The Engineer that stopped just short of a flock of deer: Big thank you. For I know how hard that is to do, After Driving 18 wheelers for 35 years pulling 79,000 plus, you cannot stop for wildlife, they become victims of the road and rails too. But the wildlife in these videos are a treat as well as sunsets and snow trains, to the video staff of Virtual Railfan, I salute each one of you for a terrific job done in these videos shown each day, God Bless you all.
The fact that they pushed back into the yard likely means they were doing shunting operations. Shunting operations are usually done at relatively slow speeds for the safety of workers who have to couple and uncouple rolling stock. It would therefore be relatively easy for a train to come to a halt in a shorter distance than it would be if the train was a consist at track speed or on it's way to somewhere.
When I was 8 or 9, I was on the Capitol Limited and my father and I were in the dome car (this is before it was re-equipped with Superliners) with the conductor somewhere east of Pittsburgh at night and the train stopped middle of nowhere without a signal visible. Conductor called forward and turned out the train had hit a deer and the engine crew was needing to clean the lights and windshields because they couldn't see.
There is a video from the cab of CP train in northern Ontario, posted a few years ago, that showed the train running over a herd of deer trying to run away from train in the snow. You could hear the train crew shouting and hoping the deer would run away on the left or right rather than trying to outrun the train. The video was horrific and caused a lot of controversy in Canada. CP had to explain that the train could not be stopped since it was going uphill, if I remember correctly. Also, CP mentioned that the policy indicate trains cannot stop for wild life.
