I read somewhere that in his Manhattan apartment he had a special deal with one of his neighbours about when NOT to play. Even Erroll Garner practised.
BuckshotLaFunke1 thank god the piano in my house is towards the outside walls of the house, and not connected to other inhabited flats below or by the side. i wouldn't be able to practice following my family's AND my neighbours' needs and timetables. too little time
Thanks for posting, but like other folks have pointed out I think you are the one who is confused. Erroll Garner had a style unto himself which always exuded joy and a great swing. Definitions can sometimes confine the listening experience.
Yes! Your father was great, what a stylist! And what a great trio! Do you have any recollections of what being in that trio was like for your dad? ...... For me the Jazz Piano Mt Rushmore has Tatum, Garner, and Cole carved on it. That's just a personal opinion. Three kinds of perfection.
It's so evocative of something dreamy that's hard to name---a beautiful girl at a train station on a foggy day perhaps. Maybe a scotch and soda with good friends. It really hits you deep down. I've listened to this over a hundred times and I never get tired of it.
This genius was not at all confused, just his interpretation. Mr. Garner could have without a doubt played this according to Carlos Jobim's original composition.
Ah........a nice cup of green tea, a whiff of fresh air, no cigarettes, of course, and the sound of the immortal Erroll. That makes a splendid morning, doesn't it?
Mr. Al; I don't see any confused playing on this personal rendition, it may be probably different to the regular Brazilian versions and its rhythm.... On the other hand, Samba and Bossa Nova are different rhythms; maybe this confuses you a bit. I think Mr. Garner, as a great musician, is playing his style on a jazzy improvisational way. Bossa Nova is something born from jazz and a fusion of local rhythm from Brazil, mostly inspired on jazz musical techniques; therefore, its basis is justly international, as it must certainly be... come on!!
ya the guy who wrote the description has no clue what hes talking about. erroll is as in control as you can be as a live performing musician of that calibre
Throwback Thursday...this song is from the album "Jazz Samba" recorded in 1962; the song "Desafinado" (Slightly Out Of Tune) won a Grammy Award. Blessings
That's an interesting take in the description LOL! I think Bossa Nova was in no way difficult for him or his bandmates. When you listen to many of the other tunes he played, he often put his own spin on them. And they were usually MORE interesting that the originals or the standard way of playing them. I mean, this man, along with so many other jazz artists of his era, were in fact musical geniuses. If we want to really find out if playing Bossa was difficult for him, then we would have to hear him play several songs in the style. This is one song, and it was more likely as I'm describing versus what you described. Bossa is actually a rather simple style to learn, especially for a seasoned musician.
Hi 300Discos, you should just be a little more generous. Nothing is confused. I don't think Errol Garner doesn't understand the Bossa Nova. Maybe it's rather that you misunderstand Garner. This is definitely not an attempt to play this Bossa Nova as a traditional Bossa Nova, but a swing interpretation of a Bossa Nova piece.
The vidéo introduction says how difficult it was for Garner to play à bossa nova. Poor comment as Garner just takes this wondeful melody to play his music. He never prétended to play bossa nova. He could catch any music to play some Erroll Garner
"Erroll Garner and crew recorded it in 1962. I don't have info about the nature of this performance, perhaps a rehearsal or a TV show, but they are really confused playing Samba de Uma Nota So (One Note Samba). This video helps understanding how difficult it was for international musicians to play Bossa Nova." What ARE you talking about?? You are kidding aren't you?
Errol could play anything he heard in any style he wanted and arrange it in his head almost immediately.. He was a true Genius,
No piano lessons and from memory. My goodness, who would deny his genius?
His playing, the notes how he plays them...like hes telling a joke or he is teasing, always puts a smile on my face. Thank you Erroll
No reason to be confused. He simply played the tune in a swing rhythm instead of the traditional bossa. Trust me, he knew what he was doing.
Y6
Exactly His style Is jumpy AND sincopated. So he didn't have to play it tradionaly.
Not remembering the original begining made by verses we met in the Cole Porter's Night and Day
Wow....the part from 0:00 - 4:59 is pure genius!
Great comment!!!!
good one. Agreed
What's the problem with 5:00?
Total !
Ao contrário do narrado na descrição não há confusão.nenhuma, mas recriação pura. Lindo !
Pra mim E Garner é simplesmente o maior/nunca me canso de ouvir.
"Confused" -- bless your heart, baby. We should all be so confused. Excellent. He is like unto a god.
The King of swing. Big
Master.
Also love the driving double bass from Eddie Calhoun, who was there on 19th September 1955 at the legendary Concert By The Sea in Carmel, California.
i just love his interpretation great!!!!
love his music. I tried to copy him but failed hopelessly. He is still the best ever. He never learnt. Total genius and an utter joy to behold.
I read somewhere that in his Manhattan apartment he had a special deal with one of his neighbours about when NOT to play. Even Erroll Garner practised.

There's a difference between Bossa and Jazz.
Erroll at his awesome best!
Thank you!
Magical trio I saw and heard so many times, Erroll Garner, Eddie Calhoun and Kelly Martin
Erroll was born with the gift of music.
Another splendido morning with da might-ay Erroll.
Thank you so much for your troubles!
Thanks for posting, but like other folks have pointed out I think you are the one who is confused. Erroll Garner had a style unto himself which always exuded joy and a great swing. Definitions can sometimes confine the listening experience.
awesome - amazing - I adore his piano playing. what absolute bliss.
Pure Genius
A self taught master just like my father the great Oscar Moore of the Nat King Cole Trio.
Man your pops was a Bad MF on guitar..., I often wonder why he's not better known as one of the early Greats of the Jazz Guitar.
The touch Errol, pure swing, fantastic !!!!
GAWD. Just, natural. Unreal, wow.
theeis NO confusion .... its just pure genius !!!! love the way erroll liked to play
No confusion at all. Just a swing version of a bossa nova tune.

The GREAT Erroll Garner!
Thanks for this gem, my friend.
Simply fantastic.
It's so evocative of something dreamy that's hard to name---a beautiful girl at a train station on a foggy day perhaps. Maybe a scotch and soda with good friends. It really hits you deep down. I've listened to this over a hundred times and I never get tired of it.
Delicious super cool see him smiling
This genius was not at all confused, just his interpretation. Mr. Garner could have without a doubt played this according to Carlos Jobim's original composition.
Amazing. Bossa changed the world, our perception of the world. Errol showed his perception of Bossa, a fantastic recreation!
Ah........a nice cup of green tea, a whiff of fresh air, no cigarettes, of course, and the sound of the immortal Erroll.

I think you are totally right. Erroll has been always improvising on all the tunes he played and made his own. Great tune as often.
ya the guy who wrote the description has no clue what hes talking about. erroll is as in control as you can be as a live performing musician of that calibre
When I have a bad day and just before going to bed I listen Earl Garner and then I quietly go to sleep
This is great!
Le Bonheur, la joie, le jazz et ERROLL GARNER
That is what I call an inspired version of this lovely tune.
It's as if he's saying the music. He's loving what he's doing.
Throwback Thursday...this song is from the album "Jazz Samba" recorded in 1962; the song "Desafinado" (Slightly Out Of Tune) won a Grammy Award. Blessings
Bravo, dieser Sound ist einmalig, man erkennt sofort den Pianisten.
What are you talking about in your intro? No confusion noted by me. This is the Garner style if you haven't already noticed.
Best one note samba ever !

❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
No Confusion here !
The secret is that he have ten fingers in every hand and two brains
Errol Garner was a monster. A rhythmic one, but a monster nonetheless. CONFUSED? Tuh.
Yes!!
The vidéo introduction says how difficult it was for Garner to play à bossa nova. Poor comment as Garner just takes this wondeful melody to play his music. He never prétended to play bossa nova. He could catch any music to play some Erroll Garner

Yea swing feel, one note samba 👌
i think the moaning, that erroll made during his performances is vital to his stage persona!!!!
Erroll was definitely not confused.
I am very confused; how can he be that good?
If they’re “confused”, then we should all strive to be confused.
4:39 ❤😂😮😅
DE AMERICA LATINA PARA EL MUNDO !!!!!!!!

John Gafa passion, energy and pouring your heart out on the piano

Na hora do improviso, mostram que não entraram no espírito da musica. Por isso a bossa nova salvou o jazz. Tava ficando com improvisos muito repetitivos e clichês.
