    I have several SGX 2000 and still use one for jam sessions today. Bough my original one new in 1991. With the X-15 foot pedal that includes the two CC foot controllers the unit can be quite useful. Digging deep with the manual will allow far more tone shaping and on the fly changes than most users would imagine. The units discrete analog pre-amp and effects blocks make it very flexible as well. Combined with my Mesa Mark IV I can recreate live the finished studio sound of many styles, from rock, pop, to metal. Built in NY, USA, these units are high quality and with a little maintenance, will run for a lifetime.
    Nice playing by the way as well!

      Hey, thank you for the comment and thanks for the compliments. I probably need to re-tube it. When I was younger I used to play with the different sounds and making my own custom sounds. It wasn’t bad but I should have used it with my Mesa head like you said you do.

    I also have such a device and use it to this day. I really like. I had a few multi effects, but I won't get rid of them. I can easily find my favorite sound in it and I almost melt into the music when I play with it. An eternal piece, the real iron!!!

      @@BillLau I thank you for making a good presentation, I really like it. I also have it connected to my computer and it plays through a mixer on studio speakers. Here in Hungary, the band Ossian recorded three records with such a device and I managed to find that sound in it. I know what I want to hear and I find my sound, which I am very happy about.

    I bought the bass version of that brand new with the huge MIDI pedalboard in 1989. I saw one on eBay a few years ago so I got the art nightbass sgx with the X-15 pedal board for under $200. I think I paid a little over $1,000 for the rack unit and the pedalboard back in 89. Works and sound brand new. And that thing is still as fun as it was back in the day

    • @BillLau
      @BillLau  11 місяців тому +1

      Yes! I remember the nightbass one, when they came out I used to check them out at my local music store, that’s awesome that it still works like new and sounds awesome. My tubes need to be replaced but it will probably sound decent once I do it.

    You're crazy. The SGX series are super dope. You have to know how to program it to suit your playing style. The presets should just be a point of departure.

    • @BillLau

      It was great when I used it years ago. Technology has gotten ridiculously good now. It’s not the worst but it’s also not the best. Yes of course it’s how you program it. I don’t think I did too bad of a job with sounds and basic programming. I just don’t think it holds up compared to what is available now. I respect your opinion. Thank you for checking out the video and for leaving a comment. I appreciate it.

      Yeah exactly I have a studio edition nitebass. People forget that there is a preamp tube you have to replace those every five years because they don't last forever and yes, they do sound like shit if you have an aged tube in there. Also, you can change the parameters on effects, something you can't do with pedals

    I still think it has a sort of cool sound. Synthetic, but interesting. I wouldn't want one back (I had the original) but I think I got pretty good sounds out of it, if you don't really expect traditional tube amp sounds. I used to do this thing where I'd set up the pitch shifter to be controlled by the X-15 pedals and one controlled delay time and one controlled pitch. I'd use another pedal to control feedback amount and I had a great soundscape generator. Years after I made my patch I heard Fripp using similar techniques, though I'm sure using an Eventide H3000 or similar.

    • @BillLau
      @BillLau  10 місяців тому

      That’s a great idea. I used to use the pitch shifter to play songs in drop tunings. It was definitely very synthetic sounding (great description). I loved it when I was younger but it definitely needs a tube change. I mean, I wouldn’t choose the ART over a real amp but it was well used when I was younger.

    Question I have the same sgx..Sounds great can you share your setup.Like are u running into the computer using simulation software i to studio monitors or to a power amp and cabs

    • @BillLau
      @BillLau  4 місяці тому +1

      Thanks for checking out the video and for leaving a comment. I have it running through my audio interface and to my monitors. I don’t use it too much anymore. Most of the settings were from when I was a lot younger. I did my best to recreate sounds utilizing what I had. At the time I had it running through a power amp into my Mesa boogie cabinet. It sounded good for what it was at the time. Thanks again.

    I still use mine. Bypass the Tube\SS Distortion and use your dirt pedals in the loop, post Compressor. Run your boost pedal(s) to the front input. The pitch tracking is bad for all units of that era but I was surprised how bad the distortion is? Turbo Tubes, Tube Stack or Warm Solid are perhaps useable for - - something - -- I suppose - -- I dunno what though. LOL . Not 80's rock and metal though this sounds nowhere near a JCM 800 etc... But my drive pedals do the job in the loop. I usually run it into a BBE Sonic Maximizer (for era authenticity of course) and a SS power amp in to a 2x12. But it sounds better into an interface using a cab sim and IR's on computer. 🍻 Actually, I also run this in the loop of a Peavey 6505+ to play at lower volume.

      @BillLau  Рік тому

      Wow, thanks for the comment. Some great suggestions here. Much appreciated, thanks for checking out my video. I have a peavey JSX, I should try it through the FX loop and see how it runs. There’s no doubt the tubes need to be changed on mine which is part of the bad sound but in it’s day I thought it was great. Lol. I had no idea. Thanks again.

    You seem to the the Express version. I have the regular 2000 unit and, pardon me for saying it, but I don't think you have it set up right or something. My unit doesn't sound so bad as your demo.

    • @BillLau
      @BillLau  22 дні тому +1

      Fair enough. Perhaps I don’t. Again, I haven’t really played with it in detail since I was a kid. I was just showing it how I remember it and how I had it set. I’m sure it’s capable of more but mine does seem to have some issues in its age. Thanks for checking it out and commenting.

    You're crazy, bro. The SGX units are killer. You obviously never took the time to learn how to program the thing, which is crucial. Using only presets is

    • @BillLau
      @BillLau  4 місяці тому

      Who said anything about only using presets? I programmed a bunch of sounds in there. I even said that in the video. I had sounds I named like Ibanez, I had clean sounds. It honestly does not sound as great as the modern amp sims and the technology that is available to us now. Also when I primarily used the unit I was 13 years old and I used it for heavy rock and metal music. It served its purpose like I said but I also had a Mesa boogie at the time which sounded way better. To each their own I guess…thanks for checking out the video and leaving a comment.

    they sounded best,well to me when i used mine, direct into mixing board ,any amp i plugged it into seemed to be real grainy sounding and brittle ,but in some nice pa speakers it did pretty good
    still have it,but havent played with it in while,it helps me a lot,i look at it when i am tempted to buy processors again heheh,

    • @BillLau
      @BillLau  Рік тому +1

      Good point. I used to run it into a power amp and into a cabinet. It was ok for what it was. It definitely has a “dated” sound to it now but it’s still good fun to mess around with it.

    Anyone else think the Zakk Wylde preset sounds way more like Type O Negative? Zakk would NEVER sound that scooped!

    • @BillLau
      @BillLau  9 місяців тому

      Yes, you’re right, I can hear type o negative, good call! When I was 15 it was a good sound for pinch harmonics, plus it probably had a pitch shifter on it too dropping it down a half step, which is probably why I named it that. All of the sounds on there were created by 15 year old me. I was much newer to playing guitar so yeah, my sound creating skills weren’t that great yet. Thanks for checking out the video and for leaving a comment you rock!
