- Опубліковано 14 сер 2024
- Join me as we explore one of the most violent and turbulent times in medieval history - The Anarchy. We will find out how a disaster at sea brought about a succession crisis that eventually lead to a seizure of the English crown and a subsequent civil war that lasted for around a decade and a half. We shall investigate the principle characters, the main areas of conflict, we will also visit locations that are important to the saga and then finally look at the eventual peace that was brokered together with how the country was rebuilt in the wake of this protracted carnage.

The whole plot of House of the Dragons with some changes and no dragons 🔥🐲🐉
Otherwise referred to the time as " When Christ and his saints slept". Another we'll done video! Thank you!
Many thanks Sheila 🙏😉
Subscribed. I cant get enough English history. The anarchy especially is a very important part that is often overlooked in my opinion.
Hi John, I completely agree with you, a fascinating period 👍🙏
@@historyslifestories373lol
Such a well produced, informative production, thank you so much ☺️
Many thanks for your kind words, it keeps me going 😉🙏👍
@@historyslifestories373 your own skill will keep you going and you have it in bucket loads. I watch loads of history channels yet I always remember yours from when you first started. You're good! 🎖️
This was really well told🏴Neat idea pausing to show us around Arundel castle--Ive not saw anyone do this in any of their history tales...creative touch
Many thanks 👍🙏, I like showing these places, especially Arundel, a fantastic castle and a lovely town too.
Thank you for this video. The succession crisis following the death of Henry I is one of my favorite to research!
Don't let the complainers ruin what was a very good video.
Thanks very much, that was one of my first videos, I too am fascinated with the subject 😉🙏👍
A neglected corner of English history. Could be subtitled "The rise of the Plantagenets". Henry II doesn't get the credit he deserves due to Beckett's death/murder, Richard Coeur de lion+Crusades & John+Magna Carta. Henry III is overlooked as it is Edward I who gets the attention.
Thanks for the video 👍
Yes, quite agree, a very interesting period in history, many thanks 👍🙏
Stephen, one in a long row of people who were saved by having the shits at the right time...
Ha ha 👍🙏
Very well done .Excellent research and very well narrated chronologically. Photos of contemporary sites are well done. Waiting anxiously for other videos on the Angevins and Platagenets from your end . Thanks.
Hi Alok, just editing the latest at the moment, glad you like them 👍🙏
Thank you very much for the presentation ❤
You are very welcome 🙏👍
I’m stoked I found this channel!
Many thanks Andy 😉🙏👍
@@historyslifestories373 Thank you too! This is honestly up there with like History Time… really well done! I love that you’ve got videos on the earliest monarchs. Keep up the great work!!
History Time, that really is praise indeed, I am a real fan myself. Pete Kelly makes wonderful videos. Let me know if there is anything or anyone you would like me to cover 🙏👍
@@historyslifestories373Thanks for your replies! And I agree, Pete does some excellent work but your channel is also exceptional. You’ve got a gift for history and storytelling my friend.
If you do ever have the opportunity, one topic I would really love to learn more about is the pre-1066 rulers. Aethelflaed, Alfred & his son Edward, the early kingdoms of England up through The Confessor and King Harold - really anything within that time period, to me, is one of the most fascinating periods in western history.
Thanks again for taking the time to respond. I’ll be _certain_ to let my fellow history fans know about this channel!!! Really, really great work you do!
Excellent, luv your series on history.
Many thanks, glad you like them 👍😂
Very interesting. I recently read "The White Ship" by Charles Spencer. According to that book, there was a sole survivor of the disaster: a butcher.Thank you for this video. I've wanted to know more about Stephen and the Anarchy for some time.
You’re very welcome, yes they were certainly very interesting times 😉🙏👍
Excellent again, thankyou.
Glad you enjoyed it👍🙏
Both versions of "Lion in Winter" are wonderful movies focused on Henry II. "Becket" also concerns Henry II. Henry II inherited a country that had experienced destruction and lawlessness.
Absolutely right, Henry went to great lengths to ensure peace and security for England, as opposed to what went on before 👍
That was excellent. King Stephen was a bit of mystery to me. Thanks for story. Henry II was my favorite of all the English kings. Still he himself found it hard to yield power after he gained it, that cost him. Stephen claim to the throne was legit, in my opinion. He just had to many shifting barons to contend with. Great story, English history is the best. They wrote it all down, that is the secret.
Many thanks Steve, It would have been interesting to see how Stephen’s reign would have panned out without the war. 👍🙏
@steve O'Sullivan All realms had ALL important matters written down, as well as many unimportant events and beliefs.
@@meeeka Not here in the Americas.
How his claim legit? How?
@@dhritidutta6231 Stephen was a direct and legitimate grandson of William the Conqueror. (His mom Adela was the daughter of William the Conqueror)
I can't help but wonder if this is what "Pillars of the Earth" was based on.
Yes, the book is set primarily in the period of the Anarchy 👍
Yes, it was.
Excellent program. How about Alienor of Aquitaine, Edward I and Eleanor of Castile?
Many thanks for your comment and suggestions which are definitely food for thought. 👍🙏
@@historyslifestories373you have to do isabella edward II and roger mortimer
@@overcomerbtbojI think this is a very good suggestion. Barely any captivating videos on this topic.
I wonder who was the actress for Empress Matilda. She looks fierce and yet attractive.
Ha ha, I certainly wouldn’t want to mess with her. Apparently one of the chroniclers at the time who actually saw her remarked how beautiful she was - but I guess it would have been difficult to say anything else 😉👍
@@historyslifestories373 She is generally depicted as blonde, although whether those depictions had any basis in reality is anyone's guess.
When I am full of boredom or self pity or just ungrateful.i thank God I wasn't born then.
Watch The Lion In Winter. Especially if you're having family problems. Can you imagine being the child of Henry and Elanor? No matter what holiday dinners are like at your house, it's probably not as awful as the Plantagenets.😊
How 'fiction' and 'non-fiction' overlap or at least how they end on the spectrum of history. Case in point, "The Pillars of the Earth" ⚔️..........⛪
You may wanna put in the description that this war inspired Dance of the Dragons.
There is a series of murder mysteries set at the time of the Anarchy. Brother Cadfael is a great character and the research is excellent. Ellis Peters is the author and there are twenty in the series.
Many thanks for letting me know 👍🙏
Thanks for this really interesting documentary about a less popular period in British history. Well written, well delivered and only slightly marred by the anachronistic images; the 15th century mounted knights were pushing it a bit.
Many thanks, yes, I shall tone down the knights and battle scenes for the next one, to be honest it’s extremely difficult getting accurate footage for that period. But there are other ways of getting the same effect so I will be using those, it’s all a learning curve 😊👍🙏
@@historyslifestories373 I understand your difficulty in getting suitable images for the period; there aren't a lot. Perhaps you could trawl contemporary manuscripts or contact re-enactors interested in the period. The Bayeux tapestry is fairly contemporary.
I like your maps; please include more if you can in your next video; they really help to provide context to what you are saying.
Thanks again for a really interesting video.
I was shocked when I saw the later kind of sailing ship I figured couldn't have been developed and built and was already a ghost ship in those days. It looked like the Flying Dutchman. ⛵
This is interesting
I am glad you found it so. 😉🙏👍
Thanh you.
You are very welcome 🙏👍
The description 'anarchy' was first used by a Victorian academic.
You are quite correct, many descriptive phrases and names for events and people were coined sometimes hundreds of years after. 😉
Simon de Montfort, if you could include how his sons murdered a Plantagenet in Italy. Many thanks.
"Stephen was thought to be attractive..." Well, there's your proof that standards of attractiveness were, uh, different, shall I say?
Ha ha, sorry but I couldn’t resist it, quite agree, awful picture, but it was painted many years after his death so I think it is safe to assume he looked nothing like it - well hopefully for him 😉👍
37:28 of course lol
I am curious to know something about the Anarchy. During the Anarchy did Lords have small-scale conflicts for each other's holdings etc? As we know from historical sources, there was a widespread breakdown in law and order, so surely small-scale conflicts happened during this? If so, are there any sources or stories? I have read of small scale squabbles in other conflicts such as The Wars of the Roses.
A book titled Stephen by Carl Watkins (it’s quite short and only a few pounds off Amazon) provides a very good account on the relationships between Stephen, Matilda and the Barons and demonstrates very well how they kept switching allegiance’s whenever it suited. The Barons also did pursue their own campaigns against each other frequently, fighting over land and so on, this carried on for many years after the Anarchy. However, they did also join forces (well many of them) and fought against the monarch in the first and second Barons wars.
@@historyslifestories373 Thank you for the reply. Awesome! I didn't know Penguin did a Penguin Monarchs series; I'll have to give it a read!
I didn't know Matilda was so pretty.
Ha ha, it was written at the time that she was beautiful, but they would probably have lost their heads if they said anything else 😁
@@historyslifestories373 of course, I am a history buff 😜
I'm sure she didnt know either.
I think this is such interesting information.
Could do with more story telling. Less recitation of facts
Some family tree visuals would be good too- the plantagenets are a difficult bunch to follow
There's prob about 3 documentaries worth of stuff here. Slow down
Thanks for your comments, I will take them on board, I like the one regarding the family tree, I shall look into that. 👍🙏
Plate armour was not in existence at that time!
Yes, you are quite correct, I couldn’t find accurate stock footage at the time, I should have found another way of depicting battle scenes.
Thats true.
And it all begins with a boat....
Yep, events eh? 👍
I tell ya, diarrhea has changed history so many times!!
😂😂😂Absolutely right, must have been the biggest killer back then.
So did eating one too many lampreys 🤣
All this because of the awful Norman conquest.
It certainly had its repercussions 🤔 I often think what kind of country we would be in now if certain events never happened, I was in Worcester Cathedral a few weeks ago filming for King John and Prince Arthur’s tomb is there, just think if he hadn’t died and then no Henry VIII - ha ha it can drive you mad👍🙏
@@historyslifestories373
Life is what ifs.
...for the English." Not the world.
"Stephen was thought to be attractive..." (shows ugly, cross-eyed portrait)
Yes, you are quite right, I hope for his sake he didn’t look like that in real life. There are other images but they are imagined, maybe I should have used one of those 🤔
@@historyslifestories373 ha ha, it's ok! It just struck me as funny!
And I shouldn't criticize, I love the videos.
Lol. Yeah, let's take actors who are really hot by 21st-century TV standards, give them thoroughly modern, high-end professional makeup jobs and hair styles, slap some Ren-fair costumes on them, then call it "History."
You are not smart. Everyone is laughing at you 😂
@@ToneWoN Wow, you know everyone? How do you find the time?
Just be glad he’s not using africans to portray characters in the story, like Dan Jones did Anne Boleyn ...Its the story telling thats rich here..
@Vanessa A screen drama not intended on entertaining or telling a story...A drama that had been told from every slant possible...Anybody can portray anyone I suppose, it seems Dan Jones intentionally cast an ill fitting actor to a role that to most attach in one way or another their identity culture heritage and hold close to the national story....Almost as if to say to the English people that their idea of English history matters not, a New history of England is being written to match England of 2022...There will be upcoming Englishmen that will vigorously reject any sort of disrespect or false portrayal as the New English brotherhood, though smaller, becomes tighter more determined and intolerant of misrepresentation of Englishness or English history
@@THINKincessantly calm down lol you're getting pissed off over an issue that literally doesn't exist, that you just made up in your own delusional mind 🤦♂️
OK, factually, not terrible. But I had to give up. A montage of random images that have little to do with the narration? Rolls of watercolor paper with norse runes? Has what to do with Stephen and Matilda? Costumes overtly not of the right period. Other than most of the time the sex of the odd actor who was to represent whoever was being spoken of was right? This has descended to the level of The History Channel. Pass. Hard pass.
I think, they used scenes from "Game of Thrones" ...
