The 2022 Mazda MX-30 Is Mazda’s First Step Towards Electrification
Вставка
- Опубліковано 4 сер 2024
- While @MazdaUSA has been well known for offering vehicles that are more premium and fun-to-drive over its rivals, the company has been pretty far behind on electrification. For 2022, the #MazdaMX30 is the brand's first-ever dip into the electric space. The 2022 #MX30 offers up to 100 miles of range and 143 HP from its single motor powering the front wheels. To make the MX-30, #Mazda took the #CX30 and removed the engine and replaced it with a battery and electric motor. The range is paltry by today's standards, but its nice to see Mazda dip their toes into the electric space.

You can’t win them all, right? The MX-30 is a cute first attempt at going electric for Mazda and while we applaud them for doing the engineering in-house. The only reasons we see people buying these are for the insanely affordable lease deals and you really love the design and Mazda’s. This is a stop-gap until Mazda scalable EV architecture is ready but the company has committed to going electric and we’ll have lots of new EV’s from them by 2025.
Thank you for keeping the context in mind. So many people are thinking this represents Mazda's view of electric and it is so not the case. It is a proof of concept. In the coming years Mazda will actually build an architecture around electric vehicles vs. having to fuse them with an ICE architecture.
I feel bad for the dealers that have to try to sell this
Customer: how many miles does it have.
Dealer: It has 4 seats, two wipers and charges at home.
Customer: oh ok.
Me: LOL.
@@teadott lmao
Not in today’s market dealerships are struggling with inventory with barely any cars coming in even with the bad specs this would sell
😂
Can’t wait for the 149 per month lease deals LMAO
Seriously->100 miles range?? That’s a golf car territory.
so true
A true city cruiser. I live in Texas so road tripping to the next city in this is would be impossible.
The straight pipes posted this at the same time but chose this channel first
This car would be a great product in 2011 not 2021. 100 mile range is laughable in 2021. Did Mazda not noticed Tesla’s shortest range model 3 had a range of 250+ miles.
If this car only costs under 20K, then it’s not too bad, but it’s not, it’s probably over 30K. Edit: holyshit, just saw the price on AoA, 33K for this? If you can’t get full tax credits, no way you should get this.
Did you also notice the price tag on model 3
@@rockbob2024 36k for over double the range
@@anonymousguy6928 more like over 40k
1/2 baked idea. Put it back in the oven until you get 300+ range.
Even 200, but 100 is absurd for this price.
The first Mazda in years I wouldn't happily drive.
This is not a Mazda
The interior is doing a lot of heavy lifting here
Weird way to say the interior is nice....
@@attackroflchopter4403 Because it’s the only thing nice about it
I believe the range is low on purpose. It makes for a less expensive electric car with a smaller battery and less charge time from 0 to full.
This is more of a city car for people that have short commutes back and forth to work and will likely charge it overnight every day. I actually believe this is smart because not everyone needs 300 miles range a day on a charge. And not everyone want to pay Tesla prices for an electric car with more range than they need.
People need to get over their “range anxiety”. It’s like complaining that a Mini Cooper doesn’t have enough towing capacity for your 5th wheel trailer.
I don't think it looks bad but the fact that you have to make sure you close one door before the other or it could damage it plus the limited range and acceleration speed makes this car feel like it shouldn't be production ready.
The door thing isn't an issue at all. It's basically for someone who wants a coupe but carries people in the back the odd time. Trucks have been like this for awhile. I have a super cab, and it's never once been complained about or an issue
Yea they should most definitely start with hybrids. Literally what is the purpose of this car?
To say, " hey guys we're going electric too, lmao 🤣😂" here's your whole 100 mile range
@@truckercowboyed2638 it's a compliance car.
I think it’s meant to be the luxury city EV I guess 🤷♂️
It is a city car. Not that complicated. For a city car a 100 miles is enough, and it should be cheaper to buy.
A blown up version of a toy car
Ouch. What a letdown in so many ways. I don’t see this thing selling well even here in Cali.
Is this like a demo car…. If this a production car it a very sad car. 30k+ for this car, it this some kind of joke.
Agreed. Surprised Mazda didn't try to contract with another car company to rebadge one of their EV's instead of shoveling this turd out the door. Seems like it would have cost them less to just get into negotiations with GM or Nissan to restyle/rebadge their Chevy Bolt or Leaf than to develop this embarrassment.
@@Stressless2023 Mazda partnerd up with Toyota.
The fact that it is only sold in California seems very compliance car
It will be offered in other states too, just initially only in California.
We don’t want this car 🤣
The huge price, tiny range, lack of horsepower, I'm guessing this is a brand new Mazda engineering team's first go at a car and they did the best they could
🤣
It screams 'hey, look, we're doing something different.' Mazda just doesn't have the resources.
It feels like a temporary compliance car and will likely be replaced by a plug in hybrid next year.
The Rivian showing up mid-review is like going on a date and your date meets someone they are clearly more into than you.
This is the stupidest attempt at an EV I've seen. It'll be canceled in a single model year and will be reviewed by Doug Demuro in 10 years for being quirky and rare
Facts
My man….your bids with your camera (not self filmed) are just epic! Best in the game
Not bad for a first electric and hopefully they will be blowing pur minda with the newer versions!! Also thanks for the bloopers and humor!! I watched it all from start to finish with no desire to fast forward!! Keep up the good work!!!
I do own a Mx-30 and it drives great! 200k one charge enough for where I live in algarve, and I charge it at home usually, I wish it had longer range and title more room in back seats... Car drives great and feels like a more expensive car.
How do you get 200k out of a vehicle only rated at 160k? Are you always going downhill?
@@OMGWTFLOLSMH district where I live speed limit is 80kph and if I drive at speed limit I can get 200k . with easy driving...
Another excellent thorough review. I had an Element for 13 yrs and the door same door setup was never a problem.100 miles of range, though, makes me think a restyled old leaf.
I have one on my Sonoma and it's a royal PITA. Not to mention I've hit my head on the striker for the 3rd door because of GM's atrocious design. That reminds me, I'm going to sell that POS. Never again will I buy a car with suicide doors or a product from Genital Motors.
LACK OF POWER LACK OF RANGE .. LACK OF TRYING????
I like the way this sounds when you drive it. This crossover is gonna be sweet once they mate the rotary range extender with it. I may ponyup for one.
As a Mazda owner, I would seriously consider one of these if they had a long range AWD model with 250+ miles of range... I really dig the size, quirkiness, and premium interior. Wondering if you're able to mount a roof rack and how the reliability is going to look.
I'm the owner of a 2023 Mazda MX-30 GS as my first EV because I like the look & finish and the way it handles. Price wise, it's pretty good as Mazda offers a 4000$ rebate and another 12000$ in rebates from the federal & provincial governments (Quebec, Canada). I have to say I use it as a second vehicle to do all my shopping/groceries/meetings etc... all within 40 km from my house and I won't use it during winter time (October 31 to may 01). I understand the range is said to be 160 km but I've done more than 180 km on rural roads & city roads and it was showing15% left! But if you're looking for a primary vehicle for all year around including long trips, you should consider an EV with a 360 km minimum range knowing that in winter time when it's really cold (-20c +), you'll be using "heating/heated seats/heated streering etc..." which will have a negative impact on the range (minus 40% +) and it will take longer to charge. 😊 I forgot to mention, my average is 16 kwh/100 km.
Actually in Norway price after tax deduction is around 28k USD for top spec. So it was no brainier for us, other words we’re happy owners from a month now. But for clarification this is second ev in family. Thank you for video 😀
You have almost one million subs! Rivian just doesn’t want your honesty if they haven’t called you to drive it yet…all those goons who drove the Rivian already did such commercial reviews…. I can’t wait till you get you hands on that one….show no mercy!
Salute to the first gen Mx-30 owners paving the way for people waiting until they get better specs
Lmao
Beautiful car, range is awful, add a 100 miles or so to it and it would be very enticing
Love the new Intro. Sofyan. Looked very Star Wars-y
Needs AWD and more Range... Which I'm sure will come.. Question is, why not bring it out NOW?!?!?!? Instead of incrementally????
No thanks Mazda. This is 2021, not 2011 and I would much rather buy similarly priced Kona EV with 250-260 miles of range, if not Tesla or the upcoming Kia EV6 or Hyundai Ioniq5
It doesn’t look like Mazda is even trying to compete at this stage… Seems like a test vehicle for their upcoming electric line up. Hopefully in a couple of years things will get more interesting.
so 100miles tops a charge.
perfect for my work-home travel routine. with a distance of 40miles roundtrip
but this will not be ideal for long and unplanned multiple trips.
Would you support a hybrid long range cx9 with around 30mpg
When is it getting the rotary range extender?
"Give us a touchscreen." I agree 100%.
That dial might work okay, but CarPlay and Android Auto are specifically designed for touch inputs. It's faster, safer, and less distracting. Complicated tasks can be completed faster with touch.
Wow 100 miles, not for the long distances out here in the western US where cities can be at least that apart with chargers
Wow!!!!! I Totally Love The Design & Interior Of This Mazdas First EV, But It Needs More Range For Longer Road Trips In Several States, Very Good Review On The Mazdas First EV Bro.
This is the first EV that i actually find the sound it makes when accelerating is nice.
Yea even tho they say it’s not, this is definitely a compliance EV like this vehicle makes no sense at all
Mazda is super late to the table with this half-baked electro-wagon, and no amount of marketing spin is going to save it. I predict it's gone in its present form in less than a year.
They need to take the AC controls and gear shifter and put it into all of the cars
Listen, I’m a Mazda fan but oh my god this is not a good looking car at all.
Yeah aside from the pathetic range all the unpainted plastic cladding everywhere kills this thing for me.
Same 0-60 as the original RX-7.
I’m a 2015 soul owner. Just bought it a few months ago, under $15K OTD. This car is laughable. Yes, the soul is 9.2s, but my goodness this is a lazy attempt. Anyone who can live with 90-100 miles with don’t want this. The EV part IS compliance vehicle, I don’t care what Mazda says, but the range extended version has a lot of potential in my mind I’d they pull their head out of their ass and have it around the 35K mark. 40K top dollar OTD. Otherwise, consumers will just buy Tesla, maybe even ford.
Loved your review as usual! Mazda has an inexpensive small battery pack and a small single electric motor in this EV, so I just can't see where the expense of this EV is coming from in a $40,000 vehicle. Most EVs have 2.5 to 3 times the battery so I can almost see the expense for them, but for a just over 30kwh battery and small motor in the Mazda???? I love Mazda but this vehicle is wayyyyyy overpriced and under thought.
Mazda's infotainment controls are the best! Don't need a touch screen full of finger prints that reflect the sun. The controls are very easy to get used to but I understand that since you jump from one car to the next you don't get the chance to get used to them.
Love this car, perfect as a second car for daily comute, fun to drive, and very high quality.
Just got this car today. Great addition to the garage and will be used for daily drive. Range too low but interior is great. So far love it.
Hey man how is it holding up?
Mazda and genesis two brands that have been killing it right now have abysmally failed with their first entries into the ev realm. But as they always have we can have hope that they will learn from their mistakes
The GV60 is solid though
Mazda should’ve saved their design budget for something more desirable by consumers
Allow me to give a sales forecast for this model: 0 retails. On the fast track to bankruptcy. Zoom-zoom
Love Mazdas (own one and have owned at least 4 others) but this is a hard pass for the price with the limited range. Not a fan of the suicide doors either, and needs AWD too.
Just why Mazda!!!🤦♂️
Am not familiar to this new design language.
2010 Nissan leaf called. it wants its battery back
😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣
I've never seen so many negative comments on a car. 👎 Mazda!
Considering the price compare to other EVs you compared it with, it’s really a nice car. I have also done my research which means according to my need I will only have to charge it one time a week which is not bad. So, you don’t have to go for range when you don’t need.
Literally, the physical representation of putting your toe in the pool to test the water before jumping in. Mazada is def checking to see if there's a market for an EV with their badge. Zipcar will have some new fleet vehicles on the way.
Foot in the door
My goodness that back seat area. My soul had, or at least looks like it’s way more.
Very Nice Bro!
The cork looks cool, but will get filthy. The recycled fabric like material on the window sills where your outboard arm will rest will also get dirty and show wear. I like the look of the interior and the controls and that there's no piano black. I like the exterior shape of the vehicle, but as in the cx-30 there's just so much plastic. Performance seems utilitarian, but the limited range is anything but. This is a placeholder while Mazda comes up with a more useful platform.
Mazda just doesn't have the R&D that their main competitors do. You can see that with the lack of hybrid vehicles in their lineup. The MX-30 is going to be a tough sell.
At the price-point Mazda is going for ($30k+), I'd doubt these sell at all... Would be shocked if more than a few hundred get sold before this thing is discontinued.
This should’ve never made production. This is for somebody who don’t plan on leaving their city at all. 100 miles of range is so 2011
I really love Mazda but this is a huge disappointment especially compared to the kia ev6 and Hyundai ioniq 5

Personally I love that they don't have a touch screen for their infotainment. The wheel is super intuitive, took me about a day to use to mine. Feel like it would take longer to have muscle memory of touching specific locations on the screen and you're still going to have to look at it. I don't even look at my wheel or my screen I just know it and I can feel it. Said they added another screen for the climate controls the old climate controls look very classy these still look great but the more screens the more expensive they are to fix.
They can do both. Should’ve done both instead forcing folks to use something they don’t want to
It works awful for Apple car play which most people use
@@MrOscar5690 they could of done both but then the screen wouldn't be in an optimal position to glance had. You would have to actually turn your head taking your eyes off the road for longer. I feel like people have hard enough time paying attention when they drive. I see so many people staring at their phones while driving it's insane.
I wouldn't be surprised if they ban touch screens in cars at some point. That's not me saying they should I just wouldn't be surprised if it happened
@@Siggfuggggg2000 I see, apple needs to get it together and optimize their software lol I'm jp.
I use AA and when going from my Subaru with touch and my Mazda with the wheel the Mazda is a much better experience, I find myself have to touch areas 2 or 3 times to say pause music or search something. With Mazda it's 3 clicks to the right and a push down (depending on the screen I am on) and I don't even have to look at anything.
And not go be argumentative but I think android is the largest mobile OS. Its in the 70 percentile.
@@andinicpon4743 I think it’s closer to 50% of people use iPhone, but pretty much everyone I know uses it so it seems more like 80% from my perspective.....but I’ve used both touch pad, scroll wheel, and touch screen and I think the best option is to have touch screen and a scroll wheel because there are certain functions that are easier with one or the other
No wonder Tesla is hiking their prices 😂😂
Almost like Mazda rushed this vehicle ...
really liked the interior design of the MX-30
luckily for me there is also a version in our market with the 2.0 Skyactiv G engine coupled to a fake hybrid... sorry, "mild" hybrid system.
But still, I'd be really worried about the longevity of the "sustainable" interior
I just placed an order for the 2022 CX5. Watching this video is making me think it may be the last Mazda I ever own. Lol
Wow they missed on every mark
The rims are nice!
Is there a cork fee ?
Until Mazda adds the REX, I don’t think they will sell that many.
I like how you review these cars as if you buying a new car.
100 mi of range, no touch screen... A perfect EV for 2021
This is a very interesting showcase of what they are aiming at with this and i bet they don't care how much they sell with this model ~ This is simply a shout out to let people know that they are ready to start on getting into EV world.
Wow. This is something that should be very cheap. You would have to be a certain kind of special to buy one. It's like what in the world was Mazda thinking. I will say it has the ability to be cool by either costing way less, or keep the cost the same and offer the power and range that every other manufacturer. I don't even like when my range gets below 100 miles in my gasoline car, so I couldn't even imagine the range anxiety on that!
This will be a lot more interesting when they add the rotary engine.
Dorito engine*
If this car is over 15K, it’s too expensive. There is a Chinese company called Wuling that came out with Wuling Hongguang mini EV, which is like 5K when converted into USD, which is much cheaper and still offers 100 miles of range, and sits four, and ever since it came out, it’s a hot seller in China.
It's crazy how far behind the Asian manufacturers are. I guess they didn't expect EVs to blow up since bikes and scooters are so popular in other countries.
I think this car should be at starting price of $15,000, and fully loaded near $20,000 considering the range and size of this vehicle
I think if this was like 18,000 dollars it wouldn’t be a bad deal. But the range isn’t good, its very slow, and the backseats are tiny.
If they sell one of these, they should promise to exchange it for free once the hybrid model comes out.
I don't how this all EV is going to work. I can see it working with dual electric and gas. I mean have you ever gased up at Costco?
Charging at 30 min or even 15 min is still too slow.
Yeah 30 mins of charging just get less than 100 miles of range is even more insulting.
Yea, this NEEDS to be under $30k and the range extender under $40k to be successful. I love the idea of range extender/PHEV with 100-200 miles of EV range, so that day to day you never really need gas, but on long trips you can get a good 100-200 miles on gas too, since gas is still faster than DCFC for now, and sadly is still much more widespread. Mazda is gonna learn quick that $35K is too much.
In other countries there's an option of a Mazda 3(Axela) hybrid
The button on the back of the driver seat to move the seat should be on the passenger seat, since the Japanese driver is on the right side the button is set up for cars in Japan.
Those buttons on the drivers seat screen disaster for safety. Especially if kids play with the buttons
Yeah, my 2015 Kia Soul EV has the same range basically, 34 less HP, and various model years of them go under 20k, this is already going to be a tough sell for me before even watching as I doubt this is $25k new
It's a shame they didn't give you their Red color. The white isnt doin it
Scary looking that back seat when opening the suicide doors - so cramped! Would look/feel a little spacious if the roof line is in bright color. It's a vanity mirror that mirror in the sun visor😁. Felt short this model w/ that lack of performance & range but then again it's the 1st 4 the brand & also the brand is not about performance. Still, that range need 2 b tripled otherwise ppl will get anxiety attack😙
I'm not a fan of the touch-screen/capacitive climate controls. They should've used the real buttons and knobs from the CX-30
What a nice car. Just needs more range! Go mazda go!
I thought piano black meant high gloss. I didn't know there was such a thing as matte piano black.
Mazda needs to stop with this shift to “premium”. They need to get back to the drawing boards and go back to the zoom zoom era.
You have to open the front doors to open the back doors? That would be super annoying
seems like Mazda didn't give a damn about this while making it. they just threw shit together because they wanted to be included with the other brands in the electric vehicles
An open center storage area? Cork? Cloth seating? No backseat legroom or USB ports? 100 mile range? A 0-60 of 8 seconds? I wouldn’t pay more than $100 for this car. Great, thorough review, but such a disappointing car.
Wait when sofyan floored it I thought I heard some sort of fake engine noise kind of like how ford did this in the mustang Mach E
Yes, it does create a fake noise to recreate the visceral feel of an ICE vehicle.
I actually love the look and the interior, but yeah, that range is doo doo
The specs don’t look good at all. I wish Mazda did a better effort on it. They really could have. I hope in the future this will be replaced.
