So I did character creation yesterday, and my DM was super accommodating for my endgame concept and my willingness to build to it, not expecting it entirely. Long story short, a German Netrunner went into a decade and a half of solitude, building a schematic for a full chrome conversion. His wife was a casualty of a turf war, and while his children survived, his Son blames him, and his Daughter understands that he couldn't do anything to help and doesn't fault him in the slightest. His endgame goal is to become a cybernetic werewolf with an on board, anti personelle Cyberdeck to act as a neigh indestructible guard dog for his children and their estate. Strangely, he has made no friends and made no enemies in his line of work. I'm beyond excited to play him!
Just wrapped up a Call of Cthulhu campaign and am taking the very earliest steps preparing to run a Cyberpunk Red one later this year. The core book (while thorough) is a lot to take onboard so this kind of summary is super useful. Thank you!
@@XPLovecat Still a way off on that front; maybe helping protect a smaller company from extortion/threats by a much bigger one. Something simple while I've still got the training wheels on! I've a few stub ideas but figured I'd get my head around more of the game systems and more detailed lore before I start planning in earnest. Once again, thanks for the helpful videos!
Funny thing is CP Red is a more thematically organized CP 2020 book so that once you are immersed in it, you semi intuitively know where things are in the book that you need. I recommend for players looking to start is to begin building their characters as a group - establishing some preknowledge of each other and the social dynamics - and then depending on how experienced players are, start the first session immediately after the first player finishes their character and the player and GM have had time to clarify details. Ideally the first player is the one with the least experience so you can warm them up to the RPG, the setting, and get them comfortable with their character.
The lifepath was a lot of fun to go through. Especially when you roll for enemies and tragic love affairs, it helps bring the character to life in the context of the setting!
Really enjoy the format and presentation. Well done! Very helpful too! I couldn't find it anywhere but if you have it I'd love to see live use of the netrunning deck. Doesn't seem to be any vids about so far.
Thank you, I'm so glad you found it helpful. I love your idea to review the netrunning deck and show it used. I will add that to my list for the near future.
The media didn't shatter my plans in a particular short story. The one who ruined my plans was the rockerboy. The guy schmoozed with the client, sent his groupies to investigate for him (i punished for it by his fans stupidly alerting the mob boss they were investigating; the boss gtfo-ed). Literally half the social encounters i prepared were for naught 😭😭😭
Thank you for walking me through the character creation. My friend group is starting a campaign and invited me but they have way more knowledge and exposure than I do and I hate to bother them all the time for info. Appreciate this video greatly.
Great video! I really love character creation in red, but I have to use a digital character chart because the maths get quite convoluted with every step
My only advice is trust that the players will almost always do something you didn't prepare for so remember, prep. is good but improvisation is king. Good luck 🍀
I really hope I can play the table top again some day as I made my characters costume IRL a few years ago and decided to work on it again after the Netflix show came out.
@@XPLovecat I’ll be posting the costume for a contest I’m in this weekend so I’ll be sure to send you the link on my channel. This year I put a fog machine in it.
I just have the cyberpunk jumpstart and I really liked but I have hear negative things of the core book (specially compared with the cyberpunk 2020 edition). Is that deserved?
There are some confusing parts of the core book, but I think overall it is worth picking up. It adds depth to the lore of the universe, which I appreciate since that is a main focus of the system. This video might help you decide: ua-cam.com/video/K_YS4KmlOHs/v-deo.html
@@XPLovecat Oh yes, it was really excellent and funny, we finished our first scenario where all PC met :) For next ones, I'll create different scenarios related to their background and motivations :)

I've got the cyberpunk red corebook coming, I wanna check it out and learn it, but I know I need other things. Any suggestions as to what add-ons I should also get to help my first campaign run a little more smoothly would be great! Things like the data screen which I know I will need, but other things like the net running deck etc. Etc. Eventually I'll get into mats and minis, but I really wanna be able to run the game smoothly. Also, I'm very open to online groups/community's that play. So suggestions there would be great as well.
Hi Chris, like you mentioned the data screen is really helpful during play. The netrunning deck makes that portion of the game feel more interactive for everyone at the table so it is nice to have, but not necessary. I would recommend you check out the R. Talsorian website as they have a bunch of really great free DLC for the game: rtalsoriangames.com/downloads/ As for playing online, I personally don't do so often, but I have heard good things about the Neon Red discord group. I hope this helps and have fun gaming!
Hey! Amazing video, it was amazing to be able to develop the character with you, so fun! 😆
It was fantastic working with you. Thank you so much for helping me bring Freya Li to life!

I haven't played Cyberpunk Red, but I love character creation in earlier versions. The Life Path system really works well.

Thanks for this. A buddy is running a campaign and invited me to join. I want to learn beforehand to speed things up. Appreciate the info..
My favourite page (after the Night market appendix) is p.42 which shows every step of character creation!
