My mother was so proud to have donated money for this.
Yep. My dad gave to Jim Baker, Jimmy Swaggert , Robert Tilton and others too numerous to mention. Our family lived in an old trailer because of that. He gave 20-40 % of his GROSS. (We were farmers with a lot of expenses). ALOT of lousy family dynamics because of it. I’m not against tithing. Just supporting prostitution and lavish lifestyles. My dad did what he felt was right. They will have to answer for their deeds one day.

@@barbarathompson8559 The Catholic Diocese of Orange County purchased the Crystal Cathedral for $57.5 million. This not only included the Cathedral but other architecturally significant buildings and the vast surrounding campus. If the Catholic Church didn't purchase the cathedral some other organization would have. Because the Catholic Diocese of Orange County needed a new place to serve as its Main Cathedral for the ever-growing number of Catholics this was a premier opportunity and an absolute steal. Hell, some estates in Newport or Laguna are currently on the market for more.
At the end, the reporter mentioned 90 foot doors. But, I don't recall he mentioned them earlier in the video. I don't know what he meant by drive up confession.
But, one of reasons the doors were permanently closed during the interior renovation was to protect the organ. When the property was transferred to the Catholic Diocese, the organ was in poor condition. It had been damaged by high temperature when the Crystal Cathedral was closed between services, and also by temperature and humidity changes when the 90 foot doors were opened. In addition, the doors allowed insects, birds, and dust to get into the organ. The organ was disassembled, shipped to Italy for restoration, repair, and technology updates. When Christ Cathedral was dedicated in 2019, re-installation of the organ was not yet completed.
As was mentioned in the video, one effect of the quatrefoils is to stabilize the temperature inside the church. The new HVAC system also helps protect the organ. Another effect of the quatrefoils is improved acoustics.
The drive up confessions I believe was a reference to the pandemic time when other Catholic parishes held outdoor drive-up confessions.
@@ChesterPaulSgroi That doesn't make sense to me in the context of the 90 foot door. Although this video was uploaded in 2021, the door was permanently closed during the building's renovation and interior remodeling. So, that would have been before the dedication in the Summer of 2019.
I have to wonder if Crystal Cathedral had drive-up confessions during Reverend Schuller's time there? But, I don't even know if his denomination had confession.
When Reverend Schuller arrived in Orange County, he rented a drive-in theater to preach. He would stand on the roof of the building, while worshipers could remain in their cars. When he announced plans to build a church, he received letters from people who had mobility challenges. They appreciated they did not have to leave their cars to worship. So, Reverend Schuller had Garden Grove Community Church designed so ministers could preach from the side of the choir loft. A sliding door would open to the outside, allowing the preacher to be seen by people in the parking lot, or on the grass area between the parking lot and building.
When Crystal Cathedral was designed, Reverend Schuller wanted to continue allowing people to worship from their cars. So, the 90 foot door was included: Opening it allowed some on the outside to see the preacher. In addition, Reverend Schuller also had a large outdoor screen (JumboTron or similar) installed so worshipers who remained in their cars could have a better view.
@@jamesfunk7614 In their old building (pre-cathedral) they had a door that opened the pulpit area to the parking lot and people in their cars could hear and view the sermon along with those in the building (there are videos of this on UA-cam). I believe the 90 foot doors in the cathedral were meant to mimic this but I don't know if they still offered a view and sound for people in their cars, just meant to let in fresh air. I would have loved to see a service there during Dr. Schuler's time.

A large percentage of the catholic churches in the world are several hundred years old and older and didn't cost anywhere near what this church cost. Nor do the priest live in big extravagant houses like so many ministers live in today and they didn't wear jewelry worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

I also donate to the local fire department humanitarian fund which goes to low income families that suffer through home fires. I also donate to animal rescues but don't know the exact percentages because they vary.

A wonderful ministry. I was there for a "Music in May Festival" in May, 1984 and it was glorious. The cathedral was and will always be a glorious gift to God and all believers. Thanks be to God.

Orange County has a huge and ever-growing number of Catholics.This is considered the Main Catholic cathedral for the entire county. The Archidiœcesis of Los Angeles has a population of roughly 11,599,000 Catholics. It has only one Main cathedral for all the millions of its congregants. These cathedrals serve as gathering places for large civic celebrations and funerals that are open to all the public and are often fully filled. Some of these events are even broadcasted nationally.
Today, Catholic Charities of Los Angeles operates 22 community centers and seven homeless shelters, as well as over 50 programs serving the poor including: food pantries; thrift stores; in-home services for homebound seniors; refugee resettlement; youth employment services; counseling; affordable before-and-after-school child care; immigration assistance; pre-school for children of low income families; and temporary worker centers throughout the archdiocese of Los Angeles.
So to answer your question, no this is not built to house the homeless. Perhaps, with your heartfelt concern about the disadvantaged, you would kindly and generously donate some of your money or even volunteer your time. Please contact Catholic Charities at (213) 251-3400. Thank you.

The reason why the Crystal Cathedral was purchased by the Catholic Diocese of Orange County is because the growing number of Roman Catholics required a main cathedral to facilitate the immense growth. The diocese purchased Crystal Cathedral for only $57.5 million. Thus, the purchase was more cost effective than building a brand new Catholic cathedral from the ground up. Currently, there are some estates in Newport Beach and Laguna that are currently listed for more than that purchase price. The services at Christ's Cathedral are full and well attended. Unlike a McDonalds sign posting how many billions of its hamburgers have been consumed, Christ's Cathedral has no need to quantify how many of its parishioners have been brought to Christ via the Gospel.

In 1985 I visited the “Crystal Ball Cathedral”. Shook Schuller’s hand at the end and looked in his eyes. All I’m going to say is I never went back.
Any church leader that spends his congregation's money like that is not a leader I'd listen to either.
my family and I went there on a weekday to look around. Had read most of his books but they were pretty much saying same thing. Since then, I have learned that God wants us personally, not a fancy place to worship...

I had no idea the Crystal Cathedral is now owned by the Catholic Church. I sang there with my Universities Choir in 1998 and it was broadcast on Sunday so my mom could watch up in Northern Cali while she was sick. She is well now but this was an amazing moment. ❤ Especially after being raised listening to Dr. Schuler.

Dr. Schuller and his ministry led me to Christ and to become a Christian as a teenager. As a young college student, I was honored to have donated one of the 10,000 windows of the cathedral with my name at the side of it. It truly is a special place, even though now owned by the Catholic Church. I am glad that the Catholic Church did not name it after one of their saints, but named it Christ Cathedral. The name Christ Cathedral makes it a cathedral for all Christians of all different Christian traditions.

look I understand as much as the next guy not wanting to spend so much money to build a cathedral, but I absolutely know most of you who are complaining about this and the cost of it are absolutely fine with all of those old cathedrals that took so much more money and literal centuries to build.
Not necessarily. In centuries past it could’ve been a joint communal effort and more art and craftsmanship involved…they are literally just signing some contracts, sending some computer digits over the screen, and outsourcing to corporations with no spiritual involvement.

“God wanted the best?” Sorry, He is amongst the poor and downtrodden, the sad and the lonely. He is in a dirt covered hut and in creaky termite eaten country chapels. A grand place of worship has nothing to do with Christ’s love and compassion for all people. I read recently that my church, the Holy Roman Catholic Church, is the single most wealthy institution in the world. Rich in dollars, rich in deceit, rich in abuse, rich in coverups, rich in those mortal sins they so freely condemn the parishioners of comitting. Growing up in the Catholic religion I can’t think of a mass I ever attended where money was not asked for, focused on, nor obligation that we weren’t reminded of, from the building fund to some village of heathens in Africa we needed to support. From the old car the pastor wanted to replace or another stained glass cleaning that had to happen. It’s easy to say now that I believe in God and pray to Him every day but I no longer believe in my church. The hypocrisy is just too overwhelming.
I wonder if he will be able to look the Lord in the eye. How easily people give away their hard earned money to such decadent monstrosities with a hope of receiving salvation or maybe " please God". If they open the Bible and read, they will know that salvation is free. It cannot be bought.
