Southeast Slide | Climbing Mount Colden in the Adirondacks

- The Southeast Slide formed in 1990 and has become known as a more remote, adventurous way to reach the summit of Colden without the two trails. Less classic than the Trap Dike, this slide is nonetheless quite exposed, a bit steeper, and sees far less traffic. The views back towards Marcy and Skylight are exceptional.
From the trail, bushwhack onto an area of sandy wash and continue up. The first half of the slide follows a narrow, twisting track along a stream and involves a few short scrambles. At about half height, the route opens onto a broad slab that continually steepens as it approaches the summit. The rock has had less than 20 years to weather, so it has tons of friction and makes a couple of improbable-looking swells easy. 3/4 of the way up, jog right through an obvious gap onto a parallel slide that quickly grows much steeper. With increasing discomfort, friction up the last 200 feet to a dense conifer thicket and the trail beyond.

Tips for people just getting into hiking:
Don’t do this hike if you are a beginner! Seriously
LNT - leave no trace. Meaning if you carry it in then carry it out and if you do see trash on trail try to carry it out as well to help keep these mountains beautiful and clean.
Do The Rock Hop - The Alpine vegetation is very rare and very fragile so when you’re on the summit of these mountains please only walk on bare rocks to avoid killing the vegetation!

I climbed that in 1994.it was definitely an experience . With not alot of open rock climbing experience .was an awesome day though.
I climbed this a few years ago - I live close to the ADK mountains. It was def an experience.
Such a good one and so easy to get too!
Wow, you sure get around!!!😮
I have done everything in the east coast summer and winter.. 😂
@@BrianHikesAllDay i do love you!
The fact you climbed up the slide to put a camera, then down and back up again is crazy
I 100% climbed the Slide twice for this video
Holy crap, that camera angle at 13:23... my jaw just dropped. The way the camera is looking straight down at the two of you guys, looking like ants climbing up... that's just incredible! I know cameras never capture steepness with the same level of awe and terror as the way it looks in person, so I can only imagine how much adrenaline you got from setting the camera and then climbing DOWN from that spot so you could get the footage of climbing past. That... is freaking awesome. 👏👏
Hahahahaah spider man
@@BrianHikesAllDay For real!! 😁😁
People have no idea the lengths and effort I go through to put a beautiful contact that’s enjoyable for people to watch.
Actually, it looks considerably less steep in real life - and in my photos of the same sections.
I think you’re crazy lol. It’s as steep as in the video. Horizon is always level
Another great video!! I am slowly getting over my fear of heights... Just did my first bald summit this week, hurricane and this intense to watch! Stay safe!
Awesome video! Thanks for all of the great content you put up. I've been doing some research on this slide to possibly do it next year. Your video sure has some great footage in it. Thank for all of the extra work to double climb most of that!
Hell yeah man. You have no Flippin idea how much work it takes to put some of these together. Lol and yup pretty much Climbing The Slides twice for the footage and camera staging. Trying to capture them as beautifully as I possibly can.
This was awesome thank you Brian
So glad you liked it
Slide Survival Boot Camp 💥💥💥
so sick
So far it’s my favorite slide. I absolutely love Mount Colden. I mean right on the other side of the mountain is Trap Dike.. Colden was blessed with a beautiful slides!
@@BrianHikesAllDay I've been inspired by you to start chasing down slides in the whites.
Unfortunately it’s going to be quite some time before I ever decide to go to the whites for slides. They’re just too far from home for a weekend trips. Adirondacks are pushing about the farthest I will drive for a weekend
The waterfall scrambling near the bottom and the herd path at the top both remind me of the T25s in the Great Gulf. How does the headwall of the Southeast Slide compare in steepness to, for example, the headwall of the Great Gulf or the climb up Six Husbands Trail?
There’s not even a comparison. Southeast Slide makes them all look and feel tame and easy
@@BrianHikesAllDay Yikes! And I thought Six Husbands was tough.
Love your climbs, always an adventure. Just wondering how you get footage of the two of you from a distance, either above you or below.
I climbed the slide twice to set up the camera all over the place. Up and down up and down up and down all around town. You get the jest. A tremendous amount of work to put these things together the way I do for the enjoyment of everyone who shares the same passion!
@@BrianHikesAllDay Wow! That's great!
Tons of footage on camera of me spider crawling down to get into position to climb again lol
What are those yellow shoes you’re wearing? La sportivas?
Altra Lone Peaks
What type of shoes are you using during most of your slide climbs?
Altra Lone Peak 6
How does this compare to the North Slide of the Tripyramids? Looks healthy in the video.
Most slides I’ve ever been on seemed flat and comparison to Southeast Slide.. there’s really no comparison to try pyramid slide it’s so different. Try pyramid slides like a boulder field where this is a flat slab
The only other slide I’ve ever climbed steeper than this is Redfield slide which is what my thumbnail is from
@@BrianHikesAllDay that was a sick video, I knew it was serious when you said you avoided part of the slide the first time you did it. Did you use the Lone Peak 6 shoes the whole time or did you use something else as well?
I have used my lone Peak 6 on everything now. Even on Redfield Slide where I was damn near climbing a vertical wall. I’m finding them to have phenomenal grip
@@BrianHikesAllDay that's awesome to hear, I'm running Lone Peak 5 that are getting worn out so I'm going to have to upgrade. You went right up that slide with those.
More tongue!!
How would you compare it to the Plane slide?
Makes the airplane slide seem very easy and timid.
Yall should be wearing helmets.. cool vid!
Thanks so much! Some slides I could definitely see the need for a helmet but not on one like this where it’s literally a slide with no loose rubble to kick down. I also have rules when I’m climbing slides with other people. No one below another person Climbing to avoid any rocks being rolled down into somebody else
I wore my helmet there this past weekend. Brian, you say this is harder than the Airplaine slide on Wright ? I have that one to do maybe next.
