- Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Singapore, addresses the general debate of the 77th Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations (New York, 20 - 26th September 2022).

The UN General Assembly (UNGA) is the main policy-making organ of the Organization. Comprising all Member States, it provides a unique forum for multilateral discussion of the full spectrum of international issues covered by the Charter of the United Nations. Each of the 193 Member States of the United Nations has an equal vote.
The United Nations is an international organization founded in 1945. Currently made up of 193 Member States, the UN and its work are guided by the purposes and principles contained in its founding Charter.
The UN has evolved over the years to keep pace with a rapidly changing world.
But one thing has stayed the same: it remains the one place on Earth where all the world’s nations can gather together, discuss common problems, and find shared solutions that benefit all of humanity.

I'm not Singaporean nor paid by them. Singapore's Foreign Minister's speech should set a bar to small nations around the world, as well as to those fighting for equitable sustainable development in a tough environment. So many countries come to UNGA to grandstand and play to their base back home. So much of Balakrishnan is focused on the global state of play and not bragging about Singapore. In this, I am increasingly convinced that despite concerns about freedom in Singapore, that country is truly a world leader in how to deliver for the majority of its people.
The funny thing about western values about freedom. Freedom to carry guns, but no freedom to go out at night. Freedom of speech (lies, tales, anything) No freedom of peace, cause one party hurt by untrue, will find another untruth to share about the other party. Freedom to have drugs, but no freedom to those that do not take drugs, just look at NYC and SF druggies on the road sidewalk, used needles thrown everywhere.

-The 77th session of the General Assembly is taking place in the shadow of multiple crises, including Russia's invasion of Ukraine, superpower rivalry, and the COVID-19 pandemic.
-The multilateral system is being severely tested, and the prospects for international cooperation have weakened considerably.
-The climate crisis, deterioration of global commons, and food, fuel, and finance crises are all happening concurrently, compounding each other in a vicious circle.
-Singapore believes that the only way forward is to uphold the inclusive and rules-based multilateral system that has underwritten peace and progress since World War II.
-Small states, like Singapore, must uphold the fundamental principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity to ensure the security and existence of their countries.
-While the rules-based multilateral system is not perfect, it is by far the best option in addressing transnational challenges and managing the global commons.
-Multilateral cooperation is the only way forward, as ultimately we share one planet and our destinies are interwoven.

The UN rules have been twisted, to allow over 200 interventions by USA, yet, Russia abides by the UN rules and is labeled illegal, because USA refuses to recognize the status of the separatist states in Ukraine.
Despite two agreements, involving USA and others, recognizing independence for the separatist states, when Russia goes to their aid , after being begged to do so (stopping continued human rights violations, well documented in the UN), The USA lead statement from the UN, is that it is illegal to invade "Ukraine".

Multilateralism must include Russia, North KOrea, Venezuela, Africa, Iran etc and not to label any one country as pariah state! Stop playing the sanction game again and again as a convenience tool but ineffective- think about it.

Where was the Rule based order or UN Charter rhetoric when West and EU tore apart Middle East ? I would like to see the speeches give by Singapore at previous UNGA meeting when Iraq Afghanistan Syria Libya Yemen Serbia were illegaly invaded or bombed.
