So here's my two cents - or two dollars, since I always go on and on - 1. Season 2 IS pretty good. Many people felt a let down because S1 is close to perfect, and we had a 2+ year wait over which the hype kept on building. I feel by watching them back to back you guys will enjoy it more. 2. There is plenty of violence, WHAAAT ? Who on earth thinks the violence level dropped, they are crazy. 3. One key problem is the pacing - S1 was so tight because the whole story was contained within Mirzapur. In S2 the action is split between as many as 6 towns, and its not clear exactly who is where and when. Sometimes weeks or months go by between episodes, and sometimes the whole episode is only a few hours. Its not always clear. 4 The BIGGEST problem with the season however is the new characters who are introduced. Only one, Sharad Shukla (son of Rati Shankar) is outstanding, and he hits every scene out of the park. The actress who plays Shabnam is fine, but all her scenes are 1-on-1s with Guddu and Golu who are outstanding so she feels a bit amateur. But the new S2 characters are just awful. I won't go into details (no spoilers) but they don't feel like real people, but actually characters written for TV. Like they all have catchphrases and unique dress styles and only talk in quips. So in a sharp contrast to S1, the people feel less "real" and it doesn't feel like I am watching normal people thrown into a crazy situation, it feels like I am watching a scripted TV show. If that makes sense. 5. End of S1 sets up a perfect storyline - Tripathis ascendant, Pandits on the run, and Shukla being a wildcard. Instead of that, we expand with two entirely new storylines. One is fine, but the other (Full of unnecessary stunt casting) is completely extraneous. And because of the stunt casting we spend too much time with them. So instead of a tight narrative the story feels meandering and bloated at times. Hot Take - this storyline SHOULD HAVE BEEN KEPT FOR SEASON 3, and not shown up here. 6. Munna. Sigh. The writing does take a huge 180 - I think its because TV writers are always afraid to make a popular character too dark and so they try to redeem them somehow. Yes even in S1 he is spoilt and immature but he is also cruel and selfish. He didn't just kill Bablu and Sweety, he ENJOYED killing them and making the injured Guddu watch it. That's torture. You can't suddenly take that character and start re writing him as if he is just a misunderstood little boy. So the character feels a bit inconsistent in parts. But its still a fantastic show and I enjoyed watching (almost) every minute of S2 - its just not AS good as S1, but pretty great and Im sure you guys will love it.
Thanks so much for your thoughts on season 2. We are going in with open eyes but a few community members have pre-warned us not to expect the same as season 1.
