    Not a pracical test. All you proved is perfect conditions gives same performance as a cheap bubble wrap radio saying on the package it does 50 miles. How about real world results. How about mountain conditions. Per watt, the CB radio does better in mountain conditions, important for offroaders. (2) CB Radio VS. GMRS Range Test In The Mountains. I have been extremely impressed with GMRS. I regularly reach from sea level, a repeater located on top of a hill, 2800ft above sea level, from 60 miles away with 15watts.

    • @hamradio1017
      @hamradio1017 3 роки тому +3

      The best part there is your 15 watts just has to hit the repeater. From there the 50 watts the repeater can put out can go much further, depending on height.

    Voyager is 14 billion miles away and transmits at 23watts, lol line of sight. Fun video! GMRS is great for off-road adventures, clear audio with your buddies, and great in case of emergency. GmRS repeaters are popping up everywhere and are linked into large state wide and Nation wide networks. I prefer it to CB. I use CB too, but for other things.

  • @Bones469
    @Bones469 3 роки тому +2

    I don't have my GMRS license but frequency wise that is pretty much the same as our 70cm band. I can tell you, here in Utah county we can easily do well over 30 miles mobile to mobile on the valley floor. We are also constantly surprised at the obvious Non LOS (line of sight) communications we get.
    In our 'Sultans of Simplex' group, which I believe is still on broadcastify, we do this pretty much every day. Originally we were trying to decide between 2-meters and 70cm for our home frequency. The computer modeling showed that on 70cm, some of us would not be able to talk base to base but with a cheap 1480 dual band base antenna on the roof, we easily have QSOs nearly every night and because there is so much less noise on UHF, the clarity is superb.
    Now the exact science behind it goes beyond NLOS (near line of sight) because at that frequency you have other things that come into play such as "ducting" and "reflection" and, "knife edge refraction"and there are probably others. On a quiet band it does not take a lot of signal to be intelligible.
    I will mention however, there is s negative aspect as well and that is "multipath" that causes peaks and nulls or troughs. This can be heard as a "picket fence" while driving and nearly no coms if you happen to stop in a place were the multi path causes a null from destructive interference. We get this at stop lights and drive-thrus. The good thing if it sounds bad, 9 times out of 10 you can merely let of the brake slightly and roll just a few inches, into a peak and regain solid copy.
    I didn't see the comment of the detractor but I almost wonder if they were comparing CB radio to GMRS. 26 miles mobile to mobile CB radio AM would be pretty darn tough. Although when I lived in SoCal just a few Watts up on Wilson you could talk from clear out in Ventura way all the way down though San Fernando, LA and OC and I mean way down south almost to San Diego. I would like to see what you could do with one of those 50 Watt UHF radios. You could probably go clear out to Barstow or further and maybe out to Catalina. If I was still down there i would pick up a license to help you test.

For direct line of sight, like that 12:30, I suspect a (properly installed) 4 Watt cb would work just as good 😁. However for those of you who go wheeling and have a cb in the vehicle, GMRS really is vastly superior, please consider a change over. You won't regret it! Now that I am a recovering sad ham (thank you very much) I am busy digging into the happier world of GMRS. No surprise to me that your test worked and the validity of it is beyond suspicion.
    I get somewhat the same results here in Montana - I can go from Tid TD-H5 to TD-H5 - both simplex - from inside two houses, almost 9 miles apart.
    I also bought an MXT575 and I can work a seriously large footprint too. I'll have my repeater up-n-running in a few days and the last time there was a GMRS repeater in the valley, it worked 60+ miles to the north past Missoula and also 28 miles south to Darby, MT. This is in a lot of tree-infested areas.
    → All-in-all --- I say your test was no biggie, 'cause I am getting very close to the same results. Good on ya and let the scoffers scoff!
    (PS - I used to live in Anza and I'm pretty sure I could have been the Channel-King Of GMRS from that elevation.

Thanks for your detailed description. I was so perplexed by the attachment on your thumb it made it very difficult to concentrate on the subject matter of your video. From where I live in Seattle to several repeaters I sometimes use is just over 40 miles. I only have handheld radios, a Baofeng uv5r, Baofeng uv82 and a Radioddity GD-77 and I only have stock antennas for the Radioddity GD-77 and medium length rubber duck antennas for the Baofengs. I can simplex into the VHF and UHF repeaters and the DMR repeater just fine from my 2nd floor apartment. Say what you will but I've had some good conversations through those 40.2 mile away repeaters with my cheap handhelds.

    I have my GMRS License and amateur radio license. GMRS is great for most off-road and Intown communications, but if you are into commutations, should strive for your ham license as well, you will not be sorry. You we get much wider access across the spectrum of frequencies to communicate around the world, and in most cases on .5 a watt of power. Don’t get me wrong, GMRS great for what it is, but why stop there.

    Funny 😄 your right if one of the radios is higher you will get more range . I’m not a radio guy I’m just learning as of now . Even I knew that. When I was a kid my grandfather and his friends were big CB guys . I can remember him talking to people as far as 20 miles. That was from his Jeep. No boosters just stock antenna. Of course a lot of those people had bigger set ups etc. I do remember grandpa saying that if we took the Jeep to the top of the hill he would even get more range.
    That’s in Southeast Ohio lots of forest between the radios

    Height over the local terrain is everything at GMRS frequencies. Soon I'll test two 4 watt radios at 15 miles with one on a 40ft hill and the other a 30ft mast in suburbia. Hope to get an understandable signal. The antenna will likely become the second most important variable.

    You know, all these "Jeep guys" spend tons of money on putting huge stereos in their trucks so they can listen to the music they want on the trail, and potentially hundreds on radios to chat with each other - and almost none of them consulted a car stereo shop about their radios and how they could have been integrated to the audio system.
    Get a speaker level line converter (like an AudioControl LC8i or WaveTech Link8) and take the speaker jack out of the radio and pump it into your - well, if I have to spell it out for you from this point...
    I used to be a car stereo install guy in the '90's, moved to Home Theater, and then commercial AV... systems integration is my background. No reason you need to have a ton of speakers crammed in your cab when your factory locations can do more than one thing. If you have a radio with a PA speaker out and an in-cab (radio traffic) speaker out, you can feed one to the "left" and the other to the "right" to combine those from multiple radios. This keeps the purposes separate but will combine the various lefts and rights into a single left (Radio traffic) and right (PA announcements) channel.
    Most of the line converters have a way to detect a signal input and trigger a car stereo to turn on, so the integration can be really slick and simple to use. If you mix the radios in after the head unit, you can keep all the volume controls separate... The sky is the limit on how you want to set it up in a way that works for you - a car stereo shop will be capable of helping you figure out how to make it work if you can't do it your self.

    Are the internal speakers each tied to one of the channels (right/left?) If so, if physically matched, the right speaker is larger, so I'm wondering if the right channel is the primary, would it be louder, since it has the larger speaker? I know that all sounds silly, but in experimenting with mine, there are other quirky issues with the speakers.

    Randy I am well aware that using certain bands on radios that recieve but are not allowed to transmit on such said frequencies are illegal. I am aware that some certain said handhelds are "unlockable". This all being said are you aware of any base 50 watt radio with uhf/vhf/gmrs that are "unlockable" like some of their hand held counterpart so i could transmit on those three bands. I need to by several base radios and any info you have is greatly appreciated!
