the railways .2 Of the electric trams are the oldest working trams in the world and there are 3 different narrow gauge steam railways. Also the largest working water wheel in the world is in Laxey! Still a great and informative video ,thanks.

..I think modern nations are missing a trick by not using water wheels connected to electric generators; the wheels don't need as much funnelled/channeled water for them as did old 'driving/shaft power' wheels for powering machinaries and mills, plus with modern needle or roller bearings too, than the old tallow greased plain bearings...

      💟💟🏙️🏙️🫒🫒🍎🍎🥀
      Dears,
The dominant religions of Christianity, Judaism, and Islam believe that Adam and Eve came from heaven to earth because they ate the fruit in heaven at the persuasion of the devil.
We have to go back to heaven itself.
A garden with fruit-bearing trees, animals and streams is not an artist's imagination.
Humans can understand that Moses, Jesus, Krishna, Buddha and Prophet Muhammad have spoken about heaven if examine religious texts.
If we ignore the knowledge of this heaven, we will live on earth as ignorant and God will consider us ignorant when we reach the Hereafter.
As Jesus said, it is better to enter heaven with one eye than to enter hell with two eyes.
It can be understood from this word of Jesus that we will enter heaven with the body.
From this we can understand that the heaven that Jesus spoke about and the heaven that Islam introduces are the same.
Not only that, hell will also be terrifying from this word of Jesus.
The belief in heaven in ancient religions such as Judaism, Hinduism and Christianity has been obscured over time.
We must understand Islam's clear explanation of heaven.
In heaven there will be beautiful flowing rivers, beautiful orchards with fruit trees, beautiful birds, palaces made of gold and silver, various fruits, fried meat, rivers flowing with various drinks, lasting pleasures, endless happiness and beautiful weather.
It is said in Islamic belief that those who died from the earth at a young age and those who died at an old age will be reborn in Heaven as youngsters.
Even if we are black or white on earth, when we reach heaven, everyone will be changed to be very white and beautiful.
Below are some hints from Islamic scriptures about the comforts and pleasures that women will get in heaven.
The very white, very beautiful and loving heavenly maidens (hurul een) are not only the friends and servants of men in heaven. Friends and servants of women who reach heaven from this earth
      Also Hurul Een.
(Narrated by Aysha, the youngest wife of Muhammed (PBUT).
God's messengers interpreted the religious books and told us that the Lord of the Universe who is all-rich, all-powerful and all-knowing has created an immortal holy-royal heaven for us and is ready to give us a rich heavenly life that never perishes and is ready to give innocent marks to humans.
Let us not simply miss out on the heaven given by the almighty and rich God who created us and the universe from nothing.
After our death we must return to Heaven with our parents and loving family members.
Dears, The shortest way to reach the Paradise of Heaven is to 'worship the Lord of the universe' alone, pray to him alone and do good deeds with human love.
The names Allah, Yahweh, 'The God', Hiranyagarbha and Jagadeeshwar are the names given to the 'Single Supreme Lord of the universe' in different languages.
This is the only way to Heaven that the prophets followed.
Through the Bible and history, we can understand that Abraham, Isaac, Joseph, and all other prophets prayed only to the Lord of the Universe.
This way of Prophets is enough for entire humanity to return to Heaven.
The names Allah, 'The God', Yahweh, Hiranyagarbha and Jagadeeshwar are the names given to the 'Single Supreme Lord of the universe' in different languages.
The name 'Allah' for 'The Single Supreme Lord of the universe' is a great and meaningful name in Arabic language.
The name 'Allah' is a best name to address the 'Single Supreme Lord of the Universe' when we ask anything from our Lord while praying.

The wallabies derived from escapees from the wildlife park and were not 'introduced' into the wild but have thrived (although rarely seen unless you know where to look). The picture of 'Spanish Head' with hotels or apartment buildings is not a picture from the Isle of Man, the real one is just a rocky cliff headland near The Sound. The Manx currency is the pound, and is equal to GBP, + English, Scottish and Northern Irish notes are widely accepted. There is a lot of Viking history and heritage and a lot of viking derived placenames, Laxey, Fleshwick, Foxdale Snaefell etc. and Tynwald. There are the remains of mine workings and The Great Laxey Wheel (built 1854, 72ft 6" dia, still working) which is the world's largest working water wheel which pumped water out of Laxey mines. Due to the maritime climate it never gets the extremes of temperature due to the sea around us. There are no snakes, deer, badgers, foxes, wolves, squirrels, moles, voles, otters, beavers, but we do have lots of choughs, hen harriers, peregrine falcons, ravens, seals and often dolphins and basking sharks. The Royal National Lifeboat Institution RNLI was founded by Sir William Hillary who lived in a house overlooking Douglas harbour.

My great grandfather was born there but moved his family to British Columbia. My brother and I found his grave in Vancouver with no headstone. My brother Philip had a headstone placed on his grave last year. I had them save me some dirt from his grave. In a week or so I’m going to travel to Alert Bay where my great grandmother is burred and put that dirt on her grave. I then will collect some dirt from her grave and place it on Grandpa Dakin’s grave. It might not mean anything to anyone else but me. I read Grandpa Dakin was very proud of being Manx and attended meetings in Vancouver with other people from the Is. Of Man. Apparently he had five sons with his first wife but after she died he married my great grandmother. My grandmother then is/was Manx. I guess I have DNA that is strongly Manx. I live on Vancouver Island.

As a proud manxman i feel i have to make you aware of a few things you got slightly wrong Firstly the point you referred to as point of airie is pronounced point of air.
Secondly the photo you show as spanish head is not a photo of anywhere on the island.
Third the wallabies were not introduced in the 19th century but escapees from our wild life park in the 1960s and a further 10 escaped in 1989.
Fourth we do have speed limits on most of our roads the only place we do not have speed limits is where the national speed limit signs are displayed.
Fifth The TT races started in 1905 as a car race that in 1907 became a motorbike race.

I realize this was more about tourism and history. I wondered how much it costs to live on the Isle, compared to the US. Supposedly, there is a flat 10% income tax, and one still gets the benefit the free British healthcare system. Admittedly, 59F is a bit cold, and I recall no mention of winter weather.

    • @Person01234
      @Person01234 7 місяців тому +1

We don't get the benefit of the british healthcare system, we have our own NHS. In fact pretty much all our systems are separate and self-funded (our budget is also balanced we don't run our economy on debt). Also just FYI, "free healthcare" actually costs less in tax than the US system. The US government spends way more per capita, and as a percent of GDP, on healthcare than almost any country where healthcare is guaranteed. And doesn't even cover everyone, people still have to buy their own healthcare.
The main cost saving is that we don't have to spend eleventy trillion dollars on the military, partly because we don't have one and partly because we're not invading everything. Also it's not a flat 10% income tax rate, there's a 10% bracket and a 20% bracket, but there are other tax breaks compared to the UK for example. No business tax except on certain institutions like banks, no capital gains tax, no stamp duty and a few other things.
As far as cost of living, "the US" is a big place, it's cheaper than some places more expensive than others. Cost of living here is not exactly on the cheap end of things, but the average income is higher than the US and it's certainly not as expensive as some of the ridiculously costly big US cities.

The wallabies would revel in that climate - not dissimilar to Tasmania in Winter. minus the Summer heat that finds it's way down to the Apple Isle. I have no idea if they are regarded as an introduced species by the Manx - it's easy for newcomers to become pests over that time period. but here in Oz they are much loved for their temperament compared to the larger kangaroo species.
