      Yeah...well if you look at Jensaarai1's list if videos, this one seems more at home. His are usually pretty random. But his obscure matches are always the ones I favor of his projects. Anyway, it was fun to do :)

    My jaw legit dropped as soon as this popped up on my notifications. I knew that you would one day include Ronhar Kim into your Versus Series, but I didn't know who it would be against. I'm so looking forward to this!

    I really like this match up. Never heard of these two before, but I definitely think the comparison was perfect. One was a completely insane sadist, the other was the literal definition of a true Jedi. Very well done!

    thanks for doing a video on Darth Maleval I had grown curious about him. I think we could do educated guesses on these Jedi/Sith who aren't depicted in light saber duels but take into account what they do have in accomplishments :))

    Well, this has been rather enjoyable to watch. Taking a look at these two rarely seen combatants, Jedi and Sith, I feel the urge to agree with you on the verdict. Ronhar Kim is a Jedi in his own right.
    If you ask me, Darth Maleval's choice of weaponry and technique would've placed him in a mixture of Shii-Cho, Ataru, and Niman. Shii-Cho is geared toward multiple opponents, Ataru could allow the user to employ his whole body as a weapon, and Niman represents a jack-of-all-trades style. If you're fighting Jedi, these methods may prove useful.
    Another thing you might have left out are each other's sense powers:
    See how fast Ronhar reacted when he felt the presence of the Maladian assassin behind him? He could detect the soft click of the Senate Guards' rifles mere seconds before the attack.
    Maleval must've sensed Hondo Karr's intentions to attack him coming, hence his swift responses. However, in his final moments, his blood lust blinded him to the final danger behind him.
    At least, that's all I could make out of these separate senses.
    Looking forward to your next vid.

      Yeah it's random. I wouldn't have done this one on my own. As it is, I fully recognize that it's tough to call because the characters are so lightly featured. But I liked the story of both characters so that's why I agreed to it.

    I remember leaving a comment on my old account, where I mused about Kim being a K'Kruhk lite (Form V specialist that uses Ataru mainly for evasions), while Maleval is more akin to (I hate to say it again) more akin to Snoke's Praetorian Guards from TLJ. His style is probably a Shii-Cho/Niman personalized hybrid, due to the use of a shock whip instead of dual saber wielding.

    Oh My Abeloth, this was a wonderful match and I love that you guys used Ronhar Kim. Within the SW mythos the "average" Jedi is criminally unexplored, it's always the gifted members of the Order that are shown and as a result our perspective on just what should be expected of a Jedi is skewed. Great match, wish I could give it more than a thumbs up.
    One match suggestion:
    Beyghor Sahdett & Dass Jennir vs. Aurra Sing.

    An interesting deviation from the usual Versus Vid, a battle won on principles of character and psychology moreso than raw skill and overarcing force abilities.
    A most astute observation on your account GreyJedi91.

  • @TheDen-ec9xe
    @TheDen-ec9xe 6 років тому +4

    As much as I hate to admit it, in my very humble opinion as a EU noob (sadly, most of my knowledge comes from Wookieepedia and you magnificent Forcecast folks), Darth Maleval could be compared to one of Snoke's Praetorian Guards from TLJ, the ones with the broad sword that can turn into a whip, to be more specific.
    Most likely, like many other mid to low rank members of the One Sith, Maleval started off as a Niman combatant, but then veered off into his own personalized style, with the usage of the lightsaber probably more akin to Shii-Cho (given how he uses wide slashes on multiple opponents). While the shock whip was used both for shock value for his enemies and cruel entertainment for himself.
    As for Kim, from how you describe him, he seems like a K'Khruk lite to me. Peaceful demeanor but ready for action, using a mix of Shien (and maybe Djem So when on the offensive) and Ataru as his personal style, with Ataru being used mostly to evade and much less to physically assault, since unlike K'Khruk, he seems more prone to integrate Force powers.
    But that’s just my rambling.

    Bandele's editing style is starting to influence these other VS channels. First with 3TopicReview, the Jensaarai, now GreyJedi.
    What do you think Kim's chances of being put on the council were?

    • @GreyJedi91
      @GreyJedi91  7 років тому +6

      Interesting question. On the merits of his own abilities and conduct? He'd probably be a good candidate in their eyes for either a short or long-term member. I doubt it would have mattered one way or the other to him to be honest. He seemed quite grounded and humble and had a realistic view of his status. He called himself merely average and adequate on separate occasions. That said...I tend to think that power and skill aren't necessarily the best reasons for one to be on the Council. I will say that had he kept his mouth shut and lived up to the events of Revenge of the Sith, Kim might have been seen by the remaining masters as a possible means of spying on or manipulating Palpatine given their friendship. Unlike Anakin, Kim probably wouldn't have had a problem with this. So they might appointed him for that reason too.

    This is really nitpicky and has nothing to do with your video, but one of my few issues with the Bloodlines comic is that Palpatine has gray hair when he meets Ronhar during the funeral. In the Plagueis novel when Palpatine works his way up to Pax Teem, Luceno depicts him as having red-ish hair (though if this is from blood or the glow of the lightsaber, I do not remember), and that are events that happen after, albeit shortly, his meeting with Ronhar.
    Even in TPM, you can see Palpatine having some color in his hair, wich should especially be visible when he arrives at Naboo to congratulate Obi Wan, Anakin and Padme.
    Again, extremely nitpicky, but its something I'm a little bothered by.
    Awesome video as always.
    EDIT: Grammar.

    • @GreyJedi91
      @GreyJedi91  7 років тому +2

      GeneralErlend you have a point about the film showing a tinge of color to his hair. that said I won't fault it for failing to fall in line with Luceno's work since the comic came much much earlier

    • @GeneralErlend
      @GeneralErlend 7 років тому

      I agree, I considered that when I wrote the comment, but decided to put it in regardless, even if its not fair for the comic.
      I was a bit skeptical when you and Jensaarai decided to pit these two against each other as they had very little of their talents shown in the comics, but you managed to pull it off anyways. So again, great job on this video.

    My guess would be that Kim reoriented his focus from Ataru to Shien in response to his failure to protect his father. It seems a pretty logical character evolution to me, and goes part way to explaining why he was more capable of blast deflection years later when defending Palpatine. Especially when combined with his overall skill improvement in the intervening years. As for Maleval, it's possible, and I think probable, that he relied on the shock whip to overcome his inability to project force lightning. Force lightning, when used capably, does roughly the same job as a shock whip, only much better and with more versatility. With it being such a common ability during that era, it seems to me that the only reason a Sith would use a shock whip was because force lightning was beyond them. I suppose you could argue that it's easier to to learn to duel wield than to learn a whole force ability and how to integrate it in combat, but dual wielding weapons is pretty damn hard, especially when one of them is as unwieldy as a whip.

    • @TheDen-ec9xe
      @TheDen-ec9xe 6 років тому +1

      Filip Guazzelli I like to think of Kim as a sort of reversed K'Kruhk : instead of using Ataru for attack, he used it more for evading or reaching strategic points more easily, relying instead of brute strength, on Force Powers to dispatch his enemies.
      For Maleval, seeing how many low to mid-tier One Sith members were trained in Niman, the balanced "Diplomat-type" as opposed to Krayt's own much more brutal and randomized approach. Then he used Niman as a way to Jar'Kai, and hence to use the shock whip, only to turn it into his own personal style based more around fear tactics and unconventional weapon. Probably had skills in Shii-Cho, seeing how he cut down multiple Stormtroopers.

    I can't really agree with your verdict on physicality, tools and weaponry. If it was indeed advantageous to have more than one weapon, why is it so rarely seen?
    Now, there are of course instances, where that makes sense, like having a blaster and a sword, for ranged combat and melee respectively. But two melee weapons? In your verdict, you simply add the benefits of the shock whip to the benefits of the sword, but I do think that using the shock whip at all might already impede Maleval's abilities with the lightsaber. He has to divide his attention, can't use a two-handed grip and if he switches mid-fight, that is again not optimal for his attention. So I don't think a simple additive calculation works here.
    But anyway, nice to hear from you again :)

    • @GreyJedi91
      @GreyJedi91  7 років тому +2

      I thought it was pretty straightforward really. Maleval's got a lightsaber, armor, and a whip. Lightsaber gives him even footing with the Jedi. The whip gives different options at range. The armor improves his survivability in general. He doesn't need to use the whip. But he prefers to. But if it got in the way he could put it away if he chose to. I gave the edge due to the options he as to draw from and the added protection of the armor. Objectively, he has more options than Ronhar does. That's all. Nowhere do I say two is melee weapons are better than one. Nor will you ever hear me say that. Generally speaking, the equipment segment is the least relevant factor for my final verdict though.

    • @notthedroidsyourelookingfo4026
      @notthedroidsyourelookingfo4026 7 років тому

      GreyJedi91 Yep, that's very straightforward and in that sense, it would be correct if it were directly applicable in a fight. And I don't think it is. My objection here is solely focusing on the weapons and the idea that having more options is necessarily beneficial:
      The two melee weapons offer four choices of combinations: no weapon, either the lightsaber or the shock whip, or both at the same time. These are indeed more options than Ronhar's two. But would you say that any single of the ones unique to Maleval is superior to Ronhar's options?
      If not, then the argument, as I understand it, is that being able to switch between options mid-fight offers benefits. Did interpret that correctly? If so, then I disagree, because switching weaponry doesn't work on-the-fly and your opponent will, in a real fight, always try to use these moments to his/her advantage, as you are temporarily not completely focused, or your hands are busy with sth else. So, "options" might not be to your benefit, but instead to your disadvantage. Especially, if your opponent is someone who is well trained with the weapon he/she is focusing solely on, which is the case here.

    • @GreyJedi91
      @GreyJedi91  7 років тому

      While I see your point, I don't think the issue you're raising is guaranteed to come into play. The benefits of the whip as recognized by Battlemasters who live in the star wars universe are as I noted them to be in the video. Thus a benefit of using the whip is that it could potentially confuse, intimidate, off-balance an inexperienced opponent. That's a benefit Maleval *may* have over Ronhar. It's not a certain thing...what *is* certain though is that Ronhar has no answer for it in his own arsenal. I see no reason to discount that as you seem intent to do. What's also certain is that if the whip became a hindrance, Maleval COULD put it away. Now to be fair he wouldn't be likely to because it's his preferred weapon. But he could do so...all he'd have to do is drop it...how hard is it for a Jedi or Sith to do that? I mean, Kas'im, Grand Inquisitor, Darth Maul, countless bounty hunters, Obi-wan, Shaak Ti, Sora Bulq and many many more have used different combinations of multiple weapons and switched between fighting forms and weapon focuses mid-fight without much difficulty at all. I really think you're kind of inferring a limitation that isn't necessarily there. You're also focused on the weapons. I tried to make it clear in the video and the prior comment that the armor was factored into the ruling as well. I just don't understand what you're saying should be the case...that Ronhar's equal or superior? Either way I disagree.

Yes, in-universe it might not be an issue, because combatants seem to sometimes give each other time to readjust - and my point is that that's precisely what wouldn't happen in a real fight. And as the whip is probably mostly used to off-balance and surprise (i.e. time for readjustment is needed to cope with an opponent using a whip), it's difficult to decide, when this time will be given and when not. That's why I'd opt for realism, to avoid arbitrariness.
      Yes, I indeed think that only using a lightsaber is effectively superior to using both a lightsaber and a whip, as you're able to deal stronger blows as well as parry strong blows with a two-handed grip. Especially against a Form V user, this is important. The non-lethal offensive options the whip provides don't make up for that, though that is a point you might disagree with. If you do, however, then it's still not as clear-cut as you state in the video and that's really my whole point: two weapons don't just mean more options, because if you actually use them, you might face disadvantages and then you need to evaluate in which direction the scale is tipped.
      To a lesser extent, the same goes for dual-wielding lightsabers. As they are at least lethal by themselves and can also be used defensively, the evaluation result might be different (-> better). But I would argue that not being able to employ power blows and your blades easily getting in each other's way still necessitates an evaluation. If one or more of your options are inferior to what your opponent does, then having more of them doesn't necessarily help you. That's pretty much what I mean. English is not my mother tongue, so I was struggling a little to appropriately phrase what I wanted to say ;)

      GreyJedi91 Btw, for my argument, I viewed the lightsaber as an appropriate response in Ronhar's arsenal to the shock whip. The whip is probably not made from lightsaber-resistant material, and it doesn't move quicker than a blaster bolt.

      +GreyJedi91 Yes you do (in a similar fashion to force spirits?). Anyway, I don't have any sort of critiques in terms of issues. I think your analysis was on point given the material, the explanation were great, music was well picked. Overall though, it was still great and very very good. Though on a personal request, since you are clearly a fan of the One Sith, are you planning on using Darth Krayt anytime soon? As for who he is up against, I want you to have full creative freedom because you rarely disappoint. Thank you so much for this one though.

      Well...I've used Nihl a couple times. I've used Talon. I've used Wyyrlok and am planning to use him again pretty soon. My next vs. match will feature Maladi. And I've got some plans for Stryfe...so yeah...I'm building up to Darth Krayt :)

      Thanks! And I don't know what's going on with the Tales podcasts. We've got 2 parts recorded and I thought they were supposed to be uploaded on the other's channels already but they're not yet I guess. Part 3 will be recorded soon and released on my channel after it's done. So hopefully within the next couple of weeks all 3 episodes should be up.

    • @GreyJedi91
      @GreyJedi91  7 років тому

      Yeah...I had some concerns that people might think I'd run out of ideas and reached the bottom of my barrel before I uploaded this one. While I do like little known characters, it wasn't my first instinct to feature these two in a match up. Was Jensarrai1's request. Got a lot more planned. And while some of them are fairly obscure, there's more substantial evidence behind them to dig into than I was able to find for this one. Thanks for watching all the same.

      You do solid work boss so while it's not in my taste it's still worth a watch to broaden my understanding of star wars. Personally If I had to give a suggestion I'd go with Jaden Korr, or Kyle Katarn. Maybe some of the new order jedi. The Legends continuity as a lot of underappreciated characters. If I had to pick a specific request Clone Wars A'sharad Hett versus Ferus Olin or Jaden Korr seems like an interesting fight.

    Do you have any thoughts on Darth Jadus or even knew about him?
    He is one of my favorite characters in SWTOR and i think he's interesting because he is one of the calmest, yet strongest, Siths in that game universe. I would say he is prof that you don't need anger to be strong in killing with the Force.

    • @GreyJedi91
      @GreyJedi91  7 років тому

      I do know about him yes. I wouldn't say I'm a huge fan of his, but I do like him. I have a love/hate thing with SWTOR. In general I just don't really care for the overall story of the game. I really like a lot of the characters from that period though. While I don't know all there is to know about Jadus, I know enough to find him appealing. He's my kind of Sith Lord in general. And he had a great voice actor that suited his role very well.

      Max Gustafsson There’s no way the latter match of those two could happen. There is not nearly enough information on Adas or Tulak to include either in a versus match. Yes, they have reputations among the Sith, but those hardly tell you anything substantial enough to compare them. In short, they’re both unusable.
