Serious question time. You seem to be avoiding the big one. Corporal, what do we do if the tabasco runs dry??? What about moral? Do we carry chilli powder and attempt to make more? Once made, how do we get our mix back in the bottle through the tiny hole? Surely this is the ultimate bushcraft skill. I fear the last drop.

My Squad Members thought I was nuts for carrying a propane torch In My Alice Pack. You can smell a bunch of trioxane heat tabs 100 yards away. Light that scentless squirrel fart gas torch on low after being cold and wet for a while under a poncho and experience a Marine Corps Sauna you will never forget! Many Other Uses! Keeping Lifeboat matches in The handle Of my Buckmaster For almost forty years that haven't exploded yet ,and every grunt worth his salt has a scentless candle or two, But I met a few had soap on a rope! LOL, OOH RAH ,Outstanding Bushcraft Corporal! You Rock!

The "sandpaper" on the matchbox is not just plain sandpaper. It contains red phosphorous. When the match is struck, a small amount of the red phosphorus on the striking surface is converted into white phosphorus, which then ignites. The heat from this ignites the match head which is usually made up of an oxidizer; most commonly potassium chlorate. Strike anywhere have a different type of phosphorous as well as potassium chlorate in the tip, that ignite with friction.

For matchbooks, I fold the flap back over, place the match in between the strike strip and the flap, apply a little pressure, and then pull the match out. Works great!

    A pocket survival kit:
    -3 tea candles
-30 feet of masons twine or other strong, small diameter, synthetic cordage.
-Bic lighter (you should have 2 or 3 more in your other pockets, if not, put 2 in the kit)
-Strips of rubber (bicycle innertubes cut up) for wet weather fire starting
-small bottle of iodine water treatment tabs
    -12 aspirin and 12 ibuprofen
-heavy duty large contractor trash bag rolled up tight with several rubber bands around it
    -RAT style tourniquet
-small amount of high energy sweet food, even just sugar cubes or some small candies, or dried fruit and nuts. Enough to pick you up if you 'bonk'.
-1 qt or liter waterbag rolled up tight.
-small knife...the small Mora knives are ideal for this... something with a 2.5 inch to 3.5 inch blade and is very light weight.
-small (high quality) LED flashlight (olight, streamlight, etc)
-small, lightweight Suunto or other brand name, good quality compass.
-i like to add a small, lightweight polypropylene beanie stocking cap rolled up tight as well.
-also carry a few doses of any critical meds that you take.
-asthma inhalers if you use them
-2 or 3 antiseptic wet wipes
-wrap the bic lighters with several feet of good quality duct tape (gorilla tape)
Double ziplock bag this kit and put it in the cargo pocket on your shorts or pants or in a jacket pocket, you might need to split it into 2 bags for 2 pockets, but it should be on you all the time (not in a backpack) if you are taking an extended hike or stalking an animal, etc...
Everything there is straight forward in what it can be used for.
Anyhow, this is something i carry and i am someone that has been hunting, hiking, mountain climbing, backcountry skiing, fishing, backpacking, and involved in search and rescues, etc in the rockies very vigorously for about 40 years. This little kit can save your life. Every year out here, dozens of people get lost, including very experienced people like me and they die from exposure to the elements or from medical issues, etc...this kit would save 99% of them.

Back in the day, our little band of grade school delinquents would split matches (verboten) and use them to light large-caliber firecrackers (really verboten). "Ohio Blue Tip" strike-anywhere matches worked well on zippers, too.

Years ago, snowshoeing in -30C. Wanted to start a fire to warm up. I was in the bush, but there was a bit of wind. The Bic lighter could not do it. A wooden match did. It has a larger flame and you can stick it further in the tinder. I carry a lighter and also some matches in a plastic bag always.

    • @tenchraven
      @tenchraven 2 місяці тому +3

If you're using strike anywhere, it takes all the white tip off. Had that thought years ago. Try a bit of 1200 grit sandpaper, but try it before you bet your life on it. Modern strike anywheres are a pale shadow of those from 30 years ago. And it won't work at all with safety matches, you need the red phosphorus in the striker, it as much chemistry as friction. Or storm matches.

    • @samwilliams1142

The only reason we pack matches in our young'uns kits is for practice. In the event matches were all they could scavance or purchase in an emergency, they should be proficient in the use of matches. Beautiful Daughter needs this video badly, she has a fear of getting burned. Matches could be used to trade with others. To be totally honest, matches in the Philippines are some if the worst I have ever used. What we do is save the small plastic jars that KATINKO is supplied in. Katinko is a pain relieving muscle and joint rub. The jars are approximately 1 3/4 inches (4.5 cm) high and hold the small wooden matches perfectly without any trimming. We can squeeze about one and a half boxes ( 40 + or - matches/box) of matches plus four of the striker strips from the side of the match box.into each jar. We place two of the strikers face to face (four in all) to prevent accidental ignition. I add a thin gasket to insure no moisture enters the containers. Shawn is correct, there are so many better options but if a match is all you have, know how to use it.

Another (better) way of lighting matches is to put them between your index and middle fingers with the head facing toward you. Push down on the head with your thumb as you're striking it. As it lights, your hand is naturally cupped around it, blocking any wind. You can then bring your other hand to also cup around it making a very effective windscreen. I did it that way for years when I couldn't afford a Zippo and disposable lighters weren't a thing yet (yes, there was a time, long ago). Thanks for the videos!

This is especially true winter camping here in Canada! I have also lite a strike anywhere with my thumb nail. I don't anymore after the phosphorous ignited under my nail and it burned and burned.

Affects of humidity? Decades ago, while camping for several days in the rain, (backpacking stove, and 2 metal waterproof match containers of wood "kitchen" matches) I discovered the match heads absorbed humidity after the container had been briefly opened a few times, and would just "mush off the wood" when trying to light them. So even though they weren't directly exposed to raindrops or other water, only the first few matches used from each match container would actually light. A lighter is indeed a SMART thing to carry. :D (I started carrying a variety of "storm-proof/waterproof" matches as well as lighters after that. :D )
