This is excellent and something I have spoken about with my psychologist. I was diagnosed bipolar and medicated on poly pharmacy for 40 years. Now been off everything for almost 4 years. Physical withdrawal lasted about 2 years to finish, once I was fully off meds, but I also saw there's been a whole long period really lasting longer where I have been trying to understand now who is this person within, now diagnosis overturned, meds not suppressing emotions which I have known since I was 20. My approach with my therapist has been not to force anything but to simply allow things to unfold as they needed to over time. Not to fight the emotions when they have been difficult and challenging but to also understand that being human has a vast range of emotional experiences that come with it. The more you fear them and try to fight and push them away the worse they will be the next time. And the next time will come, it might be different but we cannot avoid it. You will build resilience so that its not so difficult again. However one also needs to learn how to keep one's self safe during this time, 5 mins or even one minute at a time, and you will come through.
Motivation is also important and interestingly it won't just come if you just wait for it to appear, but by actually doing something, however small , motivation miraculously appears! But I also know that someday I'm not going to be able tovdo anything however hard I try and that's ok to and accepting that.
Finally now I'm back doing something I love, archaeology and for the first time in nearly 30 years I'm back on site and in the sunshine down a hole in a 3000 year old ditch and all I can hear is banter from my fellow diggers and the skylarks high in the sky above, its been worth it in many ways but I'm also still working through a lot!
