I knew there was black gesso. But, never crossed my mind to mix a color with gesso, that's interesting. So, technically I could mix any color with gesso. That's an awesome tip!

I really appreciate it - Yes I would start by mixing a little and also pick out the colour that is in the background of your painting or if you want to give the painting a warm tint you could add a touch of burnt sienna. The final painting can be found here www.spectrumartstudio.com/commissions-1 I had planned to use it as part of a clip but I had to focus on the quality of the painting and was starting to get distracted so had to turn the camera off. I didn't make the canvas but plan to make some next month as am going to make them in the future for commissions I bought this one from Hobbycraft and they have a 3 for 2 on at the moment ✨ 🎨 ✨ 👩🏻🎨 ✨

Very informative! I always wondered why oil artists primed with gesso as I thought the gesso was primarily for the acrylic artist. Impressive size to that canvas! Never thought of premixing a huge batch of gesso for all the layers! Will definitely be saving some time wit this trick! 🤩👍
Hi Animal Art by TerraCotta - Thank you for your kind words - Some artists prime with gesso but some prime with a slow drying oil based layer - It depends on the effect you are trying to create. Because I knew that I wanted to gesso this and another subsequent canvas of the same size the same colour as the portraits were taken on the same photo shoot, I have mixed a large batch.
