Cissy Houston - the Mother of Whitney - as the leading vocalist
The Sweet Inspirations basically evolved from the Gospelaires. Dionne Warwick created the group to be a junior version of the Drinkard Singers with her sister Dee Dee, Myrna Utley (member of the SI), Carol Slade and Myrna's brother John Utley. Cissy Houston (Dionne's aunt),, Doris Troy and Judy Clay (Dionne's adopted sister) would perform with them from time to time. The group became highly sought after in the New York studios for background work. Dionne left in 1963 for a solo career after being tapped as the voice for Bacharach-David. At this time, Dee Dee Warwick became the group's manager and they continued as backup singers. Eventually Dee Dee left as well to pursue a solo career and Cissy became the de facto leader. Sylvia Shemwell (Judy Clay's biological sister) and Estelle Brown would join Myrna Utley Smith and Cissy. Eventually they were given a recording contract by Jerry Wexler with Atlantic Records as he was impressed by their work for Aretha Franklin, and the Sweet Inspirations were born. I may have some of the dates and order of who left when out of whack, but that is the basic story and includes most of the members from what I've read about over the years.
I have meet Estelle many times in Los Angeles. Very nice a lot of stories about the group
They were Aretha's backing group on many of her songs.

Which one is Cissy Houston. And I just read she was not her biological mother.
Mrs.Cissy Houston is the one who's listening lead and you cannot read everything you see and hear because isn't real and untrue Mrs. Cissy Houston raised and loved her children. Rest in Heaven Mrs Cissy Houston ❤
