- Fairport Convention performing the album "Liege and Lief" live with the opening track "Come All Ye" at the Cropredy festival in 2007. Messers Nichol, Swarbrick, Mattacks, Thompson and Hutchings are present with Chris While admirably standing in for Sandy Denny. Classic performance.
God, man. "Liege & Lief." I'm 10 years too young and feel like I'm the old grandpa telling kids about this record. So great.
Lucky those who were there for this! I saw them do this at Manchester Students Union with Sandy. it was like being in the Stretford End at Man U. Lovely Ray almost passed out from too many Newkie Browns. I missed the last bus (shades of Walking the Long Miles Home) and walked 10 miles back to Bolton with Big Dave, RIP. A great memory.
This is a truly fantastic album on vinyl. I play it all the time along with my Hendrix , Solomon Burke, and Burning Spear roots reggae. 3 cheers, enjoy!
Chris While does an excellent job. Thank you for this recording.
The lady singing did a great job! She is the first person I’ve heard that comes close to Sandy Denny.
Chris While
My brother and I were there.what a gig
Thank you Chris While
No thank you Chris. I can't let beautiful moments go by undocumented. Both you and Kellie are superb talents and more people need to know about you, so in my small way I hope that what I do helps you be seen by a wider audience. The magic and specialness of Cropredy needs to be captured for posterity, as I often forget the detail. It brings a big smile to my face to relive these songs and tunes.😀
The band & Sandy performed this at the
Horden Pavillion Sydney in 1977- shortly after a wonderful concert at the Sydney Opera House. Me, a young teenager, will forever remember Sandy helming a wonderfully shambolic band of slightly more disciplined folkies. God bless her generous, undisciplined heart.
JUST....WOW!
I absolutely love this track and having realised again what an immense contribution Swarb made on the recording (his singular dark magic style in the verses especially - also on Reynardine), that I looked for something on UA-cam to educate my Facebook mates. Disappointing to see him drowned out by the guitars - ditto Chris Leslie some years later. Perhaps it was just that an audience member recorded it standing in front of the guitar amps? Such a great song and album. RIP Swarb.
Yes, the recording is a bit thin, almost like AM radio, with the singer buried further than her voice deserves. The chorus thin. And Swarbrick deserves much better for all the reasons you say. Still a nice listen.
I had Liege and Lief when I was 16 and first electrifying my violin. He was one of my early inspirations, and it was his added electric fiddle stylings that complemented the guitars so much (and added to the folk feeling in these songs).
I was there 😁😁😁
This line up contains three quarters of an Albion Band!!
One day years ago I was walking down the road with my boy who was about 10 or so. I was singing this song, and he said, Daddy, that song's so boring. I said, Really? Well it so happens I'm going to see the man that wrote this song tonight. (RT was performing nearby that night.) Shall I tell him what you said? No! No! he cried, looking at me terrified.
I have been a Fairport Convention since the days of Sandy Denny. This is my all time favorite Fairport track. Pity the sound system was so poor that the band ended up drowning out the lead vocalist.
Wonderiffic+ whose the Singstress ?
Sound system for the lrad singer went default..the melody was excellent.
Shame , couldn’t hear her . But what I did sounded like Sandy) ( ish)
Who is the female singer?
Chris While. Google 'While and Matthews'.
Sorry is it just me, where the he'll are the vocals?
Considering the sound was recorded via a 2007 camcorder I would hardly be expecting an Abbey Road vocal spread...
@@mysticgeneie4668 There's a great BBC recording of this concert - vocals are crystal clear. I'll see if I can dig it out
At 3:24 she asks the sound desk to raise her vocals
First song, someone slap the sound man. A little better toward the end. That's what sound check is for....
10 e lode
Appreciate that it's a live recording , but the sound quality of this is awful. Video work is a bit of a disaster as well.
Such a lovely tune. Such dumb lyrics. Deserves new ones.
