I have both of these cameras, Action 4 on 4k looks better than Gopro on 5.3k. Action 4 is easier to use, and better experience. The batteries are not the same. Action 4 last a lot longer than Gopro. It's not even close.
Yeah you’re right. I noticed the same thing. My prior testing when talking directly at the camera more closely made them sound the same. But listening back later with them mounted upside down on the chest mounts (how you always use them while riding) the DJI was much clearer and less muffled sounding. May also have to do with wind and how the cameras adjusts the gain when it senses wind.
Jeff - This is a REALLY good sales video! Pretty much EVERY aspect of these two units is discussed, displayed and highlighted in your typical, brutally/humorously honest manner. Dang - I'm not even shopping for a video camera, and now I want one!
Hey thanks Miles. I really appreciate the kind words. And if it makes you feel better, I didn’t really want another action camera until I made this video myself 😅
This was a way better video then I expected. So polished and clean yet still personable. I expected it to be good. This just felt.......mature. Reinforcing the positive bigness vibes for all my tail one gear. Lots o love
I'd go DJI for sure. There's a video setting now that GoPro offers that makes the peripheral views seem like they're glitching. Some of the You Tube riders use it and I can't watch the videos. Trips me out! Lol Great video Jeff.
Just today I ordered a DJI osmo action 4 camera for my son, it will be a gift for him since he is on MTB every day. Last year I bought him a Canyon Torque 6 and I think that camera will be a very big surprise for him.😊
I have a DJI Drone and 2 GoPros, and absolutely love the video from the DJI. I’ll definitely be trying the DJI action camera as well. The GoPro video right out of the box is not good IMO. You have to dig deep into to settings, and watch tons of UA-cam videos to get the settings right. My DJI Mini 3 Pro shoots flawless 4K video right out the box with no fiddling with settings. I would guess the action camera is the same way.
Totally agree. All the DJI’s I’ve tried have stock footage that’s really good whereas GoPro, like you said, only gets good after messing with setting all day.
Great review! My daughter and I purchased the first gen DJI Osmo Action, a couple days before our R2R run in the Grand Canyon, Aug. 2019. Not only do we still use that camera, but i purchased a 2nd one, a couple years ago so that we could each have our own. They were outclassing the GP's back then, and about $100 less. The only thing keeping me from owning the gen4 is that the gen1 still does such a great job... but, I'm liking that new mount system, chest strap, and remote mic with wind-stopper mic.
DJI has more midrange than the Gopro in the examples in this video. Voices sound better to me in this video when you are using the cameras for dialog. The gopro is more distant sounding. My job is being an audio engineer. They are very different from an audio perspective.
But overall I agree with you, more often the DJI audio sounds better.
The DJI is waterproof down to 18 meters (59 feet) and GoPro down to 10 meters (33 feet). So both as is are plenty waterproof for everything. Each have aftermarket housings for deep water scuba diving as well if you’re going real deep.
Killer video, super well done. I have had multiple GoPros and never got a new one after the 8 as they were just frustrating to use. Seems like they, and well DJI and Insta360, have come a long way. Might have to try one again. Those magnetic mounts are freaking sweet!
Thanks for this comparison. Been considering getting one again for multiple sports usage. Couple questions; 1) how have you found framing? I only had the original GoPro HD, and sometimes you wouldn’t have it pointed right, especially when you go from sitting to standing. It also didn’t have any screen or Bluetooth to help you out, purely a guess back then. 2) have you tried the Insta360 cameras? Either the 360 one or the traditional style Ace Pro?
Glad you like it! As for framing, this is much easier now since both these cameras have large front screens and rear screens. To consider, the DJI has a wider field of view by a bit. If you want a super view you can add a “Max lens mod” to the GoPro but it’s pretty expensive. Also, the DJI front screen has touch which is often really helpful and the GoPro front screen is not touch. And I haven’t had the chance to try the Insta360 stuff yet. Those also look compelling.
I use the Insta360 x3. The fact I don’t have to think about where it’s pointing makes it so I can enjoy the ride and never think about the fact I’m recording
Interested in this comparison, as i'm a bit nervous about the DJI. I recently bought (and returned!) an Osmo Action 3 as I thought the stablisation was terrible. Footage was blurry compared to my old GoPro 8 even on the highest 'RS+' setting. My home trails are natural, rooty and rocky trails where bike and body get bashed around alot. Would you say the stabilisation on the Osmo 4 is on par with the GoPro?
Honestly, it’s really hard to say one is better or worse than the other when it comes to stabilization. They both work substantially better than their predecessors. One of the key things with digital stabilization is how much light the camera can see. The DJI has a larger sensor, so it seems to hold on to image quality and stabilization in darker conditions better than the GoPro. But in brighter conditions, both seem to work, nearly the same. It’s also important to consider how you’re mounting the camera. I think you would be very impressed with either one of these when comparing them to either of the older models. But if you really want flawless image quality and stabilization, the best thing is a gimbal.
Great video. I've been looking at the Osmo 4. I have been using an older Hero 7 but I can't stand it. After watching your video I think I'm going for the Osmo 4.
It really depends on your budget. The Osmo action 4 will be amazing for your use case and is the best camera when considering its low price point. However, if you wanted to get something less expensive, you could likely find a used GoPro hero 10 or Osmo action 3 that would be, very cheap and still great cameras just a couple generations back.
I’ve found the Freewell polarized ND filters boost the performance of my GoPro footage. Also about the 180° shutter rule with a GoPro, it doesn’t like it, I’ve found 30 framerate needs 120 shutter 😅 I’ve made a video about this
Glad you liked it! Yes. All footage from each camera was shot on 4k30, default settings with no adjustments of any kind in post. I did this to try and get the most realistic comparison of how these cameras work right out of the box.
And yet here I am using session5 that is pretty ancient due to weight. Plus its an absolute tank and it goes on my drone weekly. That aside DJI seems like a better value, but still has that overblown look to it, I guess it was on auto?
Yeah the DJI stock setting was here. It is a bit bright on the default settings. But that’s an easy thing to adjust + it films in Dlog if you’re really concerned about dialing in the color.
Competition is always good for us customers. Add Insta 360 ... GoPro really has to make a noticeable upgrade and bigger sensor for GoPro 13 to keep up. Low light is not competitive any more. Have no experiences with GoPro 12, but overheating was a major problem with GoPro 11
@@WorldwideCyclery I think you might find it a pretty solid camera. I do need to figure out a microphone solution though. I wonder if I can use the DJI mic you have on it. Going to research that.
GoPro - reason being, when you are in some ecosystem for years, you get used to things the way they are. Selling out 3 cameras and switching to other manufacturer would have to be for some major pros. Depending on the use cases, for now - there are not enough
Totally fair!! And I know what you mean. Speaking of ecosystem, the GoPro subscription is actually pretty useful and well priced if you’re able to take advantage of its benefits.
Nice! Thanks for all the info! Do you think you'll do a comparison with the Insta360 in the future? Loving the podcast, it gets me through my workdays.

Yes, both are totally waterproof. The DJI I believe goes slightly deeper underwater before needing the scuba dive housing. But both are totally waterproof and can go free diving/snorkeling without any case.
Which action cam do you use?
Hero 8. Still works great and not as big as some
Bought an OSMO 4 a few months ago and still absolutely love it.
I have both of these cameras, Action 4 on 4k looks better than Gopro on 5.3k. Action 4 is easier to use, and better experience. The batteries are not the same. Action 4 last a lot longer than Gopro. It's not even close.
Those mics absolutely did NOT sound the same in that clip. The DJI sounded much clearer...

One topic you didn't cover is water resistance. How do they stack up for use on the slopes or for kayaking. One camera for all purposes is important.

The magnetic mounts are a game changer!
I bought DJI OA 4 last week. I love it, the quality and how nice it is, is insane.
Thanks for this comparison. Been considering getting one again for multiple sports usage.

To my ear the dji ozmo audio was a little brighter.
Great video. I've been looking at the Osmo 4. I have been using an older Hero 7 but I can't stand it.
After watching your video I think I'm going for the Osmo 4.
Glad I could help! You will be absolutely stoked with either of these cameras coming from a Hero7. 🍻
I'm just wondering about the cycling glasses Jeff was wearing. They looked clutch.
Those are Ombraz. They are my all time favorites.
The DJI appeared to have a bit more dynamic range in the color. Not sure I trust the magnetic lock for surfing
The magnet is there to center the camera onto the hooks. It's actually hooked in.
Great video.
Small question.
I need action camera only for going to the beach and waterpark slides with my children.
Which one should I buy?

Hhmm nice. I have some ND filters, need to try them out at some point.
@@WorldwideCyclery literally the footage looks average with out. Also I found the boost modes on the GoPro set to the middle settings best 😀
DJI is leading in action camera tech
I think the audio on the go pro sounds a little muffled
Hi great informative video, the same side/side at 9:25 were both cameras 4K 30FPS?

Very true!
I've really been enjoying the Insta360 Ace Pro with the GPS remote. It's been a solid camera.
Nice. Yeah I need to try that one as well. Looks rad.
@@WorldwideCyclery I think you might find it a pretty solid camera. I do need to figure out a microphone solution though. I wonder if I can use the DJI mic you have on it. Going to research that.
You were trying hard not to say the final score by category was DJI 10, GoPro 0.
GoPro - reason being, when you are in some ecosystem for years, you get used to things the way they are. Selling out 3 cameras and switching to other manufacturer would have to be for some major pros. Depending on the use cases, for now - there are not enough

Can’t wait to tell my mom that DJI is still better than the GoPro!
I don’t want more features. I just want them smaller, lighter and wider view
Totally! All these action cams just need to get smaller and lighter at this point.
What camera do you use for your studio/counter shots?
Sony A7C with a 50mm lens. We also use it on a gimble for outdoor riding shots often too. Great camera but nothing special.
What about the Insta360 x4?
Valid point! I haven’t had a chance to use that camera yet. But I’m hoping to do so later in the year once GoPro and DJI release their new versions.
Action 4
Nice! Thanks for all the info! Do you think you'll do a comparison with the Insta360 in the future? Loving the podcast, it gets me through my workdays.

dude said least but not last and i lol'ed
Glad somebody noticed 😅
Are they both waterproof?
Yes, both are totally waterproof. The DJI I believe goes slightly deeper underwater before needing the scuba dive housing. But both are totally waterproof and can go free diving/snorkeling without any case.
I'd get DJI or insta360
All i want its see go pro go down !!!
LET GO DJI !!!!
Insta360 is all over Redbull Hardline this year. Many pros put down their GoPro and picked up the Insta360 AcePro. Bet Insta360 paid them.
Yeah I saw that too. I need to try one of those as well as they do seem pretty good.
Is the dji app free I believe u have to pay for the go pro one???
Insta 360 X4! The GOAT of action cams!
Go-pro still better than my osmo sorry go-pro hater's.
I would not want a magnetic mount because I would 100 percent lose the camera.
