  • Hey guys, today's the big comparison day : i'm playing the A part of Misty, the great Erroll Garner standard on 8 vintage high end acoustic archtops :
    -1936 Epiphone Deluxe
    -1937 Epiphone Deluxe
    -1938 Epiphone Deluxe
    -1939 Epiphone Emperor
    -1946 Epiphone Deluxe
    -1934 Gibson L5
    -1978 Guild Artist Award
    -1942 D'Angelico Excel
I'm using the same pick on all (purple Dunlop 0.71) and they all have bronze strings except the Guild AA that has nickel round 13s, and the Epiphone blonde Deluxe 38 that has flats 13s. The sound is recorded with a Neumann TLM 103.
Feel free to comment and share your thought, although it's hard when there are so many to compare (it's like comparing 8 perfumes in a shop, you loose your nose after 3 or 4). If you want to hear a full song on each guitar, check the channel, all the guitars are featured there, with at least one full song.
My opinion is that they all are great archtops, with each its own specific voice. I can't tell that one is significantly worse.. I like the fact that the emperor has a very profound sound, although in the recording it can feel a little dark sounding compare to the 17 inches. I like the punch and dryness of the 16 inches L5. I love the fact that Epiphone Deluxes have a lot of air in the sound.. i like the cowbow metal sound from the 46.. i like the balance of the 36. I love the woodyness of the 38 blonde.. i love the 37, that is a mix between the 36 and the 46. I like the Guild in the sense that it still sounds a lot for a cutaway guitar, most of the cutaways i've tried were far from the non cuts, when played acoustically, this one isn't. And finally i love the complexity of the D'angelico, sooo elegant.

I watched it and I waited, and waited...and you saved the best for last! That blonde Deluxe can't be beat. The D'angelico really showed why they're such sought after instruments as well. The tone is phenomenal. All of these sound great. The L-5 is a different beast from the rest, and it just sounds different. Not worse or better in my opinion. Just different. All of them sound great with you playing! Thanks for posting these comparisons; they're my favorite videos! Helps me decide what I need in my arsenal... ha!

The blonde Deluxe and the 1937’ Deluxe were pretty amazing with bit more presence. -It’s So difficult to judge such an array of superb Arch tops. -That Early 30s 16” L-5 was amazing though. The DAngelico’ had buttery sweet tone. Kudos to your great playing 👍awesome Vid

All superlative but there was something more to the D'Angelico with the Rhythm Chief.

I had to listen through twice they all sounded great, and its at least close To Romaines. The 37 epi was mellower than the 36 but to me he may have been picking easier than the 36. The 39 emperor was nice. Then rounded out by the L-5 and the D’angelico. As always you bring beautiful music to the table. E

Blindfold test the 16” L-5 sounded the worst, I would be happy to buy it from you. 🤣

Such a wonderful resource, I can’t thank you enough. Was there one that you most enjoy playing?

The Epi's definitely had more aggressive projection, just the opposite of the sweet and more subtle D'Angelico. The Guild was somewhere in the middle. I really liked the 1936 Epiphone Deluxe. Very nice collection and playing of Misty.

  • @IsaacSmelcZhan

Did you buy all of these? How? That D’Angelico and the L5 alone are expensive.
