Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to review the status of the Delhi-Katra Highway project on August 28. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) will provide an update on the project’s progress, which is encountering significant hurdles.
The development of the 600-kilometre highway, which spans 300 kilometres through Punjab, is facing delays due to disputes over land acquisition. Farmers in Punjab have reportedly refused to hand over land to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), causing project delays. Additionally, contractors and engineers working on the highway have been subjected to threats and assaults.
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on August 10, addressed Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, expressing concerns about the ongoing issues. Gadkari warned that if law and order do not improve, NHAI may cancel eight planned projects in Punjab. The letter highlighted that land possession issues persist in Ludhiana, Gurdaspur, and Jalandhar, with an 18-kilometre stretch still pending.
