I find these videos very thought-provoking and useful. Not the typical run-of-the-mill video. Thanks for thinking outside-the-box when creating videos. I have been very sensitive to current and forecasted census of the books I am now willing to pursue. I am now selling many of my key grails that have higher (and ever increasing) census counts. I would never invest in a 9.9 or 10 right now when prices are inflated because we know more of the same graded books are coming. Too much value risk right now.

So your saying a manufactured artificial scarcity grading system built on a very subjective mirage of grades on the high end is potentially somewhat scamy and can potentially provide survivor benefits to some individuals over others. I'm shocked. Inconceivable.
I'm sure they will fix any concerns in due time. In fact you could even say the fix is in.

Great video. Two comments/questions. 1) Remember the amp that goes to "11'" in SPINAL TAP? Comparative grading feels like the precursor of CGC in 5 years creating a new "11" grade like an 11 volume on an amp ("Well, it's 1 louder than 10, see what I mean?" "Yeah, but why don't you just make 10 louder?" "Because we have 11."). 2) Whether or not the Wolverine submission was a collection of existing, cracked-out 9.8s or just someone's never- opened, pristine stack (of which I am sure there are many from the 1980s for similarly notable books), your points about the effects of comparative grading (a potential new business model and impact on values), are spot on, but you didn't really say anything explicit about comparative grading itself. Seems it should be expressly called out as effectively undermining 20 years of non comparative grading, and it may be more problematic than the reholder scandal. (I am now almost entirely focused on Golden Age, where CGC is less compromised. Less.)

As a collector, I find this extremely disturbing. Our hobby is becoming big business as opposed to what it should be, a love of our books and an appreciation of the art, artists and writers. My collection is high end, but I cannot spend my time obsessing over spine ticks and blunted corners. I treasure my 9.8 books and would not buy a 9.9 on principle alone. Especially now.

great video - another piece of evidence that CGC grades are more arbitrary than anyone wants to accept. Those were all 9.8's... now, they're 9.8's, 9.9's and 10.0. The grades are nonsense. I am not upset - and don't care if this impacts the 9.8 values since I don't buy into the greater fool scheme - and those that do are using their own money, so it's really not my business or concern.

I honestly don't understand how they even get it with all the inconsistency of cgc graders. Your grade is in the hands of the one person looking at the books who has a totally different point of view than other people. I sent two of the exact same copy of Wolverine 1 limited. One got a 9.6 and one got a 9.8 and I swear to God looking at them they are the exact same book same condition. That proves to me that cgc is very inconsistent and it really goes with who is doing the grading at the time. How sad for us little collectors so happy about our collections and the books we aquire. Reminds me of Apple. It was about market share and new customers but when they tapped out on that, it became about products that don't last as long and you can't repair them yourself so revenue was from existing customer purchases. There's a set amount of old books so looks like this is just tapping into previously graded books as a larger source of their revenue. I've never had anything graded. Isn't a % of the FMV a part of the calculation on how much it costs to grade a book? So, if a book goes from a 9.8 to a 9.9 is the grading cost exponentially higher on a book like Wolverine 1?

I had a feeling this might be happening at around this time after the Giant Sized X-men 9.9 mess. I’ve been telling people, when asked my opinion, that CGC is basically resetting the bar and there will be some correction to come as a result.
I won’t go all doom and gloom as CGC isn’t going anywhere, and will still be the gold standard, but in the short term, I would agree it’s very concerning if you own some of these books and intend to sell/buy them anytime soon.

Interesting business model. Every now and then something in comic books comes up where there is a clear hack/exploit in which someone makes bank. You have just identified several examples. No doubt, Sgt. Skeevie is sharpening his/her/their combat knife right now. All a bit reminiscent of those vidies Bry used to make about trading in the curve for MCU books. For a time $$$ were to be had fosho. But now? Curve has gone flat. No one but no one cares much about MCU. Disney + has gone - and all we get is some cheesy animation that everyone loves because they are starving for just one just one ounce of mana. No doubt same forces will apply to the 9.9 prescreen strategy that will turn it over night into the 9.6 prescreened tragedy - at least for some. Interesting as always to hear your perspective and thanks for all the fun!🎉😊❤

I personally cap out a comics potential value at a 9.8.
I see you additional value for 9.9 or 10, mostly because if you crack any 9.9 or 10 and resubmit it, odds are it will come back a 9.8.
CGC has very little grading consistently. Nearly any CGC book will fluctuate up or down a graded over and over again when resubmitted.

I don’t remember if any had them. I was focused on the grade.

Having to do comparitive grading makes me think cgc doesn't really have a standard for what a 9.9/ 10 actually looks like

Have saved myself a ton of cash (which I then put into other books - LOL) over the decades by not buying 9.8's. Won't be buying 9.9's or 10's either.

We need Marvel to get into the slab game. That will at least give us a book from the press to a slab

Not as rare as they were now that CGC has lowered the bar.

So is this a cautionary video to warn people or a cheat code video?

    • @AutomaticComics

A little of both I guess. I don’t hold anything against anyone for doing this. If they want to take the gamble and see if it pays off, they’re welcome to do it.

I don't think it's cheating if it is within the rules. But I agree that the "rules" should be changed to, e.g., no comparative grading.

Never bought higher than 9.4 so don't bother me but if tou paid premium for 9.8s that's gonna hurt
