Having Castlevania Adventure on the list especially so high and OVER Castlevania II Belmont’s Revenge makes this list questionable at best. I wouldn’t put too much stock in it.
@@TheLairdsLair they are objectively wrong. Castlevania Adventure is regarded as one of the worst entries in the series. I’d wager they didn’t know what they were voting for.
I owned a Game Boy for most of my childhood, and fondly remember playing some of the games on this list. I also remember there being a Game Boy comic book series in which the handheld was a portal between the real world and the Marioverse.
What can I say beyond just that the community has excellent taste. I didn't throw in my top 5 this time (or the past few times) because life just isn't being very kind so just haven't had the 'oomph' or time to think through a list with reasons. But, I'm glad to see that what I would probably list as my 5 favorites are already included here: Double Dragon, Motorcross Maniacs, Metroid 2, Link's Awakening, and Donkey Kong ('94). And, though not my favorites on the system, I have a soft spot for some of the old arcade ports and semi-sequels that I had (mostly thanks to my uncle buying me copies for birthdays/xmas etc): Pac-Man, Galaga/Galaxian, Centipede/Millipede, Mr. Do!, and the wonderful Burgertime Deluxe. Also, shout out to all of the great soundtracks on the GB, even those games that otherwise are terrible yet I would fire them up back in the day just to listen to the music (Mortal Kombat 1, Cutthroat Island's 2nd stage Spittolfield, etc).
I was impressed to see all those great Atari games you showed during your lead-up to the countdown. Those are some of my very favorite games. Even the Williams games Defender and Joust. I was first introduces to all these games in the arcades but was delighted to be able to get them for my Atari Home Computer. I moved on to more profitable pursuits like computer programming and desktop publishing by the late '80s and early '90s. I liked the portability of the Game Boy but I never imagined that it would still play so many of my favorite games. I first saw Tetris on a PC at work. That's the version I know and love. I'm glad it made #1 here because this is the version most people seem to remember.
C'mon! Mega Man II and both Castlevania games but no Gargoyl'es Quest?! 🤐 "IT CAN'T BE!" (by AVGN) Seriously, the Game Boy was my life back then. Recently got a damaged one with a replaced backlight screen, a cool addition indeed. After some little adjustments (all resoldered and cleaned), now it works flawlessly. It has been my very first repairing process on a retro console, what a satisfaction! DOT MATRIX CLUB FOREVER!! 💚
I would say pokemon red and blue are the same game as you need both to collect a full poke a dex .great video some brilliant games ...shame no alien vs predator last of his clan ❤❤
A good list. Pocket Bomberman should be in every 'greatest Game Boy' list, in my opinion. It's Bomberman as a side scrolling platform game and it's brilliant. A console version would have been great but it was 1996 (the beginning of 3D everything) so that never happened. Fortunately, it was remade a year later as a GBC version, so we can play that now on a big screen with emulation.
I want to say I received my first GameBoy in 95. It was a Play it Loud Green version. I got a Game Gear for Christmas a year before. So, I had a Game Gear first.
DKL is so underrated too, I always thought it just had remixed DKC worlds but then when I finally played and reached the scaffolding, city and cloud worlds 😮😮😮😮😮
I made the mistake to loan my 50+ cartridge collection to one of my brothers years ago... of course I never saw it back.... i don't talk to my brothers anymore....
I knew that my comment on Donkey Kong would make it! Hahaha... Not much surprised to see Tetris being the 1st place. It's an important version indeed. I'd like to know if Bionic Commando made its place somewhere in the top 40...
Got everything on this list, except Double Dragon (will in due time), and Pokemon, which I have no desire to own as I don't care for the series. By the way, Mega Man II is considered the GB's worst Mega Man game, Mega Man V is the one people seem to love the most, and I can see why, it's different to every other game on the GB, those that grabbed bosses from the NES games. But not MMV, it did it's own thing, even if Wiley is still at least the second to last boss of the game, and the whole Star Droids thing going for it.
I had the original kirbys dream land for gameboy new, when i bought it from toys r us for 30 dollars in the early 90s. I beat the game in 30 minutes lol then i discovered a hard mode lol
2:54 Was that Game Boy specifically designed just for this advert? Because I've never before seen one with that huge logo beneath the screen and the small Nintendo lettering bottom-left. Was that really a retail model in some region? Or did they just make it like that to emphasise the Game Boy name in the advert?
I not watched the video yet, but I must declare, DOnkey Long 94 is the #1 best Original gameboy game. It even has awesome super gameboy suport for that added a awesomeness. ANy other choice is wrong. #2 and 3 etc etc a combination of super mario land 2 and wario games int he next few slots, order may vary is fine for those base don personal prefeenwece.
It was impossible to read the quotes in this video on mobile 📱. You should have changed the colour to be something that would stand out like bright yellow against the black.
Those were both excellent games, and arguably the best RPG's on the system that were released in the west. This list is personally not valid without at least one of the two included.
Lol I can't help but crack up when I hear Donkey Kong lol 🤣 I'm a huge Larry Bundy Jr fan and I saw a video someone made that had things he put on his bum! 😅 It was a joke made in good fun and number 1 was Donkey Kong! Lol 🤣🤣🤣
@@TheLairdsLair lynx had better hardware but lynx had worse games than game gear and gameboy I do like desert strike , warbirds, batman on lynx but lynx had worse game library than even puke green gb
Hard disagree, the Game Boy had the likes of Konami, Capcom, Taito, and Square, not to mention Nintendo's offerings on the handheld, while Sega for a major portion of the GG's time, had games made mostly by Sega, and some smaller devs, though some Taito games were on it, but no Konami, Square, or Capcom, no thanks. Not to mention the GG ate through batteries like Pac-Man through dots, you spent more on batteries for the thing than you did for games.
Ahhhh the childhood memories of solar striker. What a game. Excellent video. Thank you.
Very surprised Gargoyle's Quest was not on this list to be honest
Gargoyles Quest was one of the first games I ever completed on the Gameboy surprised it didn’t make the list either.
Having Castlevania Adventure on the list especially so high and OVER Castlevania II Belmont’s Revenge makes this list questionable at best. I wouldn’t put too much stock in it.

I'm surprised as well!!! I should've remembered Gargoyle's Quest on my Top 5...!
Camp Deadly is awesome. Glad that was shown at the end!
What a great list! Thanks for sharing. Put a few on the list to buy that I haven't seen in many years.

You can download them, look for the Nintendo comics system collection. It's the Game Boy comics you're thinking of

I got a GB for Xmas in 1989 when in hit the USA. Comparing DK to Mario is night and day. DK looks amazing for the GB.
DKL is so underrated too, I always thought it just had remixed DKC worlds but then when I finally played and reached the scaffolding, city and cloud worlds 😮😮😮😮😮
Playing gameboy on the super game boy was a godsend. No motion blur and you could see everything. 🙂

I absolutely loved Metroid 2 Gameboy ! I remember playing it for hours on a vacation with my parents 😊
Yeah, I haven't watched the video yet, but Metroid 2 better be on there!
I binged Motocross Maniacs for hours at a time as a kid.
I'd put Mole Mania somwhere in the top 5, and both Solomon's Club and Catrap in my top 10.
I knew that my comment on Donkey Kong would make it! Hahaha... Not much surprised to see Tetris being the 1st place. It's an important version indeed. I'd like to know if Bionic Commando made its place somewhere in the top 40...
Does anyone else pronounce Samus "same-us" ?
I always thought it was "Sam-us"
Regional dialect... It's like comparing Sean and Shawn.
Loved revenge of the gator and played it every chance i got

Speaking of dr mario for game boy, there is a very nice color hack of dr mario for gameboy that makes it easier to play.

Great list solar striker especially is an underrated gem
I totally agree!
Solar striker was my favourite growing up.
I had solarstiker in 1991 and it was a fun shooter
The release dates on mario land are backwards. But good vid
I am sad I forgot to vote. But I would have forgotten of Motocross Mania at 20... Which was better than most I would have voted for.
Prince of Persia was a great version on Gameboy.
should have put footage of DK94 from the later levels rather than the throwback levels.
DKL should have showed the world based on DK arcade as hardly anyone even knows it has worlds not in any other DK.

I must say some decisions are really weird.
Also Kirby games never stopped
1 links awakening
2pokemon
3 donkey kong
4 super mario land 2
5centipede millipede
You should have named this video “The Top 20 🐐 Original Game Boy” in the same exact way that I typed it in, with the goat emoji.
I played a lot of Tetris on my friend's Gameboy
Tetris is a genius pack in for game boy, when it was released in 1989.

No idea, sorry
Huh. That's a strange list. I guess that being poll-based, it was bound to skew toward top sales instead of necessarily the actual best games.
Well I might not have made it into the top 20 but at least 2 of the ones I wrote made it into the intro sequence 😂
And I put them there because they are some of my personal favourites! So great work!
Wow, I had 14 of the 20 games listed.... sad...

Turtles fall of the foot clan is awesome. You can skip right to the technodrome right away lol

They were originally just that, but were totally unreadable. I tried lots of combinations actually before I settled on this.
Kirby needs to make a comeback? Kirby cames are still being made. Kirby's had no fewer than three major games on the Switch.
Ok, don't know how I'm not aware of them then!
Kirby’s Dream Land 2 not even on the list, SML2 under SML1, Castlevania 1 on the list at all? This is some grade A bullcrap and no mistake.
I'm surprised neither Final Fantasy Legend II or III made the list.
I don't think either got more than a couple of votes.
I enjoyed both those. But, competing with the likes of Tetris. I imagine they're quite down the list. Both bangers nevertheless.
