How To Fix Car Door Hinge Squeak/Creak
Вставка
- Опубліковано 6 жов 2024
- The rear door on my car had an obnoxious squeaking/creaking noise every time I opened it. You will hear how bad the noise is in the video. It's the rear door, so I don't use it that much. I finally got around to fixing it. I used WD-40 to clean out the old dirt and grease. Then lubricate the hinges with white lithium grease. Repeat the process if necessary.

That opening creak will give me nightmares to last a lifetime.
I'm wearing headphones and that first squeak scared me lol
I'm not and it made me cringe!
Hahaha! Me too and I didn't have headphones on😂
Not wearing headphones and saw ur comment before the squeak and still got scared hahah
😂😂😂
I literally Said, "Jesus Christ!!!"
Nice to have someone show you when you're new to doing a thing. My thanks to you bud
rip headphone users
not exactly. most people have auto leveling of the sound. so technically not always.
I wish I read your comment before I seen the video
Yeah, too late. Aghhgh!
Lmao, I was looking for this comment.
Thanks dude for the advice
I just followed all of the steps on my mom's old van door that would make heads turn in a parking lot took around 2-3 minutes out of my day and the sweet sound of nothing being no more creaking squeaking. The only thing is that I didn't want to get a cloth dirty so I substituted it with a paper towel and that seemed to do the trick. Made my day and for my mom here's also tomorrow!
Was your mom happy?! How’s the van?
@@Mattyv7 it works
@@petergilbert144 Ain't no way bro replied after 6 years. Hope you're doing well UA-cam stranger
Thank you .
It takes repeated opening and closing for the lithium grease to work itself all the way into the hinges. So with normal use, it got much quieter than at the end of the video.
You should check that the strap.
Thanks so much! I had put "liquid wrench" on my squeaky hinges several times. When you mentioned "white lithium grease" I looked in my garage - and we had some on hand! Turns out Liquid Wrench makes several different products - lubricant, cleaner, AND white lithium grease. I just needed to hear those three words and problem solved. Now i can go out again in public and not be embarrassed to open my driver's side door.
The arm that goes into the door "check arm" has tracks with rollers, these dried up rollers are the cause of noise in many doors and the majority of people completely overlook lubing these rollers.
His issue is the strap that you see mid door and needs to be replaced.
this shit almost gave me heart attack i was totally not prepared
Those door hinges are only 50% of what needs to be lubricated. The other 50% is the check-link which is inside the door and which that horizontal bar is connected to. So you need to squirt some grease through the hole where the bar travels inside the door to lubricate the check-link mechanism rollers.
Thanks for this importing additional information 🤘🇬🇧
would it make the horizontal bar too smooth?
Thanks RJ you have saved my sanity !!!! My older Peugeot 307 was driving me crackers with its squeaking and creaking drivers door on opening, the lithium grease has fixed it, thanks again my friend.
That first squeak scared the hell out of me 😭
It's most likely that middle bar rather than the upper and lower hinges. The reason I say this is because I tried these same steps on only the upper and lower hinges, and the problem didn't go away. I didn't lubricate the middle bar part.
Oh, and as I mentioned, it takes repeated openings and closings for the lithium grease to get worked into the hinge. As I didn't want to sit there opening and closing the door, it's not in the video. The door is much quieter now.
My lord that was squeaky
Awesome Video, a visual is so much better then just reading a "How to article"
Great video! I have a 2008 tahoe hybrid and the door was so bad i could not close it! It also ended up putting a knick in the bearing the door rotated on. I purchased ( doesnt matter what brand) lithium grease and the door doesn't make one sound! CrazyA
I didn’t notice it at first but this is a Honda Civic good choice 👍
we need more videos on Lubricating Car door locks and hinges on UA-cam, I only found yours here.
One of the old Dodge trucks had a drivers door sounding almost like that. I put some marvel mystery oil on it. It took a day or 2 to smoothin it out but has been good ever since.
I think this is my new favorite video.
Thanks for sharing your wisdom.
Interesting that my Honda Service Manual specifically states white lithium grease.
Right on thanks bro! I was just going to try wd40.
For anyone watching this thinking "it still pops". That is because he didn't address the door check (the bar between the door and car) being loose. Tighten that bolt and no more pop.

I know you comment is 3 years old and I wish I had seen it 3 years ago. I applied the lube then tightened that bolt and boom it's like a new door! Thank you and I hope you see this comment!
Is that what that rubbing sound is still
@Whoees yup I’ll do that when I find a classic early 90’s Honda Civic hatchback w/ ultra low miles. Guaranteed I will need to do this especially the door check
Sorry but the door in this video still sounds pretty terrible after the grease application
+dan428 It takes a little bit more working the door for the grease to work it's way all the in.
Haha. Yup. So did the door ever quite down after the procedure?
Haha. Yup. So did the door ever quite down after the procedure?
Yes, it got quieter as the grease got worked in.
Get some Liquid Wrench White Lithium Grease, works amaziiiingg
Good example of what you should do. You should use lithium grease. Nothing else. Well done.
Does non squeaking hinges exist?
we needed some insight , so thanks for that
How to fix a door hinge squeak. More like how not to fix a door hinge squeak. My head hurts now. Thanks dude
The door was quieter at the end of the video. It takes a while for the grease to work all the way in. It continued to get quieter with regular use.
tighten all the bolts on both sides of both hinges (door and body) 9 times out of 10 they will all tighten a full turn, all noises will disappear
White lithium is not good either, you hear that grinding noise after the white lithium? That will damage your door even further. You want to use heavy lubricant such as "all purpose grease" can find it at auto stores branded from valvoline, gm. That thing is heat, water proof. Same stuff they lubtite chassis with.
nice, easy and informative!! Thank you!
My liberties squeak like that comes from that arm between the hinges that applies the pressure to hold the door open and from the end inside the door rather than the end that's visable. How do you go about oiling that? Any way around having to pull the door panel off, and if you do pull the panel, is it easily accessible then?
Cool! It's a 2000 Civic.
Sounds like the door check/strap is also bad or needs attention.
JEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESUS! What a door. Man... I thought for a second it was just an annoying sound added to the video. Never heard a sound like this before.
I have thought about playing it for telemarketers.
Good tips. Thanks for posting.
white lithium grease is a superior lubricant to any metal to metal hinges.
Cool!
The problem is behind the door panel. Not the hinges.
Can you elaborate? I am interested.
Definitely rust-on-rust and should have nipped that in the bud sooner! Preventative maintenance is a must to avoid a hinge getting to that state:)
thanks, now the doors are super smooth until they keep knocking to other cars.
Thank you!
Very helpful, thank you!
Shown is a partial fix . your door check straps are still making a very unpleasant and grinding sound. Just had my 4 straps tightenten and lubricated by the GM dealer and it is like a 4 new doors ..cost a fair bit more of course. Anyhow ..thanks for sharing.
You should have gotten A LOT more on the black bar. That is the real source of squeaks. Also it sounds like metal to metal contact. I think some rubber pieces might have deteriorated considering how this is a rather old Toyota Corolla.
My door sounds like it’s rubbing on something. It still opens but dosnt sound right
I used silicone lubricant, and it made it even louder :(
Holy cripes I think I just lost blew my ear drums out.
Bruh I thought my door was fucked but this one was on another fucking level
thank you very much.
What is that little bar called that he wiped off? Im asking because mines is worn down and I can’t find it anywhere
Sounds like the bushings are gone and it's binding on the pins.
"This one is very creaky"
*Screams of the damned*
White lithium grease is the lube
That door noise just made me rolf
it still creaks... lol
The grease just needed more time/usage to work in, and it quieted down.
juan tovar I assumed that was his answer
RJ The Bike Guy I got into an accident and know the door makes a popping noise when opening it. How can I fix it or how much will it cost
BS. Door strap needs to be replaced
Is it advisable to do all doors and hingers or each as the problem sufrace?
It's always good to do it before the problem arises. Maybe do it once or twice a year or whenever. But most people will do it when the door creak goes beyond the point they will tolerate,
Cool! Thanks!
Door check bar is loose or broke the weld. That's the click you still hear.
T Bone how much is it to get fixed?
Thanks for this!
WD-40 Specialist White Lithium Grease
it hurts my ears man!!!!
GOD BLESS YOU TUBE
It became less squeaky by 2%, still 98% to go, good luck
I drive a 2003 Mercedes clk430 convertible. Well kept. I had a tiny little squeak coming from the outside door handle when pulled or opened. Sooo, I got some WD40 and sprayed a small amount around the handle while pulled out. It worked and the squeak stopped. Well I thought great. I'll go ahead and spray the door hinges on both side of the car and the slider bracket in the middle of the door. There was no noise or creaking before but now that slider bar on the drivers door is creaking like crazy. WTH. I made a problem where there was none. Not sure what to do now?? Thinking about squirting some isopropyl alcohol in, on, and around that slider bracket.
Use lithium grease to lube the stuff up.
shyflirt1 Hey, I'll give it a try. Thanks
Jack Robinson
Hey, Jack. How did the lithium grease go?
jakkfrost7 Hi Jakk, actually before I got around to picking some up the noise stopped. It was only about three days. I learned my lesson about WD forty. Don't use it... I will use the lithium grease next time for sure. Thanks for checking in {:>) Happy Holidays....
Jack Robinson WD-40 is good for some things. It great for dissolving old grease. But not as a long term lubricant.
read the can. it IS also a lubricant
It's a water displacer. WD. It's a crappy lubricant. It's mostly solvent!
The first time i heard the squeek im the video i was looking away and i thought it was a donkey.
If that is what you call fixed, when you wake up have your breakfast. I don't call what I believe, I herd, to be a squeaky knock fixed, which is what I herd. I will stand to be corrected if I am inaccurate, & should this be demonstrated otherwise, I apologise for the comment.
Still sounds bad so?
put a god damn warning almost died
wd-40 isn't all that great, the creaking will return quickly. I use old motor oil for hinges, it works like a charm.
Did you watch the whole video?
I need to call the doctor the first squeak blew my ears drums.
And no the door was just as bad when the grease was worked in at the end
You gotta get a new door
Use graphite spray
Door still isn't right though.
I didn’t hear a fix
Non creaky door😄it did creak still in the end 😅
Clean it first than apply wd40.
Nope, didn’t work.
Oh that door got creaky
Use Lucas white lithium grease non spray..MUCH thicker (squeeze bottle) will last as long as you own your car..
but how do you get it to penetrate into tight spots?
gardogg65 I use a small painters brush once I put it on. I get into the cracks and pins that way
okay good to know thank!
Holy shit that sounds terrible.
You should put a warning for headphone users at the start.
Too bad people near the car in parking lots didn't get a warning before they open the door lmao
What if your name is Pam? Can you still fix it yourself or is that still kinda like using “Pam” to fix it?
That's how my door sounds 😢
should make 1 min. video with just first squeaks.
LOL! I have thought about it for telemarketers. Combined with this: ua-cam.com/video/NhgzTt1sumg/v-deo.html
Dude u fucked up my earphones , damn 😬
If youre selling the car wd40 will do the job for a while........that door still sounds like its jarring though even after lubing......
It took a little bit more opening and closing for the oil to work it's way in.
thank you lol
That 's still not right, too much noise maybe silicone or Teflon based lubricant would work better.
He got so disappointed when he brought up Pam users.
Tyler Medeiros use WD40 in the locks and even in the ignition. See Scotty Kilmers videos on UA-cam. Clean the door hinges with non clorinated brake cleaner first and wipe off the old junk then spray the doors.
Do not ever use WD-40 as a lubricant due to the fact it attracts moisture. I would just avoid using it on any hinges because it works its way inside your door panels and wreaks havoc on plastic internals. If you do use WD-40 AVOID getting it on your door gaskets. WD-40 will eat the gasket and cost you money in the long run. I'm sorry but this video is more of what not to do. I'm only trying to help here because I had a bad experience.
I don't know about WD-40 attracting moisture. WD stands for Water Displacer.
shyflirt1 Haha maybe I should read my comments before posting. You are absolutely correct it means Water Displacement my bad and thanks for pointing that out. What I meant is WD-40 attracts dirt particles if it is not cleaned up properly and left on plastics including door gaskets can be costly. I would just avoid using it to clean door hinges. WD-40 does make a silicone spray which is great for top hinge, the slider bar in the middle just wipe with clean lint free cloth and apply white lithium grease.
Squeaky door
or just remove your doors and you wont have any to make that noise
That bullshit don't work. Another temporary fix
WD40 contains oil as well as solvent so how could it not be a lubricant? The producers of WD40 say it is a lubricant. What it is is not the BEST lubricant.
WD-40 contains a tiny bit of oil.
They say it's not meant for lubrication they practically added the lubricating oil for people that don't understand that it is not a lubricant. Pb blaster had the same thing they just refer to it as a film left behind to protect rather than lubricate.
RIP HEADPHONES USERS 😌🙏😂
