In this ongoing "Ask a Public Adjuster" series, Kevin Godfrey, Founder & CEO of Long Island Public Adjusters, LLC, sits down and answers the question: "Can a Public Adjuster Be a Contractor?"
The answer is yes, and no.
A Public Adjuster can be a contractor as long as they are licensed and bonded per their state and local municipality laws. This could be a side hustle or primary source of income, with the PA license acting as the side hustle.
However, a Public Adjuster should not act as a contractor on any claim that they are hired to adjust. This is a conflict of interest and could potentially lead to issues, including possible claim denial for the insured. In many states, it is actually illegal, while other states may be okay with it - as long as the PA, in writing, discloses their multiple roles to the insured.

    CHANNEL:
Hi there! New to our channel? If so, here is what you need to know -- I talk about all things related to insurance claims, specifically Public Adjusters a LOT (I know super boring stuff unless of course, you need one - then I can assure you, it's entirely riveting) so I use this channel to explore how to hack residential and commercial claims to help you maximize your claim settlement.
    What is a PUBLIC ADJUSTER:
A public adjuster is a professional claims handler/ claims adjuster who advocates for the policyholder in appraising and negotiating a claimant's insurance claim - both residential and commercial.
    PUBLIC ADJUSTER VS. INSURANCE ADJUSTER:
A Public Adjuster is an adjuster that works directly for you and protects your interests. The Insurance Adjuster is hired by the Insurance company to protect their interests and keep the claim payout as low as possible.
Insurance companies will hire a team of adjusters, experts, and mediators to provide you the lowest possible payout. In contrast, Public Adjusters assemble their own team to expedite the claims process, maximize the settlement, and get you back into your home or business.
    PUBLIC ADJUSTER PROS AND CONS:
Like any industry, there are pros and cons to hiring a Public Adjuster, but if utilized, a Public Adjuster correctly with experience can be critical in helping homeowners and business owners get the money they deserve and are owed.
    Pros:
Don't get paid until you do

Does not work for the insurance company
    Can reopen denied claims
Uses same insurance software, such as Xactimate, for apples to apple comparison
    Cons:
You could get a Public Adjuster with little to no experience
Your Public Adjuster may dodge you after the 3 day cancellation period has ended
Your Public Adjuster could have an ulterior motive
Make sure you trust the Public Adjuster before signing with them!
