- From June 6, 1986, the 6pm Eyewitness News with Bill Beutel and John Johnson. Johnson was the fill-in for Kaity Tong, who went on maternity leave a few weeks prior. Kaity herself was the replacement for Roger Grimsby, who was unceremoniously dumped on April 17.
Whatever the case, this pairing obviously made some sort of impression, because by 1987, Johnson was paired with Beutel on a shortened 6pm Eyewitness News.

Though from the UK and never visited the US, this is a class act. So modern for the time and with some tweaks the re-recorded ‘Cool Hand Luke’ theme would work today. The vision mixing and timing of the presenters is incredible, considering technology wasn’t as advanced as now. This is a better job than you’d see in 2020 and must have taken a lot of hard work and professionalism by the WABC team.
It was in the media capital of the world. It had to be like this. In fact, all the networks were like this. ABC, NBC, CBS, and even the subnetwork news, WOR (channel 9 for anyone living in Metro New York), and WPIX (channel 11) also had news just like this and sometimes, better.
1986 would mark the debut of the standard WABC Eyewitness News logotype that we all now and love.
I miss those days when WABC-TV had the circle 7 logo but it’s too bad that from 1999-present it’s always been ABC 7.
Some years later, that same logotype would also be used on WBZ, Channel 4 in Boston for their *Eyewitness News* broadcasts.

Bill Beutel was always a class act, but it was never the same after they fired Mr. Grimsby. I don't think the full story has ever come out, but IIRC one of the producers simply hated him and finally had enough. Too bad. It was always fun to watch to see what off the cuff comment he would make.
WABC's then-news director, Bill Applegate, sure had it in for Grimsby - in spades.
11 or 12 minutes in... a story about Donald Trump and his setting up the ice rink.
At the time, who knew what else was in the offering over 30 years afterwards...?

And he finished the rink ahead of schedule and under budget. His foundation still runs it though I read somewhere they removed his name from some signage since he became president.
Eli Zarett worked at WDIV in Detroit came to WABC to return to Detroit at then CBS/ WJBK in Detroit.
My parents grew up watching this.

Almost a full 90 seconds in, Mr. Glaser mentions valium and pentothal(sic?); just a little while ago, I was watching clips about the Elvis cover-up from the 1979 *20/20* program, and I think these two were part of the list of drugs found in his system some 40 years back.

This was aired on the same day the first “My Little Pony: The Movie” came out, everyone was watching the news on WABC-TV (channel 7).
It also features a segment on the closing of Gimbels department store and it wasn’t as popular as Macy’s were.
Plus, a segment on the upcoming “Liberty Weekend” which was about to happen.
