  • The top tank-killer of Germany's WWII fighting force, the Sturmgeschütz III was also Germany's most produced in number of any fully tracked armored fighting vehicles. Built on the successful Panzer III chassis, the StuG III was produced first in late 1942 and was continued through to the end of the war, seeing service on all of Nazi Germany's fronts.
    The rounded cast 'Saukopf' or 'Pig's Head' gun mantlet seen here is a feature of late production StuG III G, and was designed to offer more protection. StuG of varying types saw service after WWII as well, most notably in Yugoslavia and by Syria through the Six-Day War.
    Weighing in at a skimpy 24 tons, the StuG III G was built for a crew of 4. It was equipped with a 75 mm StuK 40 L/48 main cannon and 1 or 2 x 7.92 mm MG34/42 machine guns. With a V12 Maybach HL 120 TR M 300 hp engine, it could reach a top speed of ‎40 km/h (25 mph) and had a range of about 150 km (96 mi). With a distinct low profile and lacking a turret, armor ranged from 80 mm on the front to 30 mm on the sides and 11-17 on the top and rear of the vehicle.
    This vehicle resides in the workshop at the National Armor and Cavalry Collection at Ft. Benning in GA, USA. Connect with NACC here: / nationalarmorandcavalr...

    I had the chance to get around and inside some of the beautiful Saumur's museum panzers. It's another world in there, very interesting to see all the stuff inside but also asking myself HOW can you do your work in those tiny compartments during the war ?!

    This classic Stug has the coaxial machine gun mount fitted in its cast armoured pigs head , to stave off the advancing enemy Infantry masses!
    Looks like a 3.7cm / L45 main gun off an early model Panzer III in front of the Stug.

    I reckon the reason the top of the fenders is just red primer is the vehicle has been delivered to the unit in red primer and over spraied with cammos with the schurtzen fitted so there was not point to paint the parts not visible. Probably also the lower part of the hull, the return rollers, and other bits weren't painted as well. In 1945 it was a waste of precious paint.

    The StuG III and Hetzer were the two deadliest anti-tank killers for Germany in WWII, yet very small. The Huns never figured out that more of these small vehicles was the ticket, for better overall success at destroying Allied armour.

    • @fwinkler112

      "Huns"? What? You're on the wrong war with that one: think WWI for that term. WW2 usually used others instead.

    I never noticed a gun mount on a Stug before. But I guess a lot of the Stugs I’ve seen had the short barreled gun. I don’t recon they need an outside gun rest for the short barreled gun. I know that gun mount or barrel rest isn’t the correct term for it, but the proper name fails me right now. Kids, don’t do drugs.

    Have you considered creating popups of info/stats/stuff that point out aspects of the tank as you go round? I know you have all that stuff in the description but how many people look at the description? I just feel the video itself could be much more with that. A lot more work I guess too. • @vtbmwbiker
    @vtbmwbiker 5 років тому

    Ok-- couple of technical questions--- does a MK III/STUG have torsion bar suspension? I assume based on the trailing arms it does and does it seem that the motion stops above each trailing arm are a bit close? Or, is it sitting low due to age? Also, at around 2:13 there seems to be a lifting hook or some kind on the front of the casemate-- seems small to lift the entire structure off or was this normal? Thin metal rack on the engine deck? Any illumination for what it was? Not the side skirt stuff but what looks like a bigger storage rack.

    • @fwinkler112
      @fwinkler112 3 роки тому

      That's exactly what it was: a storage rack as there was literally no room inside the tank for extras, personal gear or anything else that needed to come along. Those metal plates with the large bolts sticking out sideways were for mounting extra road wheels. STUG IIIs did use torsion bars, much like old VW Bugs did, and they probably just sagged due to age and lack of maintenance.

      There isn’t any ‘they’- this is my own channel! I do these trips with limited time (about 5 hrs of film time possible every 5 months...) and wanted to show as many vehicles off as I could. Plus I’m awkward as hell and hate being in front of cameras. There will be another trip very soon which will be rather longer and some time for live Q+A with the prototype American heavies, a handful of the German WWII vehicles and some tank interiors as well. I will show up in due time :) thank you!

      It’s planned to work into for the future. My trips out to benning are super short, due to my ‘real job’ schedule and so I try to pack as much content in as little time as possible. Getting video up and some cool vehicles out there for people to see was the first little chapter. NACC Archive Data is a tremendous resource alone- doing the research and putting together all the info and then getting the shots and THEN editing would be a ton of hours I don’t have just for one tank vid. (I’m a part time creator and twitch is the main focus for now.) In the next two weeks there will be some live tank talks with Q+A over probably the American prototype heavies and some of the German vehicles seen in walkarounds. I have a longer trip planned and some more idea of what to produce this time. So you’ll be seeing and hearing more in the next series :) as demand has increased so will the variety and depth of content. thank you!
