Fun fact: The original Jekyll and Hyde novel was a lot more of a mystery novel then a horror novel. Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde being the same person was actually a big twist that wasn't revealed until the end of the story.
"Jekyll and Hyde were the same person" was the original "Dumbledore dies"
agreed...to this day, i still dont understand why ppl see it as a horror.
@@bluewolvesstudios2822 Well, just try to put yourself in Dr Jekyll's shoes. Your a kind and curious scientist trying to help people, but during an attempt on an experiment, you loose all self control, being taken over by your inner id, the selfish and violent side of your personality. Unable to change back until the concoction wears off, yet every morning you wake up to find out that you have committed various heinous crimes while under the concoctions control. In a way it's more of a psychological thriller then horror, but not everyone knows about PT, so horror is a good blanket term.
@@MaliciousXYZ Dr. Jekyll didn't want to help people. He was severely depressed and wanted to find a way to bring out the "fun" side og himself. Jekyll willingly turned into a monster to have fun. But in the end he felt bad for the awful things he did and ended his own life.
@@StitchRizz90 thanks for updating me, lol, its been 2 decades since I read the children's school version of the book, so I probably was just remembering the edited version, and mixing in the part from the movie The Page Master where Dr Jekyll was kinda helpful before transforming.
This is a more accurate representation of Mr. Hyde than most recent movies that have him as hulking behemoth. In the book his described as a small, twisted man who seems to radiate hatred and madness.
Technically that was just in League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, both movie and comic. But they did accurate in Once Upon a Time. Loved Sam Witwer as Hyde
I REALLY liked his portrayel in Tom Cruise's Mummy movie. One of the few things I actually liked about the film.
@@moviemakr3938 Also he was hulking in Van Helsing from 2000. He wasn't in it for very long though.
@@breezyhillproductions349 Whoops, I forgot about that.
@@db456u8 umm.. look at the box office numbers. Boom proved wrong.
I swear, this one scene scared me to death when I was a kid. But other than that, The Pagemaster was one of my favorite movies growing up as a kid, and to this day, it’s still one of my favorites.
same
Same this is one of the few scenes I remember as a child always scaring me
I think the Moby Dick scene freaked me out more than this scene
Cartoon network Disney nickelodeon and any kids cartoonist will never make THIS scary for kids now day today kids are p##yies today
The scene where Dr. Hyde is shown from bird’s eye view and where the flaming candle falls down brings up thoughts of Christian hell. This is because: They say that hell is like a lake of fire (think of the fiery candle previously mentioned) and Dr. Hyde is evil like the devil, a being they say you’ll meet in hell. Also, just as hell is “down there”, Dr. Hyde is “down there” on the floor below.
Do you agree or disagree? Why or why not?
The plot twist is that was actually just an appletini, Jekyl is just a very violent drunk and a teetotaler.
There’s sulphuric acid in appletini?
@@mushroomhead3619 This is a special appletini, it doesn't like wood very much
Lmfao I'll never look at this scene again the same
You have a point
What's a teetotaler?
1:47 This shot stands out to me as one of the most brilliantly done of any animation. It instantly burns itself and the horror into your mind. How many of you still vividly remember that candle falling past him all these years later?
I loved horror movies as a kid. My faves were Tremors, Jaws, Predator, Congo (which isn't a horror, but it's terrifying), and The Ghost and the Darkness, but this is the only time it was so scary that I wanted an adult to FF for me and it's specifically because of the candle falling part.
The candle falling by his face gave me legit chills
I know what you mean, but for me it's the scene in the Prince of Egypt where he's holding a torch to the wall that stands out in my mind as a great animated scene when it comes to use of lighting and shadows.
came here to say this!
I could not remember a thing about this love, not one detail except for this scene. It’s been banging around in my head for over a decade and I was finally able to correlate it. Shows the power of the scene for sure.
You should thank horror for knocking off the drink from your hand adventure he saved your life.
My man just wanted the olive
0:16 now look you've done!?
I agree. That drink is very dangerous. If I were in that scene, I would say, "Dr. Henry Jekyll! I know what you're gonna do! Your on drugs & also about to turn yourself into the horrible ugly scary mean stupid Mr. Edward Hyde. Guys, grab him & tie him up!!!"
God this scene scared me half to death as a kid, still kinda creeps me out to this very day XD
i always had to hide behind the armchair in the living room when i was little
Dude same
Yep nothing like a little childhood trauma to start your day, am I right
It's funny, looking at the scene going " I mean he's kinda creepy, menacing for sure but not that bad *candle falls by his face*......nevermind,that's legitimately creepy, can't explain it but that moment is nightmare enducing.XD
@@simonhassnilsson7009 I did the same thing.
Ah yes, The Pagemaster. One of those movies I know I’ve watched but can’t remember a single thing about it.
Picked it up cheap as an adult and gave it a watch again. Turns out this scene was the most memorable part.
I thought i was the only one
drugs have that effect on people
Exactly! My grammie had the book and this movie was basically my entire childhood though I can’t remember anything about it 😂😂
2 minds think alike
You know when you can look at a scene from a supposed “kids movie” and just *KNOW* that it traumatized someone. Yeah this is one of those scenes.
I was one of those traumatized kids. :D
I came here at 30 still freaking out about this scene.
@@F1god04 same😖
I am here because my wife said this movie traumatized her as a kid. nightmares and stuff. I had to see what did it.
Yep including scenes from black cauldron, raggedy ann and andy musical and return to oz.
I know it’s supposed to be freaky, but i loved this scene as a kid. The color change to the dark green and his voice just stuck with me in my memories, I’m so glad i looked this movie up
Same!! We were some different kids for sure to enjoy this
Horror yelling "Sanctuary!" might be a reference to The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
I also think even his design is based on Quasimodo.
It definitely is.

To tell the truth, I had no idea that the legendary Leonard Nimoy (RIP) voiced Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde in this animated movie until I did some research about the movie many years later.
other Star Trek Alum VA 'd for this movie, too. Patrick Stewart and Whoopie Goldberg.
@@kefka3 wait....Sir Patrick Stewart VA'd for this!?!? Which character!?
@@mitchellneu Adventure. Whoppi Goldberg voiced Fantasy.
@@usamazahid3882 I caught Whoopi Goldberg as Fantasy, but Patrick Stewart voiced Adventure!? Whoa...I can’t even tell it’s him. Shows how talented an actor/voice actor he really is...
@@mitchellneu yeah, and not only that but not only Frank did the infamous voices of Horror, Megatron, Scooby-Doo and Fred Jones among others, but next to Leonard Nimoy, he took over the voice role of Galvatron after Nimoy voiced him in the 1986 Transformers Movie too.
Ah, the most terrifying scene of 1990s animation
In terms of animated films (excluding musical numbers) I rank the Elephant Graveyard scene from the Lion King and the Termite Scene from Antz to be a bit higher then this, but this is still up there.
No, that honor goes to the Batman TAS episode "Fear of Victory" scene where Scarecrow drugs a thug who's threatening him.
‘The name is Mr HYDE!!!!’ That gave me nightmares as a kid lol
Same here too. Mr. Hyde is very dangerous, mean, ugly, stupid & scary.
Me: Ed?
Its amazing how many Star Trek alums are in this; Patrick Stewart (Jean Luc Picard), Whoopi Goldberg (Guinan) and Leonard Nemoy (Spock). Didn't realize this until I was older.
Robert Picardo, the EMH on Star Trek: Voyager, also voiced one of the pirates in a brief part.
@@hungrydragonvsfrightendhob7799
Exactly
Whoopi Goldberg also appeared in Cinderella (1997) alongside Brandy (Norwood) as the titular character whose friend is definitely Whitney Houston
Christopher Lloyd counts as well since he played the Klingon Kruge in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock.
Hyde attacking with the cane reference when He killed someone in the book
You mean, Sir Danvers Carew?
@@usamazahid3882 yes
Mr. Hyde is a killer. He's very mean, dangerous, ugly, scary & stupid.
I always like that despite Richard Tyler and Horror’s pleas to not have Dr. Jekyll drink the potion, he ignores them and does it anyway.
His transformation, however, always terrified me, especially when he grabs Richard Tyler and we see his hand slowly transforming and Richard slowly looks up terrified. This movie is still one of my favorites
I believe and thank this movie for why I never get rid of a single book I ever get. It’s honestly brilliant and beautifully metaphorical for what books do for us. They help us connect to those parts of ourselves.
This is, without a doubt, the scariest version of Mr Hyde I've ever seen, even after finally reading the book and seeing other IPs adapting the story. The sinister laugh, *that* jumpscare, the scene with him hanging from the chandelier as he tries to take Horror down with him, he ended up representing the horror genre in the best way possible, even though the original novel could hardly be considered a horror novel. This is a version of Mr Hyde that scares me, even as an adult.
RIP James Horner, the composer for the movie's soundtrack
RIP Leonard Nimoy, voice of Jekyll and Hyde
Leonard Nimoy is a cousin of mine but I never met him.
He did Titanic as well.
@@blue-sea8901 and Braveheart too.
Never saw that movie before.
This scene scared the shit out of me as a kid.
Same. I always hid
@@CandraCosplays same here.
This was by far my only favourite scene in the movie, the way its composited and shot always stood out to me. I'm surprised they never did a animated Jekyll and Hyde film with the same sort quality animation as this segment.
I'm more surprised there hasn't been another animated film since the 1986 animated adaptation of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde made by Burbank Films Australia.
1:47 unironically that was a cool as hell shot
It might be the best shot in all history of horror. Its low key iconic.
0:53 That haunting Hyde laugh though.
Me: Dr. Jekyll? Dr. J?
1:04 *My name is... MR. HYYDDE!!*
This scene scared the crap out of me when I was a kid, and I haven’t watched The Pagemaster ever since.
Same here. That scene always scares me a lot.
I love how the light changes as dr.Jekyll drinks the concoction that transforms him into the hideous mr. Hyde. How the music drops out then storms back in as he grips his chest, adding to the tension of the scene. Scared the hell outta me as a kid but also enraptured me to love horror as a genre of storytelling.
Well it could've been a lot worse, they could've ran into Dorian Gray
Yeah!
or worse, a Stephen King character.
Fun Fact: In the book, the boy and the books actually run into the Frankenstein monster. Sadly, this wasn't included in the film.
@@rt1cl3367 Was he in the game?
@@jareththegoblinking3191 yes and no. Depends on which version you're referring to. PC yes. SNES it's more of just his fist
Man I missed Leonard nimoy I wished he would be still be alive today and voicing more characters with his awesome voice
That scene from The Pagemaster always scares me a lot.
I wish the same thing about Powers Boothe...day after day after day... 😢 💔 I love that man, & miss him dearly! 😭
I was so scared from this scene, I had this horrible recurring nightmare about Mr. Hyde. Probably the scariest thing I ever saw as a kid. Finally got the courage to rewatch it almost 30 years later lol! It’s still pretty freaky.
My name is.... Mr. Hyde!!!! I love this part for some reason
The Pagemaster may have had a few struggles in the making, but it's still very good movie to watch, especially with its beautiful song, "Whatever You Imagine".
The Jekyll & Hyde character isn't a very compelling character design wise, but it's a cool representation of losing self-control. I didn't think of it like that 'til now, but I kinda like that perspective now.
This character was voiced by Leonard Nimoy, and so Don Bluth drew the character after him.
I think I figured out what scared me so much about this scene when I was a kid. It's his insane grin. All wide and toothy, a very predatory smile. It's the kind of look you never want to see someone make in a dark alley.
That's Leonard Nemoy as Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
From Star Trek
I really missed Leonard nimoy and his voice so much
Sentinel Prime?
@@GodzillaLordofallMonsters He did a better performance as Galvatron.
TheSonOfTheDragon yeah he did, but i brought him up because I just watched Dark of the Moon

I loved this movie as a kid. It's a very underrated childhood classic.
This Dr jekyll and Mr hyde is what sparked my curiosity and love for Dr jekyll and Mr hyde as well as my nightmares when I was a kid, it was that Mr Hyde, I remember, I remember it so dang vividly like it was yesterday lol.
One of the greatest moments in animation history, so vivid!
XD horror used to get on my nerves when I was little, and this clip reminded me why. He didn't even try to get untangled, just sat there and instantly made someone come get him. Them chains looked loose but no effort on his part to actually try.
Lol I had no compassion
I thought the point was that Horror was not intelligent.
@@tylerlamb9930 yeah it is and it got on my nerves anyway. Like he's smart enough to know he's in danger and being stuck is bad and he's shown self preservation skills but he suddenly becomes dead weight and relies on others to get him out of a situation he could have easily got out if himself.
But thats just me and my critical thinking
He lived in a world of constant horror and sadness. I suspect he simply accepted that he was doomed to die, so why try to save himself? Then he suddenly meets this band of adventures who wanted his help? I imagine he was feeling extremely overwhelmed. When you get like that, you tend to seek handouts in extreme situations - in other words, you don't think straight. Look to the Saw movie theories for evidence of this. "They thought they were doomed to die, but could have all survived if they..."
He was terrified, and literally the embodiment of stories that have no happy ending so accepted his fate.
But yeah.... even so. Poor little guy had moments of. Common man. Story isn’t over yet.
@@justincarawan-carawanco.pu1639 yeah definitely. I just don't have patience for personalities like that.
This scene scared the hell outta me when I was a kid 😂
My favorite part of the movie! I loved the entire movie itself but this was what *really* made me love horror. The well-done maniacal laugh, watching the candle briefly make his menacing face glow as he laughs and attempts to drag everyone down with him - *chefs kiss* It's been well over two decades since I saw this movie and this is what I remember - everytime.
I remember this movie, this is one of my favorite Macaulay Culkin movies

0:53 That laugh alone haunted me as a kid
The low candle lighting in the pit to reveal mr. Hyde still creeps me out
"Come on, you've got to help him!" "But I really don't feel like it"

0:25-0:29- I love how the color changes into a blue silhouette when Dr. Jekyll drinks the formula to change into Mr. Hyde.
0:53- His laugh though makes me weak as hell lol

I can imagine Sir Patrick Stewart really enjoyed voicing Adventure!
I agree. In Moby Dick, he played Captain Ahab. In The Pagemaster where Richard Tyler, Adventure, Horror & Fantasy went into the Moby Dick scene, Adventure says, "He's my kind of guy."
This scene scare me as a child, but I love this film, here's to 26 years
Never found this scene unsettling and scary, but the film itself makes me cry in nostalgia more or less. Hearing the soundtrack in this film is too much for me more so than this Jekyll, Mr. Hyde scene. Feel the same way about EDWARD SCISSORHANDS, THE SNOWMAN, or TOY STORY.
Oh God, this scene terrified me when I was young, but the animation was excellent.
I just wanna say i probably seen this movie over a hundred times when i was young ( like 4 to 8 years old) needless to say i think it is great for this age.
I feel like in the story world stuff like this resets. Like Hyde is eventually Jekyll again, having not drank the potion. But eventually has to drink it again. He didn’t so much as ignore the warnings, as much as how he was bound by the story to drink the potion. The story world resetting, is based on how. When you finish reading a book. You can turn back to page 1 and start rereading it again.
This is one of my favorite scenes from The Pagemaster!
Same! I'm a Pagemaster fan!
Oh the memories!!!!
When I first saw this movie I was so young that I don’t think I even knew what the word “horror” meant, so when they went I to this I did not at all expect it to be so scary and hid under the couch and cried
I still have the VHS tape and player from my childhood, I'm glad I still do
I had forgotten how good the animation of this movie is!
Being a lot older now and I actually read the book and I thought of this scene and how it scared the hell out of me, and it still does lmao and that laugh he does is a thing of nightmares
