@@Apeironx3e yea, we need also more sea scorpions, giant apex predatory shrimps, early amphipians and also, little more mention of propaleozoic era periods, like giant snowball earth.
Walking With Monsters was my formal introduction to Dimetrodon, and it'll always hold a special place in my heart for that. So glad you covered it! Apparently their behaviour was based off of Komodo dragons, which was purely speculative due to lack of information about their behaviour. Which is fair, as we don't yet know if Dimetrodon were good mothers who cared for their babies or ate them up after hatching without a second thought. My biggest complaint about that segment of WWM? It took place in Bromacker Germany, and the Dimetrodon species native to that region (D. teutonis) was only as big as a housecat. Much too small to be hunting Edaphosaurus! Otherwise, it was fair for its time, and it enjoyed how dramatic it was!
4:27 that run used to scare me bald, it was just so terrifying even though I had seen this specefic episode millions of times and knew what was going to happen.
I honestly want to see more Permian animals getting the spotlight and recognized as such. Synapsids are such cool and diverse animals, but they're always confused as just early dinos. I'd love to see them get more in the mainstream.
Apparently most people confused, because dimetrodon looks rather reptilian in appearance (while other nonmammalian synapsid looks kinda weird as they don't resemble anything with some vaguely reptilian-mammalian combination). Yet because they prehistoric and reptilian in appearance, synapsid must be a dinosaur according to some folk's logic
Hi Dino Guy, Little context before I comment, but I'm a paleontologist whose work focusses very heavily on Dimetrodon, specifically the large Texas species that your video focusses on. While we do have a trackway showing a pelycosaur highwalking the pelvic and pectoral anatomy as well as the limbs are strikingly similar to squamates and crocodilians in which the typical gait is a highly sprawled walk with occasional high walking or running for speed. Otherwise besides the "Late Permian" mishap this is a solid video and a good overview of what we know about Dimetrodon's appearance. Cheers, Nathan
Thank you for the Clarification! While doing my research, I was unable to find a clear consensus on the sprawled, semi sprawled, or upright position. You are exactly what I needed. And yes, I am still kicking myself over saying “Late Permian”. Im also currently doing research on Inostrancevia, so I think the two were swapped in my head surrounding that topic. I just wish I caught it while editing haha. Thank you for the comment!
that's cool to hear, a lot of people act like depicting Dimetrodon in a sprawling stance is a sin so I've seen a lot of depictions with it standing like a dog which was pretty ridiculous. Now all we need in Dimetrodon skin and we can know which depiction is best.
I love these "interpertation" videos! You should do giganotosaurus next, as its the opposite of Carcharodontosaurus, appearing a lot in movies but not in documentaries.
Just found your channel today and binged your videos. Good stuff. I could listen to you talk about dinosaurs all day. This is a big channel in the making, I can feel it. I’m posting this and you’re at 3.07k. I’m going to return to this comment in a few months to see how much you’ve grown. I bet you’re easily 30k before Christmas if you keep these videos pumping out. Cheers!
For a more recent appearance of Dimetrodon, it can also be found in the game Paleo Pines. One of three non dinosaur animals in that game alongside Postosuchus and Desmatosuchus.
True. In certain old B movie, where dimetrodon depicted by optically enlarged iguana with prosthetic sail it ridiculously so big maybe bigger than elephant while in the very first The land Before time movie dimetrodon (or dimetrodon like lizard) depicted with actual size or maybe smaller
Here’s a fun one: there was a live-action show in the ‘70’s called Land of the Lost that included a bunch of prehistoric animals. They must not have thought dimetrodon was intimidating enough on its own so they gave them the ability to breathe fire.
Dimetrodon a relative to us and A mascot in the Paleozoic including the Inostranscevia Dunkleosteus Anomalocaris and sacabambaspis also the great dying dying in the Permian towards the End
As both a dinosaur nerd, and Power Ranger fan. Dino-Thunder is my favorite out of all the Power Ranger series. Not only cause of Tommy Oliver being back, and the mentor of the group. But, cause of how cool the dinosaurs look, and the storyline.
Prehistoric life is so fascinating in that you can look at any particular point in history where we knew about Prehistoric Life and our entire perception changes I dunno if you take suggestions but one I would love to see you cover is Iguanodon As the second dinosaur ever found I feel looking at it could be a real good way to show how far our understanding of dinosaurs has come From the early days of those outdated statues to the 90s with WWD to today with stuff like JWE2 Either way keep up what you do and I'll keep tuning in
I'm surprsied you didn't cover the fire breathing Dimetrodon from the original Land of the Lost, given it's probably the only stop motion Dimetrodon out there. Excellent video!
A common MISinterpretation is that they were dinosaurs, but they weren’t. They lived and died tens of millions of years before even the earliest dinosaurs did, and they are more closely related to mammals than to birds or other reptiles.
In fairness, the Fantasia isnt that shrink-wrapped, and has a very dog like snout, hinting at it being closer to mammals. I'd say though, the snout actually looks more gorgonopsidy as a result. Very interesting.
I also must include that e you’ve forgotten about which was the Dimetrodon from Turok: Dinosaur Hunter which weirded miniguns on each side. Which sounds like something out of Dino Riders (which coincidentally was introduced in that show & toy line with hidden guns).
personally I think dimetrodon kinda looks like a dinosuar like creature. it reminds me of sevreal of my favorite dinosuar creatures. but still it would be neat to see more depictions of them and other pre dinosuar creatures. also you should do an episode on dinosuar nests or prehistoric nests in general and how they compaire to what we have found.
Honestly I don't really like leveling up my creatures to level 40 because the designs aren't accurate and that's coming from someone who is all about accuracy like me I prefer to stay away from level 40 to keep my creatures accurate
The game Path of Titans has a dimetrodon mod made by the group 'Wrath of Goliaths' thats in progress, and hot diggity damn is it good! Definitely should go check it out!
Fantasia? Were paleobiologists aware of the differences in time between dimetrodon, stegosaurus or tyrannosaurus in 1940? I am no expert but I don't think radiocarbon dating was a thing until the 50s or 60s? Also this comment is too serious. No mention of Dinoriders? They used the fin to hide the rider and a big ass laser canon. :)
3:50 Big oof, saying Dimetrodon is from the Late Permian when it’s from the Early Permian. I really wish more time periods got the spotlight they deserve in paleo media. Like apart from Dunk, how many people know about the Devonian? The Permian especially seems weirdly left out since you have saber toothed Gorgonopsids in the Late Permian, the absolute unit of Anteosaurus the largest land predator of the Paleozoic and the largest Synapsid land predator until Andrewsarchus, and then the Early Permian has all the sailed backed synapsids such as Edaphosaurus, Dimetrodon, and all of their relatives. Plus the Late Permian has the largest Amphibian to ever live with Prionosuchus. It really is a shame that they are all relatively ignored.
Dang, that’s why you make sure to listen to what you’re saying while editing haha. And I 100% agree. I’m holding out hope that the upcoming “Life on Our Planet” documentary spends a decent amount of time on life before the very popular dinosaurs.
Andrewsarchus wasn't the largest synapsid land predator. The high estimates given to it are based on outdated classification as a mesonychid and stem from scaling smaller mesonichids to fit its giant skull.
Yeah I doubt the Middle Permian will ever be covered by a documentary EVER, it's just the perfect period to skip over from Early to Late Permian, despite the fact it contains one of the most interesting formations like the one with Anteosaurus (Tapinocephalus Assemblage Zone)
@@PoliostasisI don’t know which is worse getting ignored like the Middle Permian and Middle Triassic, or you are only recognized for one thing despite everything else living there. Like Lystrosaurus in the Early Triassic and Dunk for the entirety of the Devonian.
