  • For over seventy years, Macau has played host to one of Asia's most spectacular sporting events, the Macau Grand Prix. Originally conceived as an amateur motor race by a group of local enthusiasts, the event has grown into one of the most significant races for young drivers on their way to the top of the sport.
Since 1977, drivers who have raced in Macau have gone on to win well over 500 Formula One Grands Prix, the list of competitors including names such as Ayrton Senna, Michael Schumacher, Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen. In addition to the main races for international drivers, Macau's notoriously difficult street circuit continues to attract local entrants for the support events which are crucial to developing the sport in the region. In this exclusive event, Dr. Philip Newsome and Matthew Marsh recall some of the major moments from their involvement in this event and why it has achieved such a unique place in the motor sport calendar.
