The Ninth Legion - ASMR History of Legio IX Hispana

  • The Ninth Legion (Legio IX Hispana, also sometimes called the "Lost Legion") had a long history. It served under command of Julius Caesar during the First Century BC, on the side of Octavian in the civil war against Mark Antony and Cleopatra, was sent to Spain, Germania, Pannonia and Britain. In Roman Britain, it fought rebellions, including the rebellion of Queen Boudica in which it narrowly avoided destruction.
But its trace gets lost in Northern England in the early Second Century AD, which is highly unusual for such an important unit at a time when the Roman Empire was in good shape overall. Was it destroyed in Britain by Celtic tribes, sent to the Netherlands, or did it disappear in a later conflict, in Judea or Cappadocia? In this story, we look at the hypothesis and the historical context, which is a good opportunity to explore what Roman legions were, the conquest of Roman Britain and other aspects of Roman history.

The Ninth Legion mystery, known to lots of us from our childhood by the novel The Eagle of the Ninth, by Rosemary Sutcliff (and a movie I think w Joaquim Phoenix) has always been one of my favourite stories, so very happy that you’ve chosen to tell the story here. I so enjoy ur ASMR work, and always prefer to listen via youtube to watch the lovely calming videos that you make to go along with ur narration. I hope ur new channel is a success, I’ve just had a listen to a couple of videos, and commented; I really wish you well with it. Only …. don’t forget about us, will you? Part of what makes this channel so successful is exactly the things which you think might be off putting to a wider audience, your ‘dubious’ english (it really isn’t!) and ur accent. Combined with the range of interesting stories, they make the perfect ASMR; ur services are still greatly needed here, so don’t leave us behind, please. I did wonder why you haven’t included a link back to this channel? Might be an idea.

How about death by administration? Hadrian’s Wall was built about 60 years after the Londinium defeat. If new soldiers were added to the legion (new recruits), they would have been nearing retirement around the same time. They retired to the local area on land “provided” by Rome and started (continued?) to raise families. The defence on the area turned from Roman legion to local troops that were the sons of the soldiers. This deterioration of defence cause troubles, which lead to the building of Hadrian’s Wall. When the wall was built, the local troops were then enough and what was left of the ninth were sent to join another legion on the continent. Death by administration.

I doubt that contemporary writers would have "bragged" about the defeat of the 9th Legion, explaining the lack of references. I think that Britain was always intended an area for retired Roman soldiers. It is possible that so many soldiers retired in Britain that it was practical to reorganize the legions with the result that the 9th Legion disappeared. By having large numbers of veterans located on the northern border, it is probable that Rome thought that the retirees could form a militia to protect their homes and families that American colonists formed to protect themselves against the indigenous population. Hadrian's Wall served as more than a protection for the Romans. It was a significant way to tax imports and exports. It indicates there was enough contact between the Caledonians and Romans to make such trade sustainable. Could the Roman Legions have been reconstituted as a form of "Border Patrol" with small units serving in outposts along Hadrian's Wall?
